Thats right! Next Gen!!

keep your cheerleading for your wussy obsolete current gen HD (SD???) consoles/duct taped gamecube(s) out of here. :thumbsd:

this thread is to report on next gen rumours and to speculate and theorise about what direction the console manufacturers could take their gameboxes as we plod towards the eighth generation of videogaming.

Nintendo (home console) Part 1

Microsoft

The great satan has proven to be a fearsome competitor this gen sinking billions of dollars into kockblocking Sony from getting the lucrative hardcore approval. This is shown in the long list of million selling games in their catalogue and their core customers' remarkable brand loyalty despite the outrageous RROD failures.

They had a viable strategy this gen, come in early and build a sizeable marketshare with early adopters and eventually implement an aggressive pricing strategy to win over the mass market leaving its competitors in its wake.

but who saw the Wii coming..... and is it any wonder.....have you seen the size of the little white engine that could?

pswii60.jpg

"hey fatties .....leave me some room!!!"

but should Microsoft really be feeling threathened?

They risk diluting their brand and street cred with their core market if they lurch too far into the casual-happy region. You only have to look at the sales failures of games like Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Viva Pinata

For this reason, it would be anathema to copy the Wii strategy and to go cheap and underpowered next gen and I believe that some key points of their future console could include:

1)A traditional moderately expensive entry price -

It should be high enough to fund a true next gen console that is powerful enough to retain its hardcore street cred and be graphical competitive throughout its lifecycle. It should not however be so batshit insane like Sony to dig themselves into an unprofitable blackhole.

2)Heavy investment into middleware and userfriendly development kits -

One of the saddest things about this generation is the trainwreck of unprofitability the steep development costs of HD games has left many companies.

Furthermore, the global economical crisis will have struck a killerblow to the industry. It used to be a common sight for maverick publishers to borrow heavily and fund the AAA titles that are so craved for by fanboys. If their gamble paid off, they quickly became the Activisions and Ubisofts of the world. On the other hand if their investment flops, its not a big deal to just borrow more moolah to fund their next videogame gamble.

With easy the easy credit all but gone, it will be increasingly difficult to raise capital for such a risky investment like videogame development. If the majority of publishers are already bleeding cash in current generation technology, how is Microsoft going to coax them into making games for their new console?

One way is to develop an industry standard middleware like EPIC's Unreal engine to cut down drastically the long and costly development cycles of modern videogames. Microsoft could subside this engine and recoup their money by charging a higher license fee for companies who want to use this carrot. Venture capitalists and banks would look more favourably at this reduction in risk when deciding on lending capital and publishers would find it easier to develop profitable games.

3) Embrace Digital Distribution -

I'm not sure if any Bfers noticed this interesting development in downloadable content. The GTA 4 addon will be marketed in brick and motar stores as well as online. Customers who buy the retail version will receive a serial number which will allow them to download the addon on Xbox Live.

This will be a great idea imo to slowly lure the mass market consumer online (since the pricedrop, around 50% of consoles sold has been the offline arcade version), while at the same time diminishing the influence of piracy. Microsoft could sell two versions of a game at brick and motar stores to target the laymen customer: the traditional disc version and a less expensive DLC edition. Once online, cheaper games could be the carrot that lures the consumer towards the lucrative subscriber cash cow of Xbox live gold. If the customer is used to buying games online, it will be more likely that they will see value in other digital distribution of entertainment like Netflix.

Imo this is a great way to differentiate yourself from Nintendo and target the mass market without damaging your image with your core demographics.

well now....that was a post of epic proportions...

i agree with pretty much all of it too....you were the perfect person to start this thread as well lol

but i doubt much info will come rolling in anytime soon to this thread.....
the next gen is still pretty damn far away but downloadable titles will definitely be alot more mainstream than it currently is

next gen i will most likely own both a sony and microsoft system...and by that time i'm almost certain i'll be buying most games on the microsoft console
i can't imagine them not dominating the console market with a RELIABLE system this time

Sony (Home console)

Imagine planning a fine dining restaraunt.

Top quality ingredients, the best chefs and waiters and luxurious atmosphere. Costs be damned if we have the finest of everything, the patrons will come!!!

Imo this is an apt analogy on how the PS3 was conceived.

Lets face it. Sony became drunk with success. They were coming from two generations of overwhelming dominance with the PS2 garnering an obscene 70% marketshare. However success can be a bitch....it can give you a false sense of security and make you lose touch with your core customer.

