The Blues have been playing stop gap footy for many years now as we cover our lack of drafts, poor recruiting, bad draft policy, retirements, and plain bad decisions........

These stop gaps have meant players have been played WELL out of position meaning they have not played as WHO they are, or have had to perform roles well beyond their years and have not had the chance to play to WHO they are (second year rookie..murphy).

These players include the likes of Murphy, Walker, Waite, Gibbs who will be able to play AS THEMSELVES for the first time at the blues in 2008.

So Additional players to the team this year from last year, playing as they should and where they should:

Anderson, Austin, Benjamin, Armfield, Bower, Browne, Edwards, Grigg, Hampson, Hadley,Hartlett, Jackson, Aisake, Pfieffer, Judd, Stevens, Walker, Gibbs, Waite, Murphy, Kreuzer, Houlihan.

Players who were playing as themselves:

Fevola, Betts, Fisher, Simpson, Carrazzo, Bentick, Thornton, Setanta (when not rucking), Wiggins, Scotland, Saddington, Cloke, Ackland, Blackwell, Bannister, Bower, Russel.

(Russel, Betts, Cloke and even Setanta have all been pinch hitting but served long stints in correct position)

So here we are .... this is pretty full on when you consider these guys will be brand new, or playing where and how they should come 2008....

Anderson, Austin, Benjamin, Armfield, Bower, Browne, Edwards, Grigg, Hampson, Hadley,Hartlett, Jackson, Aisake, Pfieffer, Judd, Stevens, Walker, Gibbs, Waite, Murphy, Kreuzer, Houlihan.

Stevens is questionable, but for mine was definitely out for 2007. As mentioned murphy played his role, but taking the number one tagger really means this will be a New Addition.

Highly questionable, and drawing some fine lines, but you get the idea of waht depth can add to the team...exciting stuff.

In the words of Team America........ "F**K Yeah"!!! :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm so excited to see a revamped group of guns who will show what they are truly made of....no more losing by big margins and getting more than 16 points in a season.

These guys need to play where they are good at!

Definitely! ..........good post!

and I think the mature minds in the team (Judd, Stevens) will not let us get belted. It's when we get a few goals behind that they will step up and lead by example. When leadership is required, they will lead by example.

Something that has been lacking in previous seasons.

Also, there might be a few surprises who also step up and decide to lead.
ie Houlihan, Fev, Thorton.

Exciting 2008 guaranteed! :thumbsu:

This is where our biggest improvement will come from. Our midfield quality and depth has improved out of sight, and this will help imensely when the 2008 season rolls around.

However, with the continued development of Carlos, Austin, Bower and Jamison, we could really be developing a pretty handy back-half for quite a few years to come.

Very exciting times for us Carlton supporters.

You've made some good points. I just hope it does not take us 4-6 weeks into the season before players start getting used to their 'new' positions. I know we are not taking the pre-season cup seriously, but I hope we get through round 1. I think we need to get as many competitive hit outs with players playing in their new (proper) positions so we can practise executing our game plan effectively.

Who knows what it all means for us. One thing is for sure though is that it's onward and upward. And as Ratts says, at a minimum we'll fight to the death. Its an exciting year to be blue in 2008!!

No one is holding a gun to your head to read it, and if you have nothing good to say then its probably best you keep your comments to yourself.

I think we can all take heart out of the last 6 weeks of 2007.

Yes, i konw we lost and apart from the North game we were competitive considering we were fielding our youngest and most inexperience teams.

With the improvement off field admin and coaches, and with Judd, Hadley, Stevens, you could really see how we could have managed half a dozen more wins in 2007...which for me would show we should make a decent improvement in 2008, 9 odd wins....

And so true that kids can start playing in positions they are suited to, for me one of those would be Houlihan up forward.

pointless thread full of crap
you sure your not from richmond or one of those other scummy clubs...

good post audas and i think exactly the same...

all of our younger brigade have been thrown into the spotlight and havnt been able to establish themselves as footballers due to the lack of stuff up top (good players and coach). These teenagers have been playing the postions that should be occupied by our elite players but in the last few years we havnt had any so players like murphy are taking a full load but next year they'll be playing almost loose with stevens and judd taking the 1st and 2nd best mids....

should be a great year but not expecting too much too soon....

Its really exciting, got over confident last year and we lost Stevens, things went pear shaped. We are looking significantly better than start of last, hard to keep the lid.

Betts, Fisher, Waite are others that could step up. Waite becoming a dominant forward would be nice. Can really get down around his feet, runs supeeeerbly, and has an x-factor (also has a bit of mongrel about him).

Betts would be nice to see him amp up his goal scoring, not sure how he going to go though.

Fish - would like to see him moving laterally in the forward fifty picking up pack marks.

I remember thinking the same thing last year, as soon as we lost stevens our year was effectively over, his just such an important leader in the midfield, and as stated, was taking the no 1 tagger allowing murph, simpson and co to run free a bit. Add Judd to that mix as well and our midfield is 1st class in 08, no doubt about that.

We've always been able to kick big scores so our foward line is fine, it's just whether or not we can stand up in defense, my guess is 'this year' we won't, but i think in a couple of years time, Jamison will come on to take a key position and setanta as well, along with the continued improvement of bower, thornton, anderson, and maybe another high draft pick we will definately be a real chance for the flag in about 2 years i rekon.

exciting times ahead!

2 minutes of my time wasted.
I take it you skimmed through it, right? Or maybe you truthfully beleive Anderson, Austin, Benjamin, Armfield, Bower, Browne, Edwards, Grigg, Hampson, Hadley,Hartlett, Jackson, Aisake, Pfieffer, Judd, Stevens, Walker, Gibbs, Waite, Murphy, Kreuzer and Houlihan will infact be worthless.

Dribble. Do your homework.
