Hi my name is Lily...

I go for Collingwood *ducks for cover* because I love how their mouthguards make their teeth match those of their supporters :). No seriously, I really do like Collingwood.

I also like rock n roll and I have a soft spot for handlebars, so my taste probably isn't the best, or is it?

Anyway, I joined this site not because I am a roaring AFL lover, but because it is part of my job to understand AFL (and other sports) as much as I can - and reading non stop from different websites is doing my head in. I need some interactive education!

I understand the basics, such as goals, behinds, the teams, the 50, marks...But that's pretty much it.

Today, I have been reading this site http://www.swoopercoach.com.au/about/aussie-rules/ which I am putting here for my own reference.

I want to learn more about the history of the different clubs, great moments in AFL history, key players, pronunciation of some of the stranger names.

Right now I am really interested in how positions on the ladder, finals, semi finals and anything else related to the end of the season work. I know this is vague, but it's hard to know how to ask the right questions if you don't know enough about the topic.

I'd also like to know more about how/if standing in the comp affects where games will be played.

If anyone can help that would be great.

Hi Lily. I'm a Richmond supporter so can't really tell you how the finals work because, ah well...anyhoo good luck and if you need help with the rules go to the Umpires board. If you're really keen I suggest you volunteer as a goal umpire to give you first hand experience of this great game.

Thanks for the advice EasternTiger....goal umpire? Wow that WOULD be interesting...I am a fairly weak girly girl so don't know if I would have the nerve, especially where I live. But maybe. Will think about it.

I'll only be kind since you're a pies chick :p

Search through the Main Board. There are plenty threads about Great Grand Finals Moments, Best Players of the decade etc etc. And if you don't see any threads about a specific question you may have, start your own.

Yeh not sure what you're getting at. Try reading this for a start? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_finals_system

What';s your job?

Thanks Lebneni :)

Great advice, am about to check out the main board and the link you provided. I found a good section on the AFL site (in the tickets section actually) that shows the upcoming finals format.

In regards to this: "I'd also like to know more about how/if standing in the comp affects where games will be played"

I was curious about something I heard a couple of weeks ago in relation to a Lions game, something like if they won their upcoming game then for the game after that they would then get a home game, if they lost they would be away. But I guess that was just because it depended on who they would be versing after that? I don't know.

I have heard of the "home and away" round for NRL and thought it may apply to AFL too?

I work for a bookmaking/odds setting company.

Go Pies!
