OK, if you go by speed alone the 2.06 to 2.08's the last couple of years are the "best" I think best and fastest are 2 different things so here we go(no particular order)
1977-The 1 lap screamer everyone forgot-The 1977 Grid shows P Brock on pole with the first official lap in the 2.24's by a touring car, that was some lap itself but in unofficial practice the immortal Ian(black pete)Geoghean in the Bob Jane entered Torana got around the big hill in a mind bending 2.22, unfortunately they could only earn 8th spot in official practice and the car broke 30 laps into the race, bringing down the curtain on Janes Bathurst career.
1979-Saving the best till last-Peter Brock had laid waste to the best all opposition had to offer, Captain Peter Janson and open wheeler gun Larry Perkins headed up the trailing pack a mere 6 laps adrift, with Morris and Moffat surveying broken machinery in the pits and the second Dealer team A9X a written off wreck. Peter went out on lap 163 to show them just what he could do destroying the lap record with a fearsome 2.21.1, a race lap that it took until 1982(and 3 different models of Commodores) to beat.
1992-Is this why they don't let small cars in anymore (part one)-In friday qualifying Larry Perkins was on a rampage, his VL Commodore blowing away the factory VP's and Mobil VP and VL. As he stormed up the hill on his way to another 2.14 he was latched onto by a 2.5 litre moon rocket called a BMW M3 with Tony Longhurst at the wheel, at the end of it all Tony had a 2.15.2, easily booking a Tooheys Top 10 spot.
1998-Is this why they don't let small cars in anymore(part 2) Rickard Rydell was one of the best touring car drivers on the planet and the Volvo was one of the best cars, in the top 10 shootout they combined for a 2.14.9, a time that would put plenty of the 1998 V8's in the shade. He followed up the best way possible, combining with Jimmy Richards to hold off Steven Richards and Matt(demolition man)Neal leaving Audis, Vectras and BMW's either far behind or smoking wrecks.
1971-A world of his own-When you combine the most awesome touring car ever built with one of the sports masters at the height of his powers it's big trouble for everyone. The year before Alan Moffat had sat on pole with a lap around 2.50 in the Phase2 GTHO Falcon but the new Phase3 was different animal altogether. The 71 Bathust lineup had it all, young guns like Brock,Bond,Goss and Morris, skilled vets like Des West, John French, Bob Jane and Murray Carter and in their prime stars like Kev Bartlett, John Harvey plus many others just as prominent. Moffat simply blew them all away in qualifying with a 2.38.9(3 seconds better than anyone) and beat them all on the Sunday by a clear lap.
