Minor gripe if you will, but it still grates my ears a bit when commentators refer to us as 'The West Coast' instead of 'West Coast.' Like 'the West Coast are up by four goals.' Hear it so often now, but it still sounds wrong to me. I always refer to us as just 'West Coast' without the 'the', unless one might formally be referring to 'the West Coast Eagles'. Same with the Gold Coast. It's like saying 'the Collingwood.' No one says that unless they're referring to 'THE Collingwood Magpies.' I can see how it could confuse some, as they might think of the West Coast as referring to all of WA. On that note it's usually tourists who talk about 'travelling to the West Coast', whereas Aussies usually say WA, unless one is talking of specifically driving down the coast. I guess there's no technical right or wrong, but it just isn't something I hear supporters or people in WA usually say.

I think it’s the difference between a location (the north, the south, the coast, the valley etc) and a specific place name (Fremantle, Collingwood etc).

‘Gold Coast’ is a funny one...but generally you’d say ‘I’m heading to the gold coast’ if you were driving that way.

So yeah..

It sounds annoying because it's poor English, horrible use of the English language in fact.

It sounds wrong because many people have the nuances and rules of the English language ingrained in them through childhood whether they understand why or not.

They also do it to GWS