With Ken Kutaragi at its helm, the PS3 became an amalgamation of bleeding edge technologies.

I can still remember the hype when rumours of the PS3 were starting to leak out 4 or 5 years ago. Not happy with the videogame market, Sony was positioning the console to help them take over the world with everything from consumer electronics, the home movie industry and the personal computer market.

The videogame industry had been following a pretty standard path for 20 years: better graphics, innovative gameplay and a stronger collection of games than your competitors.

On paper the PS3 couldn't fail, they had planned the console to be the "finest restaraunt ever built" with billions sunk into game studios and developing the Cell processor and integrating the bluray format.

However cracks were beginning to appear even before launch. Firstly the PS3 was originally planned to have two cell processors, one acting as the traditional cpu and the other as a gpu. However they overestimated the capabilities and ease of programming of their new technology and were forced to accept a rushjob of a gpu from Nvidia to make their launch date.

Like the ghost of the Sega Saturn, this meant that developers had to deal with combining a powerful but hard to program cpu with a relatively underpowered gpu to get the best performance.

Furthermore, having to contend with not one but two bleeding edge technologies meant constant delays as there was problems with chip yields of the Cell processor and shortages of the laser diodes of the bluray drive.

As we say......the rest is history.

Unbeknownst to the head honchos of Sony, they were sailing into the perfect storm of treacherous market conditions. First came the Wii which turned the industry on its head and left Sony fighting tooth and nail with Microsoft for the relatively small hardcore segment. Then came the worldwide economic crisis and the shit really hit the fan.

2009 could be the year that breaks Sony's back.

First of all Sony has spared no expense when developing the ultimate experience for videogame fans. They have an army of first party and second party developers building a sizeable list of big budget titles for the console.

This includes:

1) Polyphony Digital (gran turismo 5)
2) Guerilla Games (Killzone 2)
3) Quadratic Dreams (Heavy Rain)
4) Team Ico (Secret title)
5) Level 5 (White Knight Chronicles)
6) Sony Santa Monica (God of War)
7) Sony Liverpool (Wipeout series)
8) Insomniac (Rachet and Clank, Resistance)
9) Suckerpunch (Infamous)
10) Naughty Dog (Uncharted)
11) Zipper Interactive (Socom, MAG)
12) Evolution Studios (Motorstorm)
13) Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet)
14) Clap Hanz (Hotshots Golf)
15) SCE Japan Studio (Project Siren, Locoroco, Patapon)
16) SCE Bend Studio (Syphon Filter)
17) SCE Foster City Studio (Lair)
18) SCE San Diego (sports games)
19) SCE Studio Cambridge/Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword)
20) Many PSN developers including Dark Star and Q entertainment.

*short pause for PS3 fanboys to change their soiled pants*

Let there be no mistake.....this is an impressive list of titles for videogame fans.....but from a financial point of view, it could be an absolute disaster for Sony.

Many of these games are coming out in 2009 when market conditions are terrible for an expensive console that is hundreds of dollars more expensive than its competitors.

First of all, Sony is a japanese company that makes 80% of their income in overseas markets like America and Europe. An unfortunate result of the global meltdown has been the sudden strengthening of the Yen against foreign currencies like the Euro and the American Dollar.

This is largely due to the unwinding of the Yen carry trade (Google to learn more)

If you were watching the currency markets, this was a big reason why the value of the Australian dollar went from around 104 yen to 57 yen in a short period of time.

The strengthening of the yen is extremely bad news for a japanese export company like Sony with already tiny profit margins. This is because their income is earned from foreign currencies and when converted to a strong yen, their profits would be slashed accordingly. This also means their already costly console is more expensive for their foreign retail stores to purchase cutting their margins. This is why Sony recently announced that a number of consumer electronic products were going up in price when sold to retailers by 33% in the United Kingdom.

Furthermore these game development studios are costing a huge amount of money.

Lets use Gureilla Games and Killzone 2 as an example.

It is reported that they have over 200 developers working on the game.

Killzone 2 has been in development for around 4 years

Lets make an assumption that the average developer earns 80000 dollars a year

200 x 80000 x 4 = 64 million dollars

and that is just the cost of manpower...no mention of equipment investment and marketing bill to advertise the product.

If we make another assumption that Sony receives 20 dollars for each game they sell..... it will take over three million copies in sales just to break even.

Sony could afford to own so many studios when they had an install base of 150 million consoles......but they are a shadow of their former self.

