I wrote the following a week ago before our win over Brisbane, and I still stick by it. The win over Brisbane was fantastic for the Club, the Players and even more so for the supporters. Sure missing out on pick 20 will be a shame, but a hell of a lot more positive energy and synergy would come from winning games IMO.

I want to finish 15th. I want to avoid the wooden spoon at all costs. I'm sorry I simply can't accept a wooden spoon.

Also, I don't think having Pick Number 1 is all that it is cracked up to be. I'm not even sure is Gibbs will be Pick Number 1. Hansen and Gumbleton all look good to me. I think they will all have good careers. But who will have the best career? Who wil be the best player in the long haul, over the next 10 to 15 years? Noone really knows the answer to that, you can only give your best educated guess. I think this year there is just as much a chance of Pick 2 and 3 being as good a player as Pick 1 just like back in 01 with Hodge/Ball/Judd. I don't think Eagles fans are too upset about missing out on gaining Pick 1 that year.

What would be more of a nuisance would be missing out on the first pick in the PSD and the advatages that holds, but hey I can live with that.

The other thing is that to finish 15th we have to win at least one game. Winning games is a good thing!!! Winning games builds confidence. I think our young players deserve the feeling that comes with winning. I think that if we were to lose every game from here on that would actually cause more harm than good. A large part of the difference between players and clubs at AFL level is the mental side of things. AFL is a tough sport. I dont want our players to develop a losing mentality. We should go into preseason training with a win or two under our belts. Players like Lee and Dempsey should at least experience playing in 1 Essendon win.

We have already bottomed out, we are playing most of our youngsters. To climb back up the ladder we need to take small steps. The next step to take is to win a game.

Before the brissie game i wanted the number one picks in both drafts but im starting to think your right. Seeing the boys win was great to watch and also gave me a warm feeling inside. Plus ur right, at least if we get the 2nd pick we wont have the pressure of worrying about who to pick.

Though id be spewing if Gibbs ends up having a stellar 15 year career at Carlton and they pick up someone awesome in the PSD at pick 1

Im not worried where we finish...looks like a VERY deep draft this time round.
We either get a gun onballer or a potentially gun KP player. How can we lose!!
Win as much as we can to set the ball rolling for next season.

We need not worry about our first pick, it's the rest of them we have to nail for our future to push on strong. We've added quality and now also have some depth on the list, if we keep that up we can become a strong team again.

I'm not worried about Carlton picking up a gun with the PSD picks, guns are rarely available, there should be a good young player available at number two.

We wont get the number one pick but we have 2 get the priority. It'll be a very good player.

Rischetelli could go PSD... then u'll b worried. As you said, there arent many guns in the PSD draft so there's a big difference between 1 and 2.

there are 2 things in life that remain constant death and tax, am i right?... yes

there are also 2 things in afl that is constant, the aim is to win and winning = supporters are happy

throwing a third element in, a good draft pick is no certainty of winning games it helps yes but does not = success, success is giving 110% every match and making the supporters happy, that has nothing to do with draft picks

and il ask you one thing, a gibbs walking into a club knowing that he and his fellow draftees are dubbed the most talented for a long time, would that be good for the club having an 18 year old thinking they are better?? there are alot of variables that could change the course of a no.3 = judd, that could be injury, form, dud, falling out with club, wanting to go home etc..... give me a win any day :D

If we lose all games from now on in I think it'd be hugely dissapointing for the club and undo the confidence boost that we got last week. In the end the answer to the original question probably depends on what long term is? 1 year? Probably a few consistent wins now. 5-10 yrs? Probably the priority pick.

If you think about that way, its a bit of a non issue isnt it.
