Let me tell you about the time the fun died in Sweet FA

Overnight, Ant Bear charged me and haydo (sorry mate) with a high impact offence for not submitting a team sheet for the Gumbies Round 2 clash against Las Vegas Bears.
4A) Submission Rules
The deadline for team sheet submission is the Thursday 11:59 PM Melbourne Time before a match unless stated otherwise by the admin. Teams must contain 20 eligible players, and be submitted in Official Team Sheet Submission Thread each round. Teams must note positional changes from the previous round, including where the player played last round and where they are playing this round. Failure to submit a team sheet in the correct format (20 eligible players, positional changes, correct spelling of every name within the whole team sheet and in the team sheet submission thread), or AT ALL will result in one of the following punishments based on the appropriate grading:

High Impact (2 point penalty + 1 game captain/s suspension):
- Failure to submit a complete team sheet in the submission thread by the deadline.
- Editing the team sheet after team sheet deadline

The offending team sheet is as follows:

The following section is my official defense for the charge applied.

Now, the average Joe will look at that and say "come on Baz, what the *" and I get it. I really do. These team sheets go to the simmers after midnight so they can sim the week's games so we can have them posted on time on a Sunday. And as a new match thread poster I should know better, right?

Let's break things down...

  • "The deadline for team sheet submission is the Thursday 11:59 PM Melbourne Time before a match unless stated otherwise by the admin"

I submitted the offending team sheet at 8:14pm Thursday. No issues here.

  • Teams must contain 20 eligible players, and be submitted in Official Team Sheet Submission Thread each round
  • Teams must note positional changes from the previous round, including where the player played last round and where they are playing this round
We'll come back to this

  • Failure to submit a team sheet in the correct format (20 eligible players, positional changes, correct spelling of every name within the whole team sheet and in the team sheet submission thread), or AT ALL will result in one of the following punishments based on the appropriate grading
The correct format. While rule 4A states 20 eligible players, positional changes, correct spelling of every name and posted in the team submission thread, Rule 4B expands on the formatting with the following:

Team sheets must be displayed in a logical format that is comprehensible by the game simmers. Each positional line {e.g. B, HB, C, HF, F, R, INT} must be defined clearly and in case of positional changes the specific positions must be communicated in the listed changes. If in doubt refer to the format shown in the OP of the team sheet submission thread.

The Gumbies week 2 team sheet was posted in binary as per the suggestion of the team. Translated, our team sheet this week is as follows (minus the sexy table formatting):

Changes:
Changes
BRABHFF to C
peterssC to HBF
WaLkEr_ThE_StArHBF to HFF

Let's go back a step, shall we?

  • Teams must contain 20 eligible players, and be submitted in Official Team Sheet Submission Thread each round
Check

  • Teams must note positional changes from the previous round, including where the player played last round and where they are playing this round
What would you know? Check

  • Failure to submit a team sheet in the correct format (20 eligible players, positional changes, correct spelling of every name within the whole team sheet and in the team sheet submission thread)
Well would you look at that! 20 eligible players, positional changes, correct spelling for every name including WaLkEr_ThE_StAr (go ahead, translate it...) AND submitted in the team sheet thread. Hmmmm, ok.

But why stop there? Let's look at rule 4B as well.

  • Team sheets must be displayed in a logical format that is comprehensible by the game simmers
Binary is just a language and converters are readily available on the internet. My team sheet is both logical and comprehensible even if not in English.

  • Each positional line {e.g. B, HB, C, HF, F, R, INT} must be defined clearly and in case of positional changes the specific positions must be communicated in the listed changes
Yep, done.

  • If in doubt refer to the format shown in the OP of the team sheet submission thread
This, in the legal world, is known as obiter dictum. It is an expression made to support the rule but is not a rule in itself.

So I contest that I have not broken any rules as written and should not face any sanction. My interpretation of the rules does not in any way constitute a breach of them. As such, I expect my team sheet above to be taken as valid and no penalty applied.

Hopefully everyone enjoys the ensuing discussion.

Thank you for your time

SEC [5]. Bringing the game into disrepute
If a player's actions are having a profoundly negative effect on the experience and functioning of the league, or against the spirit of the Sweet F.A e.g. whinging about the simmer or rules, manipulation of the rules, excessive trolling or spam, then the committee and the admin will convene in the tribunal to decide on a suitable punishment. Penalties will range from an official warning to match suspension/s, depending on the severity of the offence as adjudicated by the Administrator and the committee.

This is a clear breach of this rule here and will be met by at least an official warning Ant Bear

I'd argue interpretation over manipulation. Remember, this is a game and we're all here for fun. If anything, the Gumbies should receive bonus points!

we should make this round Binary Round and raise awareness of the Binary folk.

we could even play for the Gottfried Leibniz Cup!

Geez, the lengths some captains will do to play in JWS's bullshit competition.