High development costs, and smaller profits due to currency fluctuations....

It is simply an unsustainable situation from a financial point of view.

So finally we come to the million dollar question: How can Sony turn it around?

This is a plan that I've theorised:

1) Forget about nextgen (for awhile) and competing with Microsoft using bleeding edge technologies.

Yes, literally the ten year plan.....with a catch.

It is likely that we will see new/updated consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo in around 2010-2011. Sony should forget about releasing a new console in that time frame...... that will destroy their corporation financially.

IMO, the graphical quality of the PS3 when programmed by experienced developers is powerful enough to satisfy the majority of consumers.

They should work on minaturising the design and cutting costs for a relaunch of the PS3 at an affordable price when their competitors release their new consoles.

At the moment Sony has lost the mindshare of the mass market due to its prohibitive entry price. IMO, only by remarketing their brand can they hope to win back the hearts and minds of consumers.

2) Do not just copy Nintendo.

Do not just add a waggle controller and kiddy games and expect the consumers to embrace it. The reason for Nintendomination is in smart marketing by targeting everyone, not just hardcore gamers.

They should look for ways for capturing the mass market in different ways to Nintendo.

I have an idea.

Two words

National Geographic

Families absolutely love nature documentaries...... it is educational and they can enjoy together as a shared endeavor. Look at how popular Steve Irwin was in America.

There are already a few games that try to give these types of experiences including Endless Ocean (Wii), Aquanaut's Holiday (PS3) and Afrika (PS3)......however the market is small atm and largely untapped.

Sony should remarket their affordable redesigned PS3 as the console for the nature and wildlife experience.

The world is getting ravaged by climate change and it is likely that many animals and environmental wonders like the Great Barrier Reef will disappear in the coming decades.

Therefore Sony could align their console as a cheap and affordable way to enjoy these endangered treasures by developing a series of nature and wildlife simulations. eg: a modern take on Pokemon Snap and launch them in 2011/2012 when their competitors release their consoles.

Perhaps even start an environmental fund where a portion of each game sold goes to save a minke whale....uhm maybe a bad example >,>

Afrika was a flop in Japan due to the PS3's expensive price, however I believe there is an untapped market for these types of games at the right price.

think I'm crazy?

a few numbers

Nintendogs: 20 million copies sold and rising
Brain training series: over 30 million copies sold and rising

PCs will always be ahead of any console generation :D

yeah, thats why I never understand why early adopters pay such a high price for videogame consoles. They're basically paying extra to quality control these new products.

If you want bleeding edge, you can't beat the PC!!

Why call this the next gen thread if you are going to speak so much about the current gen?

You said yourself "keep your cheerleading for your wussy obsolete current gen HD (SD???) consoles/duct taped gamecube(s) out of here."

Then in your first post you talk about the Wii, XBOX 360 and PS3, then in post 6 you talk heavily about the PS3 and it's future.

This should be the vent thread, because it is certainly not about the next gen.

I was obviously being facetious.....have you seen the games board?

is there any thread where there isn't fanboy cheerleading?

Too early to really speculate on the next gen. I doubt there will even be any preliminary info in the near future, especially in regards to Sony who have made their console to last for a while, even if it doesn't have the sales figures of the Wii and 360.

Although, I can't see Nintendo or Microsft wanting to release a new console anytime soon.

The Wii is doing incredibly well, and even though the technology is not up to the standard of its competitors, as long as it continues to aim at casuals, it should last for a while.

Disregarding the RROD, Microsft have no incentive to release a new console just yet. The 360 is hitting its peak and they have gone all out to secure the best games possible. It may use DVD DL as opposed to blu ray, but the recent update nullifies that somewhat and its graphical capabilities are better than the PS3's.

Microsft were quickest off the mark with the 360 this gen with the failure of the original xbox but with the PS3 yet to take off, and in fact dwindling in sales, Microsft will probably continue support for the 360 for a while yet.

yeah, I'll do Nintendo next...... they're in no way a perfect situation.

If Sony has been kicked in the nuts by the strong yen....guess what? so has Nintendo...... profit margin slashed in half.

As for the next gen consoles being too far away?

Xbox360 released in 2005

Microsoft is in a reasonably strong position, while Sony financially is going to be kicked in the nuts next year when the financial crisis REAAALLLY gets bad.

Their best move would be to release a new console reasonably soon and hope Sony takes the bait....

because I think it will bankrupt the company.

That means only Nintendo to take care of.

