If I buy a small car just to run to and from the job site can i claim 100% service costs and tyres?
The job type shoildnt matter surely??

you are unlikely to be questioned but there are better methods. you are unlikely to use your car 100% for work purposes.

the nature of the job does matter as going to and from work, including job sites is not deductible, unless you are a cricket player or other jobs.

look at the options but a kilometre method is so much easier and cleaner.

You cannot claim mileage to and from work. Only mileage incurred in the course of your employment whilst at work - eg attending work related meetings, picking up the mail etc.

So as a sub contractor the mrs is being told by who she works for that she can claim the fuel, servicing etc
She also drives onto the site and drives from area to area on the site to do work over a period of 5 hrs as its a big site
She has an ABN

And if I bought a third car specifically for her to drive to work then yeah, she would use it 100% for work and nothing else

I would strongly recommend that she consult a registered tax agent rather than rely on the person she sub contracts to.

The guy she works for is right. It's all fairly straightforward:

https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/...aim/Vehicle-and-travel-expenses/Car-expenses/

Get a registered Tax Agent to submit your tax. H&R Block are cheap as, they'll maximise your return and they'll clear up any confusion. Fairly certain in the event you're audited or the ATO contacts you for more info they go through them as well which is great.

FWIW I'm self-employed and claim everything.

I would avoid H&R Block like the plague.

How come?

As I said: they're cheap as, and as with everything in life you get what you pay for.

Being self-employed (no employees of my own) my tax isn't too complicated so H & R Block have been great. If I was making heaps of money, had my own employees, investment properties etc. I'd probably be in a position to afford something better.
