That would of been my reaction if i wasn't sort of mugged

A few years ago in Melbourne I met a driver who reckons he got a $2k fare to take these businessmen from Melbourne to Sydney when Ansett went **** up. They had to be at a meeting the next day, so he drove through the night. They paid for his meals, coffee etc. and a hotel room he could sleep in that day before he drove back to Melbourn.

Phone was 5% last night so hailed a taxi instead of using Uber. $19.90 for Little Bourke St to Brunswick. ****ing driver wouldn't accept my $20 note because of a tear  Paying by card still has a surcharge, so over $20  Never again. Zero sympathy for these licence holders who had their revenue destroyed by Uber. Can't have been too hurt anyway if there's taxis still around.

The taxi drivers I've come across are the scum of the earth. Last weekend I prepaid $75 on card to take me home early on Sunday morning, I was a little drunk and tired so I fell asleep during the ride. He woke me at my destination and tried to claim I hadn't paid a cent. Shuffled through his receipts (obviously had removed it) and despite me physically showing him my bank statement with the amount taken out, still was trying to make me pay an absurd amount.

Bloke tried to pull a shifty. I've had numerous stories similar. Most are absolute rip offs, no sympathy for them.

$31 for a maxi from Punt Rd to Flinders St Station last year, will never forget it.

#uberftw
The surcharge increase for Uber is getting ridiculous though. Did a trip from St Kilda to Camberwell that cost me $56 and almost did one from CBD to Taylor's Lakes that would have cost $100.

Yup, not often that I use a taxi but I refuse to use Uber because of their surge pricing. Its a disgusting act no matter how "up front" they are about it.

Had a cabbie pick me up in St.Kilda a few years ago, was heading to the MCG, he didn't know what that was or where it was... C'mon man.

Generally pretty good experiences, had the odd one refuse to take me from Collingwood to Richmond on a night out but meh.

As for Uber, I love it but yeh Surge pricing is getting out of hand. Used uber in Maui and theres one uber for the whole place so its always surging and in Sydney I don't think ive had a trip yet that wasn't surge fares.

Only downloaded the uber app about 2 weeks ago and have used a few times. Such a better service than taxis.

I like the Asian taxi drivers, always good to chat cricket with, I had a Pakistani taxi driver who sat out the front of my house one day talking with me about Pakistani politics for fifteen minutes. Best still are the old wog ones who put the world to rights during a fifteen minute cab ride.
Plus Adelaide is so small it's bloody hard to get lost, so there is never that frustration.

It's a very UK thing to call Indian/Pakistani people Asian. Obviously they are from the continent of Asia but most Aussies who say Asian generally mean SE Asian or East Asian and will distinguish South Asians as 'Indian' even if they aren't.

Anyway, agree RE: subcontinent taxi drivers. It probably makes someone somewhere cry 'that's racist' but if I see my taxi driver has a turban I immediately think 'I bet this bloke likes cricket'. Have yet to meet one that doesn't.

Zero sympathy for these licence holders who had their revenue destroyed by Uber. Can't have been too hurt anyway if there's taxis still around.

I have sympathy though for the ones who spent $100,000s on a license, and which the govt is offering to buy back since uber legalisation at less than half the cost

that's a bit rough

ordered a taxi once (after a few drinks) on a rainy night so you can imagine its cold, dark and this bloke is waiting for me......He see's me come up the road with my hoody on......"you order taxi" yea man yea that was me......"what your name" I tell him my name walk around the front of the car, My hand just touched the handle and the bastard drives off.......Just left me in the rain.
Haha any video?

Uber still outweighs the cab by far.

Online payment is so much easier for all parties. Annoying thing is when they cancel the fare after you have requested and waited 5 minutes.

With the surge charging, you want to just wait if its too high. Wandered round the streets the other week waiting for the price to go down and 10 minutes later cashed in on the fare.

Uber isn't perfect - had drivers cancel on me or dick around sidestreets on their way to pick me up - but the autopayment system and both parties recording the other's identity definitely encourages a civility.

Can remember a story of where a local kid fell asleep in a taxi on the way back from a night out and woke up to the bill being twice what it should have as the guy presumably drove around in circles.

I'm sure they're similar stories with uber but still.

13CABS were still using their oh so hilarious pisstake of Eminem's "Without Me", released in 2002, for their call waiting in 2010-11. Hip and on the ball.