You may not be too far off there with National Geographic. Did you see the recent news that National Geographic have actually bought the rights for Afrika and will be releasing it Nth America as "National Geographic: Africa". Hopefully it comes out here too, I'd be interested in checking it out.

I can't agree or disagree, as there is too long to go in this gen to start deciding on what is or what will work, Sony can still come out of this battle on top, with the 2009 line up and an early 2009 price drop expect to see sales rise alot.

Although what I will say is that if Sony and Microsoft want to beat Nintendo, then next-gen they should team up, put all the hatred behind them, team up and using Sony's technical prowess, etc. and Microsoft's money, marketing, etc. they could make the ultimate console, thump Nintendo and in the process get every single awesome game on the one 'Super' console(Depending on how Nintendo choose to make their next console).

hehe, didn't know that

According to Shane Bettenhausen from the 1up network Afrika is a pretty spectacular experience with some pokemon snap to boot :3

No doubt it could work. Atm Nintendo is sitting on the sidelines and waiting for the 500 pound gorilla and 800 pound elephant to kill each other.

However...imo.... it is more likely that Microsoft will try to kill Sony off (at least from the videogame console industry) by outspending them.

Make no mistake.....microsoft has money running out of every orifice of their body. They have like 50 billion dollars in the bank.

Sony's shareprice has fallen so much in recent times that theoretically Microsoft could buy Sony and sell off its assets for a tidy profit.

although I'm still waiting for the first next gen console to be released that basically IS a cut down thoroughbred gaming PC. Mouse / streamlined keyboard / controller included.

if they embrace the modders/homebrewers and bleeding edge hardcore gamers, then I might finally be able to do away with my gaming PC.

Nintendo (home console) - Part 1: checklists to complete before the transition to next gen

A combination of brilliant marketing, innovation and competitive pricing strategy has seen to it that Nintendo become the most profitable videogame company in the history of the industry. According to their conservative estimates, they expect to reach an install base of over 50 million consoles by the end of the financial year and it is becoming pretty clear that Nintendo has built an insurmountable lead this generation.

So they've won, what now?

There are still some weaknesses in their business model which Nintendo should try to solve before transitioning towards a new console.

1) Train your army of new gamers to become more hardcore

I remember my first gaming experience. It was a game & watch clone which consisted of moving a commando side by side to shoot enemy soldiers. It would be equivalent to a el cheapo mobile phone game nowadays.

Then I gradually graduated to consoles and the pc with platformers like Mario and Commander Keen. The rest is history.

There is no secret genetic trait that bestows special powers of button mashing ability to modern day gamers. It is built through experience and unhindered by a fear of technology.

Thats why it can be kinda snotty and elitist to look at the customers of games like Brain Training and Wiifit with disdain as some sort of inferior species of gamer. In many instances, this is their "game & watch", ie: their entry into the world of gaming and should be targeted by videogame developers as such.

Nintendo is having some success in converting new customers to more complicated games like Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart but a quick look at the Wii back catalogue will reveal

a) Top tier Nintendo games which receive the most marketing effort including Wiifit, Mario games, Zelda etc

b) Lesser known Nintendo games which are usually sent out to die without advertising including Battalion Wars 2, Wario Land: Shake it, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Excite Truck, Fire Emblem etc

c) Shovelware: companies trying make a quick buck by targeting casual gamers with el cheapo games

d) Shovelware mark 2: companies trying to make a quick buck with a cheap port of games from other formats.

e) Top and medium quality 3rd party games lost in the miasma of shovelware: eg: Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Blastworks, De Blob etc.

The average consumer doesn't read game blogs or trawl around message boards arguing with fanboys about which console has the bigger penis. When making a buying decision they rely on traditional forms of advertising like television, word of mouth, the cover art and the display presence at the store.

For this reason, its no surprise that the big sellers are the Nintendo games that receive the most marketing....by an overwhelming margin.

A feature the Wii has to its advantage is its lower development costs, so even a 3rd party game like No More Heroes which sold 500 000 copies can earn a tidy profit and justify a sequel. However at face value it wouldn't seem as lucrative as a big success on the X360.

How can Nintendo change this status quo?

It is pretty simple imo..... 5 words

Heart

Foundation

Tick

Of

Approval

If you think the average consumer has it tough making informed decisions at the videogame aisle, try shopping in a supermarket and gaze at the tens of thousands of different products.

It can be very time consuming buying the right foods that will keep you nourished and not give you cancer or heart diease in 20 years.

