Fremantle have done extremely well in balancing their list: two good small forwards in Ballantyne and Walters, outside runners in Hill and Pearce, first rucks in Sandilands and Griffin, rebounders in Johnson, Pearce, Duffield and Ibbottson and a very deep, flexible and defensive midfield.

How are we stacking up here and who can be reshuffled in the next little while? I've bolded who I think are (potential) dual position players. Taken some liberties with potentials draftees (in brackets)

Small defenders: Williams, Sinclair, Clarke, Ramsay, Broomhead
Medium defenders: Toovey, O'Brien,Oxley, Maxwell
Tall defenders: Brown, Keeffe, Goldsack, Frost
Wing: Sidebottom, Young, Seedsman
Inside mid: Ball, Thomas, (Adams)
In/Out mid: Pendlebury, Swan, Beams, Martin
Small forwards: Elliot, Fasolo, Blair, Dwyer, Kennedy, Mooney
Medium Forwards: Macaffer, (Karnezis)
Tall forwards: Cloke, Reid, Paine
First ruck: Grundy, Witts, Hudson
Mobile ruck: Lynch, (White)

You could make a number of formulations and no doubt some players will step up to succeed other players but I think we're filling some major holes.

A medium forward could be an issue, hence probably why we are looking at Karnezis (191) and a quality kick from defence in Henderson, in spite of his questionable defensive aspects.

I've tried to formulate a team that is a combination of being defensively strong as well as skilled.

FB: Goldsack, Brown, Williams
HB: Young, Keeffe, Toovey
C: Seedsman, (Adams), Sidebottom
HF: Fasolo, Reid, Macaffer
FF: Elliot, Cloke, Blair
F: Swan, Grundy, Pendlebury

INT: Thomas, Beams, (White) SUB: Kennedy

It's no easy thing to pick a potential team next year, although injury will no doubt narrow the field.

Still, I think we've got good coverage in most positions.

Nice attempt the only thing is I'd actually have both Reid in his own category "swingman".

I can't see him ever playing as a permanent forward for a whole season (unless we recruit some new tall defenders) but he will always be relied upon to return down back at times (e.g. vs Hawthorn and Sydney).

Yeah, I bolded people who could play dual position of which Reid and Goldsack are examples. It's exceedingly difficult to knuckle down a fixed position for many players as they are capable of playing 2-3 positions.

I reckon Sidebottom and without the same accolades, Macaffer, are capable of playing three positions which is very handy. Sidebottom can play wing, small forward and an outlet defender. Cafe a tagger, medium forward and small defender.

But overall I'm fairly satisfied with the positional depth, although you'd hope a Broomhead or Ramsay might overtake Sinclair, Adams to replace Ball and some quality at our two first round picks. I'd still make a Chappy play, money permitting.

Dunno about Chappy but Adams fills a yawing chasm of a need with Ball's playing days numbered. Whichever way the draft works out I would like to see us with Cloke, a couple of tall and mobile multi positional forwards (capable of rotating through and giving defensive coaches nightmares) Fas, Billy and perhaps Dwyer with our mids/wingers rotating through.

Desperately need some stability, direction and purpose coming out of the backline so would be prepared to have one player not playing 1V1 who has pace/footskills and footy smarts who can give it reliably to the link men.

Adams fills a hole in Ball who can't have too long left. We'd then have two inside mids in Adams and Thomas.

White similarly provides some insurance/competition for that mobile ruck/fwd role. I hope for more but don't expect anything ludicrous.

Karnezis is a potential medium tall who again I don't have enormous expectations on but won't hurt to have.

The Henderson trade seems a little off the map now but is I think a similar player to Young, so that would be good cheap insurance again.

The most glaring spot is seemingly another tall forward to assist Cloke. But I think Reid or Goldsack plus a White/Lynch can assist in that area.

I've been of the view for a while now that it's probably better to have a deep midfield and defence than star tall forwards. So long as your smalls and mediums are hit up and good finishers, it shouldn't matter. Get that goal spread.

Hell yeah spicey - not so long ago we were notorious for having 10+ goalkickers per game, got to get back to that again.

The thing that sticks out the most is there is the lack of tall mids. Need to recruit a Fyfe Mundy Griffen type in the centre.

I'd almost go Kennedy over Blair. Kennedy's quicker, more skillful but probably lacks the composure that Blair has, which will come with more game time.

And I honestly struggle to see how little Blairy will get a gig in that amazing midfield.

A forward line of Fasolo, Elliott and Kennedy gets my mouth watering.

Ball?

With new interchange rules coming in players who can play more than one position will become very important if it isn't already. Hawthorn did this very well in 2013 - it's difficult to think of anyone on their list who is a full time midfielder except for Sewell and perhaps Mitchell (though I think the reason less time in the midfield this season was more about preserving his body for finals rather than any real strategic consideration).

We have a few to many players who can only play one position imo.

Just the opening scenes in this clip shows some of the bits that the club has of something similar to this.

Interesting to note, they have Yagmoor as a medium defender.

Can someone expand the shot of the board at 1:10. Would be very interesting to look at.

Not convinced about a Cloke replacement yet.

At 27 next year, they better start getting a plan underway because it takes a good 4 or 5 years for a CHF to be up and running.

I reckon he may get squeezed out.
On balance of leadership and onfield mentoring I would hope not completely. Still has an immense role in our midfield and our team for that matter in simply showing how a player can get the most out of himself and give total value to his club.

Perhaps less midfield time with rotations into the forward line where his hardness can help keep the ball in there.

I sincerely hope the club has a plan to keep him around the club in some capacity, blokes of his calibre lift the entire organization.

Words just simply can't convey the total respect and admiration I have for Luke. I a world of "Screw you Jack, I'm OK" he couldn't find it within him to totally enjoy his part in our victory over his erstwhile club - who had obviously been in the process of screwing his career, still he found the time and heart to think of his team mates agony in his hour of triumph.

How proud am I that he wears OUR colours week in, week out?

IMMENSELY.

jeez we got some major problems if Cloke goes out for any period of time!!! 3 tall forwards to choose from, one an AA CHB and the other an undersized VFL player. This highlights exactly why Reid has to stay forward for us.. not only as a second tall forward option (apologies to Lynch) but as our only tall forward threat on the list if Cloke ain't there.

The KP tall is a major issue for us if we keep ending top of the ladder.

Maybe we anticipate paying top dollar for them through Free Agency or perhaps we see a draft where a few are on offer that we'll trade into, hoping one sticks.

Rendell is a fine selector of KP talent so maybe we have something lined up.

I suppose we may be planning for Darcy Moore next year?
