Who should our Sub be and why...

I reckon a decent idea would be to play Graham/Derricx as a sub.
Then late in the third quarter when the opposition ruckmen are getting fatiged bring the sub onto the ground. Our fresh ruckmen should be able to run the legs off the opposition ruckmen and jump all over him in ruck contests. Have Vickery pinch hit in the ruck, rotate on the bench and play up forward.

Have to be a running HB/mid type. Perhaps Houli or Connors. Maybe even Foley early on to ease him into the game again?

Early on, I think most clubs will go with a pseudo-KPP who can pinch hit in the ruck. So we may use Post (as we did at the end of last year), or else Vickery or Derickx.

Then I'd suspect we will use the sub to bring in a fresh mid, allowing us to get away with playing a young kid or slightly underdone player (eg. Conca/Foley).

Connors/Houli are to valuable to be used as a sub. You want your good ball users on the ground for the majority of the game.

Depends a lot on Rucks in my opinion. If Vickory plays up forward and can be used as a back up ruck the the need for a Ruck as a sub isn't great especially if we can play both Derickx and Graham.

Someone like Morton is Ideal IMO, can play both fwd and mid... but at this stage is too important not to start i the first 18.

Kingy also ... can play back, forward and in the middle.

Also have to remember that the rotations well be less so the mids will have to worker harder for longer. It might be a good way to ease a young mid into the side like Conca....

Will be interesting what clubs do.....

Its a shit rule in my opinion. Its unfortunate for the sub player that they no longer can participate fully in an individual game. This rule infuriates me.
Teams arnt going to stop interchanging which is why this rule was brought in in the first place.

They afl should have opted for a cap on interchanges instead.

Imagine being the sub at any level of football, it would be horrible.

it has to be a mid.

if the other team subs in a mid and our sub is a kpp, we'll be one player down in midfield rotations, that makes a difference.

Yeah, I'm not sold on the sub concept at all...
Adding complexity to the game in my view, there will be times when teams will pull a tactical substitution reasonably early and not long after that cop an injury.

End result will be a fit (though a little tired) player will be cooling his heels on the bench but will not be able to get back on & the remainnig 20 players will need to slog it out.

Too cute for me this particular 'new' rule...

I just find it funny that they increased the size of the interchange bench and then wonder why the amount of rotations increased. Now they are actually reducing the interchange bench with out reducing the 22.

That depends on how they structure their rucking duties and bench.

If a club goes with a mid as a sub that means they will be playing with two ruckmen or at least one true ruck and one back up so essentially they will be down a midfielder in their rotation.

If we ruck a bloke for 3 quarters and have 3 mids of the bench and then sub our ruckman with Vickery taking the occasional hit out here and there there will essentially be no difference to our midfield rotation than there was last year.

It's a b/s rule that's for sure.
