Serious question and not looking to cause a flare up, but what is the actual game plan (brand, if you are a Fox commentator) are we are trying to play?

The first two games I thought we were a lot more direct, straight through the middle, and then the awesome WCE bomb into the forward line to top of the good work.

Today and since then, have been going around the boundary line and THEN bombing it in.

What exactly are we trying to achieve under the new coach?

Trying to get the Worsfold out of our system. Is going to take a while. After all, we have been bombing into the forwardline foe 15 years.

Not sure what you are expecting? The list is in a deplorable shape, the midfield is Shizzen lead by Ploddus the Serial Butcher.

Dont like him playing 3 rucks.

We need as many runners as possible for the whole game not just the last quater when the sub comes on.

And it looked like he always planned to sub lycett.

You cant rely on that we could of got a injury and then we would of been stuck with 3 rucks for the whole game.

Read that at "The Simpsons" game plan.

I think we are trying to implement a game plan similar to Hawthorn's but we don't have the skills to pull it off. So instead of taking marks, it usually ends up in contests. When the ball becomes contested, the players seem to panic and revert to our old game style of hand-balling to anyone (usually under pressure) or bombing the ball forward.

I think what made our tall forward line so potent in the past is the pressure our forwards applied if they weren't able to mark it. ATM we don't implement a forward press as much and JD looks like the only forward actually putting pressure on the opposition defenders.

Our defensive structure is very strong, similar to Fremantle's. I can't work out if this is due to our personnel or is an actual game plan (probably a bit of both).

TLDR: Our fwd structure seems similar to previous years but with less pressure; we're very focused on having a defensive structure; and we're trying to move the ball like Hawthorn but we just suck at it. It really does look like the players are trying to adapt to the new game plan, but when under pressure they revert to the old one.

Not expecting anything tbh, just trying to gauge exactly what the players are doing because at the moment it is indecipherable.

We looked most dangerous on the counter attack, but you can't win games kicking over the press and running onto it. Not in my opinion anyway.

Where has our press / forward pressure gone?

Jack Darling aside the lack of forward pressure in general is abysmal and needs to be sorted out. Large portions of the match our midfield are uncompetitive and flat, and that is work rate you get the ball you create to opportunities you put the opposition under pressure.

Then there is the deplorable form in front of goal which is costing us perhaps any chance of building towards a return to the finals.

Having said that our defence is holding up ok and that is where it seems the game plan is to be launched from yet in the middle and up front are the areas that are letting us down in the overall quest to adapt the style of Simmo

Was mostly staggered at the lack of any kick in set up. A lot of the time they were poorly executed long bombs to 2 on 1's, not in our favour.

The 3 rucks isn't working because going forward we have nothing, the midfield is slow to move it up and none of them take marks, it's a liability on Subi which is the longest grounnd coast to coast

To me Simpson is obviously thinking about the future. We ain't going to win it this year, so why be such a Nazi about the results?

Firstly, Cox is retiring soon so his plan is to bring another ruck-man up to speed. I don't have a problem with that.

And secondly, I have a feeling players like Priddis have a strong backing in the club, and are basically untouchable. Simpson's plan is to expose them, so that he generates enough support within the club - and from the public - to start making some big changes in personnel.

I know I'm talking a little crazy, but with a conservative club like ours, you have to think a little bit outside the square to get what you want.

I have no doubt the game plan still has significant work to be done on. Simpson needs to understand the strength and weakness of the list, then he can really start to implement a system, and hit the draft and trade with player types in mind.

Still, gameplan or not doesn't cause you to kick yourself out of games week after week. He must be tearing his hair out at that.

It's going to take 3/4 of the season for Simpson to find out who is going to be able to follow his game plan but at the same time we need to be still competitive so he has tweek slightly how we played under Woosha but as we can all see it's not going to cut it to be a top team. What we are seeing right now is not how we will be playing this time next year it just going to take time which will frustrate the shit out of all of us, but if you are a royal follower it will be worth the wait.

