What are people's thoughts on these issues? I think the arrangement is fantastic, personally. It brings good money into the club, in terms of the sponsorship dollars, extra memberships, merch sales etc etc. I have been down 3 times and had an absolute ball every time. We have spent tourist dollars in the tassie economy, and we very much intend to go back.

Plus, as an 11 game Melbourne member for 13 years, I feel I lose nothing, with the replacement games we get.

If north happen to get re-located to Hobart, do we get kicked out of Launie? If tassie eventually gets it's own team, do we get kicked out? I hear the tassie government is keen to take us on again, and why wouldn't they be?

And if north re-locate and we get booted, will that un-dilute the Melbourne sports sponsorship market? We're not a club that will starve for sponsorship, that's for certain. But the tassie deal is excellent. For both parties.

I'm an MCC member with the MCC Hawk membership (basically gets me into all the non-MCG home ames) so replacement games don't mean much to me. So for selfish reasons it would mean I get to attend more live games for the same financial out lay if the Tassie deal ended.

That said the only reason I haven't gone to a Tassie game (or any of our interstate games) before is because I've been a poor uni student. As of next year I'm starting full time employment and I'm hoping the extra income will allow me to get down there at least once. At which point I might want to see the partnership continue. It's a good source of income, supporters and our record down there speaks for itself even if it is against mostly poor sides.

It's been a master stroke move by the club and a great initiative to keep the Hawks at the forefront as a super power club.

I think it's been a good move for both club and sponsor. We've looked after Tassie, and unlike others that have been down there, we don't pay it lip service, and Tassie has been very good for us.

I'd love to get down there for a game, as the people I do know who have been there say it's a great weekend.

Don't mind it but the AFL wants one team playing 8 games not 2 teams playing for games.
I would rather play no games down there than play 8 games down there that's for sure

Yep, so what happens if that happens?

Well its hard to say. I dont think they can actually force us out but they can certainly make life difficult for us, so it a matter of whether its worth it to have to fight city hall for the whole time we're down there or do we use it as leverage to get a greta deal to leave.

If the AFL are desperate to have 1 team there and North are happy to play 7-8 games across Launie and Hobart then I would be willing to leave if they give us this.

1. $7.5million cash

2. A guaranteed home game against North in Launie and a guaranteed away game in Launie/Hobart against North. Leaving us with 2 games in Tas and North can still have their 7 or 8.

3. The AFL buys Etihad and gives a sweet clean stadium deal to play low drawing interstate sides there only, with all other games at the G.

That cash would need to be equalisation-tax-free otherwise they'll just take a big chunk back and some of it will go to North.

The value of the replacement games lessened greatly this year with the classification of games at the G. I think the Richmond game was the only one not to be an A or A+, which meant dipping into the pocket for the other games (in what used to be a case of walk up and scan your membership).

As good as the Tassie deal has been, I wouldn't be dismayed if we went back to playing 11 home games in Melbourne. Of course, I'd expect the membership cost to jump. :(

And you ended up paying slightly more than a non member if i recall

The ability to scan your membership card and sit in GA was still there, but the number of available GA seats was drastically reduced. Even for the Tigers game only the back dozen rows in the Southern Stand were GA.

Hawthorn absolutely must keep the Tassie deal going as long as possible. There is no way we are going to be gifted an 11 game MCG deal, and once we lose our Launceston leverage, we will be beaten like a redhaded stepchild by a vengeful AFL.

Imagine having the temerity to take games where people actually like football. In spite of the shite draw our fans cop yearly, the Tassie deal continues to work for all parties, in spite of the league trying to insert their dirty whore, North, who have failed to have any traction whatsoever in Sydney, Gold Coast, Ballarat and Canberra.

Hawthorn and the game itself are stronger as long as we remain steadfast. Being shoehorned into crappy etihad fixtures while the league milks the so called 'big four' at our expense is no option at all.