Thats why the branding of the Tick of Approval can have such a powerful effect. Customers trust that someone has done the tests to work out which foods are healthy and they can make a quick buying decision when they see the label.

In this way, Nintendo could use the power of their brand to help out and showcase third party developers who try their best to make top quality games.

Now I know what some of you are thinking...

"WTF, Nintendo already tried that with their ironic NES Seal of Quality and there were full of shitty games with this label"

What you probably didn't know was that back then, Nintendo was battling license infringers like Atari and pirates who were making games for the console by bypassing the traditional paid model. The Seal of Quality was not to advertise that the game was any good to play but that the consumer was receiving a genuine Nintendo product which would work properly on the game system.

By bringing back a proper Nintendo Tick of Approval to showcase good games, this would give 3rd party developers the incentive to actually put the effort to make top quality games. It is also more likely that retail stores would give these games a better display presence at the store in the belief that they would sell better. This free advertising would lessen the risk of failure and create competition to release the best games.

In fact..... kill two birds with one stone: have meaning interactions with the hardcore videogame community.

Neogaf, Beyond3d, Kotaku, Gamespot, 1up etc are bastions of hardcore intelligentsia and are full of consumers who will only buy quality games that are fun to play.

By giving gamers an avenue to voice their opinions on games they like, you get a twin pronged effect: free product testing and the likelihood that some gamers will feel engaged enough to be evangelists who will spread positive word of mouth to help the game and make the system successful.

Maybe call the brand the Gamer's Choice to show that the product has some sort of street cred.

2) Please be nice to 3rd Party developers

Nintendo historically has had a love hate relationship with 3rd party game developers. During the NES generation when they ruled the roost, they were ruthless and even illegal with their anti-competitive business models which could literally bankrupt fledgling videogame developers.

For example, they would put limits on how many games a publisher could release a year and force them to order a shipment of cartridges in advance from Nintendo to manufacture. If they over estimated the potential sales, the cost of these unsold cartridges could put them out of business.

Thats why there was such an embrace of the Playstation when Sony entered the fold........ they were the Kevin Rudd of the videogame industry

ie: Not John Howard (Nintendo)

Since then not much has changed.

Besides a few dedicated companies like Capcom, most 3rd party developers are more likely to embrace the other consoles because they feel they can't compete with Nintendo.

But that begs the question

"If Nintendo is making so much money, do they need to be nice to 3rd Party developers?"

Yes. Absolutely.

Videogames are still a very volatile investment and if Nintendo can only rely on themselves to make games that sell, they risk taking the biggest hit if there is another revolution in the industry and someone else captures their core market. Look at the 2008 christmas holiday lineup...... it is almost embarrassing comparing it to their competitors. Thats alot of potential lost sales.

As they say variety is the spice of life and a sign of a healthy console is one with a wide range of videogames.

eg: Nintendo Ds: everyone is making money with that console.

There needs to be better communication with 3rd party developers so that they can plan properly for the future.

It must have been quite horrifying for Lucasarts to see Nintendo announce the Wii Motionplus when they already invested alot of money in a clone wars lightsaber game. As they were forced to use simple waggle controls, they didn't receive positive reviews from the game media and was a detriment to their sales.

Another good strategy is the forementioned Tick of Approval.

So in conclusion, Nintendo is kicking arse financially but all is not well with the business model and they face risks in the future from competitors coopting their marketshare if they continue to play the lone wolf.

I'll do what Nintendo should do to transition to the next gen next time....because this post is already too long.

I think Sony was starting to do that with the PS3.....ie: the forementioned taking over of the pc market.

You could install Linux to it and turn it into a PC.....but they kind of gimped it because you could only used the general purpose part of the Cell processor. Not ideal for games me thinks.

Yep, I remember initially I thought that it was going.. I was all for the PS3 bandwagon in the hopes that this will be the bridge between consoles and PC's, having the best of both worlds, but alas the amount of homebrew is minima.... With everyone stuck behind the PS3 hypervisor layer there's little chance of anything major in terms of modding/editing/expansion

yeh modding exists but to an extremely small degree

UT3 has many map and weapon and character mods that were cooked for the ps3 but with nobody playing this game in australia i stopped caring since it was next to impossible to get a fast game

that game also has full keyboard and mouse support

just thinking of this game pisses me off though....i was NEVER going to play the single player for it and online never even put a full game lobby together :thumbsd:
