1. They play on and play well. Crows go deep into September looks like a masterstroke by the club.

2. They play on and play badly/injured. Crows miss the finals but get games into the younger players for the second half of the season.

3. They do not play on. Crows miss the finals and get games into their younger players.

It should be noted that the Crows went deep into the draft and so signing on the Veterans did not compromise list recruitment as far as I can see. I am happy to be told otherwise.

As we all know 2 happened but my own thought is "Hell, it was worth a roll of the dice." 10 games of development lost on our younger players for what everyone thought was a red hot go at the top 4 at the end of last year. I honestly cannot see 10 games being the difference between our younger players making it or not.

I think the anger is more to do with our expectations not being met as opposed to bad decision making by the club.

Very fair assessment imo. All the critics come out with the benefit of hindsight but I think you're right.

I would have liked them to make calls on Burton and Hentschel though, but I'm not complaining. We could have delisted all of them ad got pick 217 in the draft but that wouldn't have bought much. ;)

Well we might have picked up Barlow or Podsially or the many other good rookies left in draft that have played games already this year with a real future

Barlow and Podsiadly are extreme outliers. Not even there own clubs expected the kinds of returns they have produced. And even then, let's not forget that Pods only has maximum 4 years of service to give. And even then, it seems unlikely considering how he has struggled at the tail end of this season already. In addition, I doubt they were even on our recruitment list or that Ogilvie & co were watching much VFL.

We went into the rookie draft with a very short list of names and then passed on our last pick, so those players were most likely never a chance of getting in a Crows guernsey. In any case, we have gone quite deep in every Rendell draft and have set ourselves up very well. For the record I was in favour of getting rid of Burton & Hentschel, so as to keep Gallman & Kite. Egg on my face. In retrospect it was probably best to try to roll the dice on Burton and Hentschel to see if they could return to fitness considering their talent and professionalism are far and away better than would have been on offer late in the draft.

Your points are correct re out of box and who on list etc but my point is that these type of players are there and after all we have done well with our low draft and rookies in past even last 2 years .
Plus think of the $ it would have freed as well .

Yes we have done well late in the draft, but would we have continued to have such success if we mined that pool any deeper? I am sceptical.

I wouldn't say anger is due to simply failed expectations.

Performances lacking in intensity and commitment - including some of the veterans at times - are what frustated/angered me the most.

A lack of willingness to embrace change - which some would argue is manifest in playing on with ALL the guys who had touch decisions over their heads - is what also frustrates many, myself included.

Falling so far short of the preceived expectations of those running the club - who chose to keep on all the veterans - indicating the need for a gross reality check has also frustrated many.

The OP is certainly one way to look at it, and I'll admit has some merit, but to say the 'anger' is due to failed expectations is a tad simplistic.

1. Living in fairy land where blokes in their mid 30s with bad knees actually improve.

or

2. Having the guts to get rid of players that are passed it.