North will end up there so we should do an exit deal ASAP while we still have leverage.
I would take 8 MCG home games and an away game in Tas v North.
Everything will change once AFL owns Etihad.

Tassie has been great for the Hawks.

Hawks have been great for Tassie.

People need to understand the impact on young kids the Hawks have had here in Tas, we will reap the reward for generations once these kids become adults.

This !!!

The extra bonus is that a lot of Tassie kids grow up and move to Melbourne for Uni or work

We are long term importing Hawks fans to Me

Think the Tassie deal has been good for Hawthorn, but it is clearly coming to an end. Our combination of 4 games is pretty much the same every year (brisbane, shit victorian side, 2 low drawing interstate sides). Doesn't really inspire me to spend my hard earned for a trip there.

Compare this to north who are playing Richmond and St Kilda out of their 3 games, two sides that have traditionally been very popular in Tassie. It is clear what the AFL's end game is.

On a selfish note, I'd be happy with more games back in Melbourne. I just hope we get a good deal to leave.

What are you basing that on?

Just because the Tassie government wants us to play 'powerhouse' clubs there, doesn't mean we are going to.

Tasmania is pushing for one Melbourne-based AFL club to commit to a ''semi-relocation'' by playing eight games annually in the state, which also hopes to one day have its own team.

Clearly not going to be us

An AFL-backed report into the game's future in Tasmania has questioned Hawthorn's commitment to developing the code down south and concluded that the club has failed to capture ''the hearts and minds'' of the heartland state.

AFL is clearly itching for us to get out, and if you can remember the AFL being unhappy when we extended our Tassie deal, which meant North couldn't play 7 games or whatever it was down there.

A claim that was subsequently 'rubbished' by the club AND Premier of the state:

Since we agreed to play 4 games in Tasmania in 2007 we haven't played the following clubs in Tasmania:

Collingwood - 71,154 average across 14 home / away games at the MCG
Carlton - 61,495 average across 3 home / away games at the MCG
Essendon - 60,672 average across 6 home / away games at the MCG
Richmond - 47,112 average across 10 home / away games at the MCG
Melbourne - 41,053 average across 12 home / away games at the MCG

In that time we've only played the following clubs in Tasmania once:

Geelong (2007) - 72,958 average across 13 home / away games at the MCG
Sydney (2012) - 50,981 average across 6 home / away games at the MCG
St Kilda (2009) - 38,434 average across 4 home / away games at the MCG

I cant see Hawthorn hosting Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton or Sydney in Tasmania for many years but Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda???

Thats a positive for us, but there are 4 parties involved here. All with their own agenda.

AFL - League operations, all clubs sustainable.
Tasmanian Government - Tourism, public vote & elections.
Hawthorn FC - Financial gain, broaden our supporter base.
North Melb FC - Same as above, but it reeks of cash grabbing desperation.

In my opinion, the AFL and North have overstepped the mark and risk undoing all the hard work we have put into making Tasmania a success. It was just all to easy for North to sneak into Hobart, with a stadium already AFL standard and the powers that be in government all residing in the south. If the AFL had some foresight they should use our model for Ballarat and Bendigo for North and Footscray. Tasmania should be ours alone. Its been mentioned before in this thread, but we are yet to see the full benefit from our relationship with Tasmania in terms of supporters becoming members. That process can take 20 years or more. To loose it now would be a massive blow, but not the end of the world. I'll be filthy with North and AFL if we do.

just my 2c

Hawks want it bad, Tassie wants it bad, AFL doesn't want it, what is North's actual official position on the Hawks playing out of Launy? Do they actually have one? Do they want us out? They can go jump, if so. Bloody Jonny come latelies, upstarts, they've been deeply confused about having a 2nd home for years and years. For 5 minutes they were going to western Sydney, then it was Canberra, then they had the opportunity to move to the GC and become a powerhouse, which they knocked back, then it was Ballarat, now apparently they've settled on a market where we've been for a decade and a half. Weak, aimless minnow nothing club.