I noticed the 2 on 1 contests we chose to kick to and how many of these where the Docker man easily outbodied our boys to take the mark or bring the ball to ground, we were well beaten in the strength and keeping your feet stakes. Why Cox and Nik Nat couldn't clunk easy marks like Sandi was disappointing I mean we are playing with 3 rucks, tell me again why would that be and what is the point when it is the little skilled quick men that have been getting the better of us since the late 90's ffs

Must say my man crush on Rosa is strengthening, not sure how much he had but he went in hard, seemed to tackle like a boss and didn't panic. As for the gameplan, I don't think Simpson really plays to the players strengths yet or knows what they are.

As for the public "we wont drop nicnat" (paraphrase) statement, what a load of rubbish, you should back your players against criticism but to name someone untouchable is a kick in the guts for someone like a Sinclair, or anyone for that matter who's expected to try their guts out in the 2's over an underperformer who's 'looking for fitness' at AFL level. Also, gives away some silly frees.

Whatever the game plan was, we are not:
1. defending well! We are always 20 metres from the opposition player.
2. structured in moving the ball up. We need some set play!
We can't play the Hawthorn style well with the current playing group!!!!!

Gee. You could make Hitler seem like mother Theresa with that logic

Coaches have a lot to answer for at the moment.

So far this year we have achieved the lowest score in west coast history, went 4 quarters without a goal between the last 3 qtrs against Geelong and then the first qtr against port. We have today gone close to our lowest score in derby history...if not our actual lowest score.

We are playing a style which doesn't suit our strengths.
  • Flood back and defend....ie why we don't have big scores kicked against us. Fine, that's well and good but there is an opportunity cost of doing this.
  • Counter attack using benell and Sheppard and all the others that have dropped back.
  • Counter attack style means Kennedy, darling etc are nowhere to be seen. They aren't playing deep. Too far up the ground.
  • With our forwards so high up the ground we aren't getting marks inside 50....bottom 4 in the league for this which is just astounding
  • Inside 50 stats are just so low. Only around 30 today. Ain't gonna win games by doing that.
  • All our shots on goal are from snaps, on the run etc because its counter attacking. We don't hit up our forwards on the lead. Why play like this when we have so many good tall forwards? Just doesn't make sense. Teams would kill for our forward line.
  • Conversion of goals is due to the gameplan, not bad set kicking. Our set shots aren't that bad. But we don't have many because we are bottom 4 for marks inside 50. Need easier shots on goal, rather than the inefficient opportunities we currently get.
  • Why play three ruckmen when you play a counter attacking style. You need runners.
  • Bottom 4 for clearances. Shocking set ups. Don Pyke's area and he has been out of the game for 10yrs...kind of tells.
Anyways...Simpson needs a chance. I'm not liking it because it needs a dominant midfield and we don't have one, so it's risky. Hopefully it all clicks and we start dominating teams but the gameplan isn't great at the moment.

Ross started the same way at Freo and it all kind of clicked towards the end of his first season so lets hope the same happens to us.

He can only work with the cattle he has for now, and with the growing pains of being a new coach he's still finding out what works and what doesn't.

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it here, he's trying to work HIS gameplan with WOOSHAS plodder players, give him time to cut the dead wood and bring in his own players before I start seriously querying the coach

It's always hard for a supporter to know what the game plan is because more often than not, the players don't execute it

Its going to take most of the year for us to start playing the way Simpson wants us too. He should have an idea by then who he wants to keep around too. Just remember it took Freo a while to adapt to Lyon. They were getting flogged in the beginning.

All I want is us to be a mighty club again. We are finished, I will take exception to anyone saying we are the most successful club in the league. Hawthorn then Geelong are the best clubs in the league. Nothing will change that for now. I cant believe people want to see GEE or HAW win over fremantle. In my opinion they are not true fans and have no idea. We are now mediocre.

How to fix it?
I leave that to the adminstration and then the coaching staff. I have no answers, I just go to the game and drink my sorrows. I cant believe we've slipped this far. Whats our average finishing position since our flag? 12th? we suck
