The Future of 'Potential'

Is he in our best 22?

With the emergence of Moran, Gill and the "potential" of Walker is Trent our best option. We still have Sellar yet to make his mark (at any level)

I was one before his injury that never understood the hype around him. I thought he was a prospect, but am now thinking it is time to move on.
Fully fit and in form he is the first picked in our forward line next year.

Personally, I have always said that we can'e exect much from Rowdy this year and 2009 is the year that will tell us a lot more about where he is at. I would give him a 1 year deal and give him a genuine chance to get back to the AFL standard. With another PS under his belt, I am confident he can be a very good player for us next year.

Having said that, I think the club has already made up their mind and he will not be getting a contract for next year with us.

I don't see a problem in offering Trent a performance based contract for next year. You are not losing a hell of a lot in doing so but potentially you are gaining a lot.

When ever a club comes out and says that player's future will be decided after the trade week it pretty much means that player won't be at the club next year.

While I'm not convinced, on reading some of the comments you all have made, perhaps a 1 year deal is the best option. I'm sure the Club would only offer it if they felt there was a chance he could come back at AFL level.

I don't think it should be any surprise that he is having "niggly" muscular injuries, given that he wasn't able to put in full preseason.

I would have thought a twelve month contract would be the sensible thing to do, and take the punt that with a decent preseason behind him, he has every opportunity afforded him in trying to get back to where he was.

I'd hate us to cut him loose, then see him picked up by someone else and see him come back bigger and better than ever.

I would not say a tough descion whats hard about saying Thanks Trent you served us well but it time to move on

There's nothing hard about saying that if the club truly believes he's finished. I don't believe there's evidence to suggest yet that he is. He's worth another preseason and another 12 months.

I really hope we keep Hentschel. It seems like, after two long years, that he's got one more hurdle to cross. I'd hate to delist him now.
Yeh, but the other side of it is...now that they have seen him recover from his knee injury, they can examine his mobility in real time and possibly are discovering that he just won't cut it anymore.

Very cruel. Trent was one of my favourites.

Yes..but are the issues (lack of mobility) he's experiencing now a result of ongoing problems with his knee - or is it related to a lack of general fitness as a result of not having done a full preseason? If its the latter, you'd have to think its still worth taking a punt for another twelve months. If it is still knee related, then sadly yes, its time to go.

I don't think his mobility has been affected that much. Sure it won't be what it was, but the couple of times I saw him in the SANFL he looked quite agile and had confidence with his knee.
