Noticed in the Tassie game thread there's a couple of Lions supporters down there. I'm going to be down there with my gf this weekend for her birthday and was wondering what kinds of sights and scenes are recommended by the locals? We're landing in Launceston and driving down to Hobart before spending a couple of nights there, so pretty much anywhere on the eastern side or semi-close to Hobart is fair game.

As soon as you're in your car in Launceston at the airport: lock the doors, enjoy the beautiful view in and around Launceston and don't get out or wind down your windows. Least of all, do not talk to the locals until you get out of the city limits.

For some strange reason, God created this beautiful Tamar valley and decided to fill it up with arrogant ********s!

Hobart is the go. Not only beautiful as well, but lovely people, my favourite in Australia (I'm not Tasmanian folks) and plenty of great sites and tucker, least of all pubs.

BTW I do love the Boags beer from Launy and Jailhouse Grill there is my favourite steak place in Aus.

Think your getting Launceston and Hobart confused.

Launceston is very picturesque, but there isn't a whole lot to do and see. The Cataract Gorge is the main attraction in the north of the state, beautiful scenery. Notable pubs and clubs include: Llloyds, Lonnies, Irish Murphy's, The James and the Commerical.

Hobart is a lovely place, I currently live there for University. However the people in general certainly are not friendly. Make sure you have a look at Salamanca and the docks. Notable pubs and clubs include: Curly's, Isobar, The Telegraph, Syrup, The Vic Tav, Custom's House and again Irish Murphy's.

Hope that give's you a little bit to go on, enjoy your stay.

That's not in Launy, that's at Beauty Point, approx about half an hour north (not far for us mainlanders but may as well be in another state for Tasmanians :p).

Probably not exactly worth a visit. I took my wife there and believe it or not, she didn't know sea horses existed until she saw this place. They have millions of them in incubation and at different stages of their life span.

They say they export to china for studies.....right!

I'm from Hobart, and I don't know what Oneeyedpie is on about. People are generally very very lovely in BOTH places. Watch out, often protests whenever there's a log truck that comes travelling along Macquarie Street, particularly people intelligent enough to tie themselves to the undercarriage of the log trucks

I agree, must see Salamanca, particularly on Saturday as that's when the markets are on, The Nut in stanley, Tahune Air Walk, many a place to see and things to do. Also the Cascade Brewery tour. Incredibly interesting to see how it's all done, well, was for me anyway! Wonderful down here, just wonderful!

I'll try and give my top 10 favourite things to do (now I have never visited Cradle Mountain folks so take that as a given okay?). You will note I very much rate Tassie for it's food!

10 Driving from Burnie to Ulverstone (or vice versa) and that beuatiful stretch of road on the coast
9 A Boag's premium at St Helens enjoying the 'melbournesque' weather
8 Raw salmon from any of the fishmongers on the jetty - fresh as!
7 King Island blue Eye Fillet at Jailhouse Grill (Launceston)
6 Curried Scallop pies anywhere in the state
5 Seeing the lions play at Launy
4 The Seafood Chowder at Wellers Inn, Burnie with my favourite view
3 Doyles or any of the other seafood places at the Hobart docks
2 Opening fresh oysters anywhere in the state
1 Going home (if I've been away from family)

Go to MT Wellington :thumbsu:, the air walk, port arthur ghost tours, richmond ghost tour/oldest bridge in australia or something is there 2, the only good place in launie is the gorge, on your way 2 hobart go to frecinet national park, and walk ar least to wineglass bay (my fav camping place). Lots pubs and clubs, places to eat in the city, salamanca on saturday is a must do. Just enjoy your time in the best ecological state in Australia!!!

I think the things we've got on our list so far:
- Tahune Air Walk
- Port Arthur Ghost Tour
- Hastings Caves
- Cascade Brewery tour (she loves going on brewery tours but doesn't drink beer... not that I'm complaining, it means I get double on all free samples)
- a couple of historic houses somewhere between Launceston and Hobart (her call, not mine)

Thanks for all the suggestions (I'm not saying stop!), I'll definitely try to check out some of this stuff.

I took my wife to Launy for one of my many business trips there and the bouncers wanted to pick a fight with us BEFORE we even got into the bar!

Seems like they didn't like the look of 'out-of-towners' and decided to have a go. Nothing out of the ordinary if I was on the Gold Coast for Schoolies week I suppose, but friendly Tasmania? BTW we're both well in our 30's by this stage and very sober that night as she'd just got off a flight and this was here first introduction to Tasmania.
