I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how this bloke is going. I keep seeing him get in the best players for the VFL side and he was named as an emergency for the Essendon game. Is he any chance at all in the near future of cracking the senior lineup or is his only shot if injuries happen?

Bingo.

He's a certainity to be delisted come season's end.

And it's a shame because he has the pace and aerobic capacity to be a good midfielder in the AFL. Unfortunately, you have to be able to kick the footy, and this is something he hasn't improved in the 4-5 years he's been on the list.

I don't understand any malice shown towards Tenace. To my eye he really was a victim of timing. Had he arrived a few years earlier he would have made it.

For starters, he came on the scene at the exact time that we assembled the best group of 5-7 midfielders the club has ever had in its history. In addition, and probably more tellingly, he also arrived (or was in his prime) when there was a subtle shift in AFL (probably led by Geelong) that accentuated decision making and precise disposal over pace and ball winning ability.

I really think he is a pretty good footballer trapped in a changed game that not did suit his talents. Obviously all of the above transpired to make him dispensable.

Comparisons with the far inferior David Clarke and David Spriggs are unfair.

He's a solid player with a good attiude and excellent workrate and he obviously is extremely fast, I thought he was going to be a gun but he's had plenty of chances and with the style of game we play his disposal is just too big a liability IMO. I think he might make it a clearance midfielder rather than half back but never gonna happen at geelong.

I think he'll get picked up by another club and have a career similar to Tim Callan where he might get 15 games a year but probably ultimately end up a career depth player.

Not sure he is any better than David Clarke was. People forget he played around 100 afl games and was a very promising prospect early on.

bulletproof, I think most genuine supporters would say that he is a good player; but, as you stated up against some of our best midfielders that not only Geelong has had, but in the league also. I'd definitely agree there.

Why he is probably maligned so much with the posters above is that he hasn't changed his game. There has been very little improvement in his kicking efficiency. So it isn't that the game has changed, it's that he hasn't.

On this though, we generally get our best glimpse of him during preseason, where errors are constant between all players.

If he is out of contract this year, I'd suspect the the Gold Coast would be calling. He's young enough to be picked up by them, and I believe he has the skills to give pace and athletic ability to the side in the interim.

His one massive positive is his pace. Pace that I can't say I've ever seen him use. His two major downfalls are atrocious disposal and and a woeful football brain. No matter the timing, he wouldn't have made it.

but when he has used his pace on the odd occasion he's been knackered afterwards and usually goes to the bench. His kicking is woeful and he doesn't kick more than 20-25m most times.

Was it 4 years ago that Bomber declared Tenace an "untouchable" Cat, along with Bartel.

He may well go down as one of the biggest dissappointments at Geelong.

Sadly, Tenace will attract SFA at the trade table - we should have traded him 3 years ago.

I dont have any malice for Tenace, I just think he is a useless player. He is only around still purely because of reputation and promise. He has been given numerous chances from the Cats to play at a Senior level and despite consistently performing well in the VFL, displays in those chances why he isnt cut out to be a good player.

I think it was when Essendon offered us their first round pick for him '04 or '05.

Do'h.
If you believe the grapevine, Collingwood offered (IIRC) pick 7 after his debut season.

After one year it was unlikely that Geelong was going to part with him, especially since he showed something in his freshman year.

But with hindsight...

Would it have been at the end of 04 when we traded 'One Trick' Moloney to get Ottens ?
yes it was. would still rather have kept moloney. comparisons with spriggs are reasonable, but tenace is better. clarke however was hot early on, even got top 3 in b&f one year, something went horribly wrong for clarke, total loss of confidence, whereas spriggs and tenace have never improved their disposal, spriggs in particular a shocker, tenace just looks a little unlucky as far as being nqr for our team.

Not so sure-- ess picked kepler bradley one ahead of tenace. lot of ess supporters wanted tenace. now both appear to be disappointments, bradley at least still playing senior footy at freo. Demons wanted bartel or tenace or moloney and got moloney, while scott thompson went back home to crows and we got ottens. Big footy people tell me we kept tenace 09 instead of say davenport, purely for $ reasons, unfinished contract?? Pretty sure bomber is a tenace fan anyway.

Dead right.

Let us never speak of the year we drafted him again... we picked up Thurley with our second pick, and Matthew Spencer in the same draft. Not a great draft year but there were certainly a couple of good players we could have taken - Dyson, Stanton, Mundy, Buchanan, Adcock, Fisher, LeCras... But if you look at other players taken in the same draft there were a whole bunch that never played half as many games as Tenace has. Take the good with the bad and move on I guess.
