For a start I'm talking about balance and structure when applied to game plan and the personnel we have to implement, both established players and recruits likely to be in the mix in the immediate future.

To go forward fist we need to go back and with hindsight examine what was, what has been altered already before we can speculate on what is to come.

No finger pointing or personalities involved here please, we all know the past issues and personalities that drove them I think it's now time to look forward.

So unlike Knighta and other sharp footy brains I'm just a rough nut footy barracker and lover of the almighty Pies and my aim here is to just start the ball rolling and see if the BF collective think can give us all a blueprint for the future :)

Dateline GF evening 2010 and Collingwood supporters everywhere are celebrating sweet, sweet success. The banal tripe usually served up by the footy media is replaced by sensationalist tripe rhapsodising about 'The Press' and all things Collingwood.

We are all aware of what happened from that point onward so please lets not rehash back and forth. As Pies supporters we need to move forward together and forget the past. The last 3 years has seen a huge change in players, coaching and support personnel and game plan. We have recruited well with an eye to the future and Buckley's preferred game plan is becoming clearer simply by the focus of our recruits.

For me the key changes in last years player lists has been and will continue to be a changing of the gaurd - an effort to ensure a smooth transition of key personnel to sustain a finals competitive side whilst doing a rolling rebuild.

First and most dramatic was the fall from grace of big Darren, given that he could barely get off the ground anymore it was no real shock that a fully fit and aggressive young ruck took over the mantle of first ruck. We made a play for young Adams this off season and landed our fish, it seems to me he was recruited to replace Luke Ball and with displayed form and attributes so far seems a reasonably good chance of doing so. That retains our grunt at the coalface.

The other big factor in the second half of the season was the movement of Ben Reid to the forward line and the strong positive effect that had up there. Will a fully fit Keefe fill the breach down back? I'm inclined to think so, doubtless he will never attain Ben's surgical disposal but with his height and manaueverablity can make his own impression.

IMHO those are the knowns and the rest is speculation, but what fascinating stuff with increased height and grunt being drafted in, ball users like Broomy and the sheer electrifying pace of people like Swampy are going to provide rivetting viewing and much pleasureable speculation.

I like a good discussion but I will not be forgetting 2010 until I am well in the ground.;)

On a serious note, I think we can expect to see players like Keeffe, Seedsman and Williams really nail down their respective roles and positions this year. They have all showed extreme promise in the last season or two and should look to make themselves regular contributors for years to come.

The midfield will be an interesting space to watch as we have some excellent older players in Ball and Swan that the coaching staff will be looking to replace in the next few seasons. The amount of game time given to the young up and coming recruits in this area will be interesting as it may well impact negatively while players find their feet. How much do we sacrifice this season for future seasons?

The back line will also be interesting to watch. We need to find a run and carry player now that Heater is gone and we will also be looking to develop someone for Maxwell's role over the last few years. My money is on Seedsman to develop into the: run from defence go to guy. He has a damaging peg and quite a bit of toe so I think he'll help us rebound very quickly of the halfback line. Keeffe and Brown in my opinion have the potential to be a good tall partnership down there if Reid is moved forward permanently. Keeffe is good one on one, takes a good grab and has reasonable disposal, although not as damaging as someone like Reid or Seedsman over distance.

The forward is the area where we most need to improve in my opinion. We were way too telegraphed last season and had poor delivery on top of that as well. Cloke is not Jesus and we cannot keep kicking it to him and expecting him to beat 3 opponents. And if we are to persist with this madness, then have crumbers at his feet to make the most of it. I like having Reid as a swingman from defence to the forward line when needed, however, I sense he may start as a permanent forward if the club thinks Keeffe and Brown can cover the talls down back. Having him forward definitely helped stretch opposition defenses. Players like Elliott, Fasolo and Karnezis can add something in my opinion as a smaller marking option to help put pressure on opposition defenders. Considering we have a wide range of marking forwards, both talls in Cloke and Reid (any maybe White), plus smalls in Fasolo and Elliot etc... We should strive to make contested marking a feature of our forward structure. Most clubs will struggle to mark up on that many marking forwards in my opinion. Jesse White will be another interesting cog, I think he can be extremely athletic and allow Cloke to be more stay at home. I imagine we'll be seeing White play up the ground a fair bit more and allowing Reid and Cloke to own the fifty.

I'm 50/50 on Cloke staying at home, he is so athletic for a big contested marking bloke. Perhaps we could work out a partnership of Reid the pivotal with Cloke roaming the half forward / high wing and White changing on and off the ball to high half forward. This would provide a couple of mobile tall forwards with Reid a less mobile target and the smaller marking forwards in Elliott and Faz further stretching the opposition defense. The only missing piece of that highly offensive forward line is crumbing capability.

As for the mids I'm hoping Adams can fill the coal face role, he seems to have the creds but only time and experience will tell. Perhaps a rotation of medium smalls through the half back line and midfield can create enough pressure to do a good job on giving us enough freedom to mount attacks with more precision.

The backs are very interesting this coming season with Brown trimming down in an attempt to find a bit of accelleration (hoping losing bulk doesn't affect his ability to muscle it out with the heavy troops). I beleive Keefe has the tools to do the job in the backline and an injury free run could make believers out of many doubters. We need to find a player capable of kicking out with consistancy at least and that run and carry needs to improve over last year.

All in all its going to be an interesting season.

The big question is how many talls are we going to play. We have real flexibility in our side, but it may take some time to find the right mix.

