Over the years we've been fighting out Until the final siren, showing plenty of promise. We have looked like a a really solid outfit. Much more newer and refreshed with new ideas going ahead. Yes, we looked like the Carlton of old. Only problem is... this has all been in the NAB cup!
Our last 2 Pre-season competition wins have ended up causing us pretty long seasons, and ended up being just about the only highlight.
Maybe it's because Pagan pushed us too hard to early, which forced us to run out of gas miles before the finish line. Or maybe it just wasn't a year to be..
I used to care about winning the Pre-season title but now it doesn't really mean anything to me. For me, i am only focusing on March 20 at the MCG when we teach those tigers a football lesson!
If this doesn't sound to rough, i hope we don't go very far in the nab cup because i want the boys to preserve their energy for when it really counts, as well as not risking injuring themselves.
So for me, I'm caring as much for the Nab cup win as I am for who becomes America's next top model!
Do any of you hope to see the blues take out the pre-season title this year or r u focussing solely and only on round 1 and onwards?
Carn the Blues

In Anthony Koutoufides book, he wrote about how Pagan pushed the team to unneccissarily perform their best during pre-season comps, which he stated made him increadingly fatigued, so you've hit the nail on head there buddy:thumbsu:.

Top Post..... I really hope we bow out first or 2nd round. That way ratten can really try new things without being scrutinised and players will not go as hard or get suspended as there are minimal cameras!!!!!!!!!!! It gives the boys the chance to take it a bit easier before the season and hopefully the boys get to play at the Old Home OO in the nab regional Challenge. I also hope tigs saints and essendon go out early because the team that wins or goes deep into the comp generally has a win first up. so thei deal situation would be for blues tigssaints and essedon to go out early so we are on a level playing field and so we can play 1 or 2 of em before the season to have a look at there plns for 08

the downside, of course, is that you have to play on suburban/country grounds which aren't up to AFL standard.

Exactly!! I would love us to pick all the kids and see them make about three rounds!
Not too sure how well the condition of rural grounds have picked up. This year was a really bad one with alot of comps starting late due to the drought and unplayable grounds! Victoria hasn't had much rain to change that this year. I would imagine the grounds in the north western part of the state would be out of action. Last thing we want is players going down on dodgy surfaces!

That really smacks of Pagan trying to keep his job, and that he thought a NAB Cup title or 2 might help that cause. The only good that came out of it was the $200K each for 05 and '07

In defense to Denis (and yes i agree he needed to go), I know for a fact there was alot of pressure from the board to win the money on offer for the NAB Cup - some $220,000 - with a $1million bonus for any team capable of also winning the AFL Premiership.

Yes you could say, well Denis you need to put the team first, but remember his job was hanging on by a thread at that time.

Apart from this, i'm not fussed if we win in the NAB Cup, I just want to come away from our NAB Cup campaign this year thinking the likes of Benjamin, Edwards, Grigg, Hampson, Armfield, Jamison all on the right track.

It is quite conceivable that we could go into the pre-season cup try new things and not push players too much (8 man interchange) and still manage to win the first two rounds!

If we win the first two I'd say we go for the win as well. 2 quality lead up games to the season (a week off after the final) and great for us to watch them live or on tv.

No, no, no...

He was saying he was becoming increasingly fatigued on account of all the....oh, wait a second, that's the Anthony Kiedis book I'm thinking of :p

I'm pumped for the NAB Cup just to see our boys run out again after the dry season! I'd also much rather see a win than a loss, so as long as the coaching staff aren't doing anything that will negatively impact our H&A season (which I'm quite confident they won't be), I have no issues winning the NAB Cup -psychologically, a string of wins would be the ideal way for our young group to come into the home and away season.

I also won't be overly devastated if we bow out of the NAB Cup round 1...

have to agree with Yoss. dont want to, but looks like i have to!!

wouldnt be fussed if we lost round 1 but i would like a win round 1 of the NAB, always good to start off with a win

but then round 2 probably prefer a loss!!

keep the team fresh for round 1 and play some more practice matches!!

What you also have to remember is that Denis Pagan didn't just push the team hard in the Pre-Season cup. He also didn't trial many of the young and inexperienced players which is what the NAB cup is used for. It is a perfect place to get young and inexperienced players a feel for the pace of AFL.

Denis would put the best team in which meant that players such as kouta who could've done with an extended break due to his age, had to play which made him so much more fatigued by the end of the season

...not to mention that deathly chill that returns to my spine when I hear Carlton fans (AGAIN!) talk about how (for WHATEVER reason) they would rather see their team lose games!!!

BlueYoss, hope you realize that I read your posts in that ridiculous, snobby English accent your avatar has. Drives me insane but for some reason I can't help it. Please change!