Option 1:

Cloke + Reid + White - This option seems like Plan A, and makes sense as White would make-shift as the backup ruck. At 197cm and with real athleticism, he is a genuine ruck option. Cloke and Reid have already shown they work well together. Our backline is then reliant on Brown, Keefe..with Maxwell, Goldsack and Toovey playing as utilities. Then there is

Option 2:

Cloke + White + Lynch - This is a very tall and immobile forward line, but allows Reid into defence. I love the look of the backline with Brown and Keefe playing key posts, then Reid playing as the floating 3rd man up. He is such a good reader of the play, has a lethal left foot and backs into packs. Whtie and Lynch are both ruck options and can assist Grundy...and we'd have the option of subbing one off (or even subbing Grundy) and bringing in more foot speed whilst still having 2 genuine ruckmen.

Option 3

Cloke + White + Goldsack/Marsh/Karnezis - This is the more versatile option, with 2 key talls and a third mid-sized type who can play tall and also add a bit more defensive pressure. (Goldsack in particular has been successful in this role in the past. Again we have a backup ruck in White, and we also can utilise Reid as the 3rd key defender. The issue with this is that Cloke is exposed when White moves into the ruck.

Option 4

Cloke + Reid/White/Lynch + Witts

This option gives us 2 genuine ruckmen as opposed to 1 ruck and 1 makeshift. It also gives a position to Witts who I believe needs to keep getting exposed. He is a one off sort of player who can become just about anything. He has Aaron Sandilands height and size, yet he is more agile. I also think he is better than Sandilands at the same age. However, Sandilands developed into a real marking force and developed footy smarts. Witts doesn't have them yet. If we elect to keep the Cloke + Reid setup, then White and Lynch don't have a spot if Witts gets a game. Otherwise we play Cloke + White and send Reid into defence. Again, this is a veyr top heavy team with 3 big talls up either end.

Option 5

Cloke + White + 4 aggressive tackling smalls - Guys like Kennedy, Blair, Elliott and Kyle Martin give us real aggression and flare up forward. If Grundy can hold 90% of the ruck, then White and Cloke get to spend more time together up forward and let the smalls run havoc at their feet. We can also utilise Reid down back, and he can swing forward when WHite goes into the ruck with Goldsack or Toovey filling in his role.

Conclusion

Ultimately it is horses for courses, but there also needs to be experimentation. I also wouldn't mind us trying a ruck combination of White + Lynch and playing a super versatile team. White is 197cm and had good ruck figures at NEAFL level.

I think Plan A is option 1. Then we just swing Reid between roles where needed. But this will be balanced between the need to have forward pressure, and sometimes having 4 aggressive smalls up forward at the feet of Cloke + White might be preferable.

I would flip between option 1 and 5. But the idea of a Witts/Grundy future combination is worth testing as well. Lynch is in his 30's so I think we need to look past him if there are younger players in form.

As you say flexibility is our key strength now and it is a valuable assett lets hope it doesn't lead to a dilution of an overall game plan and remains built in options for varying situations.

Our Rucks will be the biggest talking point in 2014 again IMO. If one of Grundy or Witts is to get injured we are catagorely stuffed for the season.
Our talls in defence another problematic area. We lack an A grade tall defender and A grade small.

Keen to see how Witts has gone in the offseason.
Realistically I think we would have to play him and Grundy, with one of them resting up front, and Reid down back.

I'm less concerned. We have 3 rucks like most teams do. Then we have Keefe over 200cm. Then there is White and Lynch. I'd hvae no problem going in with Lynch and White against certain opponents. There's agility there.

WItts needs to get thrown in sooner or later, so if Grundy goes down it will be his chance. Hudson is more than capable of holding up for 2 or 3 weeks at a time.

I think this might happen this year,

Marley Williams to play more midfield if he has the tank, Sinclair to take small forwards. Reid, Keefe and brown on talls. Reid is our best backman by a mile. I think Maxwell will struggle to maintain spot, if he dosent we will not finish top 4. Sidebottom played his best football last year running out from the backline, Other 1 spots can be filled by a number of players, its who puts their hand up out of Seedsman, Oxley, Young, Ramsay, etc

Dane Swan to play more in forward line, I think we can cover him now with plenty of options, it will extend his career and make him more hungry when he is in the middle. I am hoping Witts will be come on next year and hold his spot, I think he will be a better forward than ruck, which will be fine because Grundy will be a better ruck than forward. Lynch will struggle to get a game, failed as a forward but did play well in the ruck complete opposite to Dawes who failed in the ruck but was good as a forward, lets hope witts can do both. I am not holding my breath on White.

There looks like there is going to be a lot of pressure for spots which should make this an exciting season, should be a fun year

Cloke/Reid/White are likely the key forward group with Lynch the first depth option.

Expect improvement from that front half as a whole with the the key forward group more competitive than in recent times and our smalls gaining experience and likely improved.

Keeffe/Williams/Seedsman I feel are already established players and among our most reliable from week to week already so you can back them in with confidence.

The positive this offseason while younger and less experienced is the improvement in team chemistry. We've got less "problem guys" with Jolly/Thomas/Shaw all gone now along with the rat pack other than Swan so as a unit the professionalism as Buckley will demand I expect will be exceptionally high from the group.

Despite all this I feel it's going to be a relative challenge to make the top 8. The other middle of the table clubs are on the swift improve. The Western Bulldogs have an incredible midfield and their young core coming through are excellent and not yet give the recognition they deserve. North Melbourne are a top 4 side with Dal Santo and McDonald and will start winning the close games this year. Essendon will be a top 8 side and close to top 4. Gold Coast are on the swift improve and with the additions of Jack Martin, Kade Kolodjashnij and the natural improvement of their list and they should be another top 8 side going by their strong play from late last year. Adelaide should also rebound with Taylor Walker coming back this year and West Coast more competitive with Naitanui likely available for the full season.
So it's not such an easy year, particularly when in the immediate you lose more than you gain with Shaw particularly a loss that will be felt as consistently our best backman these past eight seasons.
