Do you wear it? I do. I did a stint in northern China over their winter, it's obligatory with -10 degree temperatures. On coming back to Melbourne I wore it again during very cold days and can't believe I never did before, it really makes a difference. (I'm talking about leggings/stockings/long johns)

It's a problem when you're in and out of cold/warm environments but otherwise for outdoors it's great.

I have 2 pairs - the camping store variety and a thicker more wooly pair from ching chong.

I'm a big advocate of the thermals :thumbsu: I've just got into regularly using long-sleeve thermal shirts and pants this winter. I have two pairs of stretchy merino wool ones, and they go great under pyjamas (save you from having to use the electric blanket), and I've tried them a few times on nights out under my regular clothes, and they're a real lifesaver there as well. Beanies are still the first warming accessory I go for in the cold (I've pretty much lived in a few different beanies over the past couple of months), but if the temperature dips under 8-9 degrees, thermals are a must too IMO.

I agree, once thermal never go nermal (normal).

Chicks have their winter stockings so why shouldn't guys? The top I'm not overly concerned about, we're used to rugging up the top half with multiple layers, but the bottom is often neglected. It doesn't need to be.

In Tassie, wearing thermals in winter is pretty much a necessity. I wear them under my shirt/tie every day for work.

I also wear plenty of long sleeve merino thermals (over 2 base layer thermals) as 'normal' tops with jeans in winter - toasty!

In fact, right now I am tramping around the house in my thermals. I'm tossing up whether to put on my pyjamas or to just wear them to bed.

You're right volcboy, long sleeve merino thermals are great when it gets really cold.

I wear this stuff at home a lot:

If you wear them to work though (in a building with ample heating) wouldn't you get too hot? One of my brothers wears them a lot but he works outdoors. I have only worn them during a skiing trip to Mt. Hotham once and even then I was cooking so I had to take them off. Must be hot-blooded.

Really depends on which ones you've got I think. Even though mine are 100% merino wool, they're fairly breathable, keeping you warm without making you too hot, if that makes sense. I keep mine on under clothes when I go running in the morning (after wearing them under pyjamas the night before), and I don't sweat any more than I usually would doing that (and I'm someone who generally sweats pretty easily). Then again, I'm usually running in sub-5 degree temperatures in the Adelaide Hills, so I'm probably barely going to raise a sweat no matter what I'm wearing :p

lol @ this thread being full of people from SA and Victoria.

One of the best things about this site is it regularly reminds me how much I hate Melbourne winters.

I'd rather Victorian winters than Queensland summers. I don't mind cold weather at all when it is sunny. It's only when it's dreary and overcast I don't like it.

I wore thermal underwear when I was living in Moscow. Haven't done so in Australia.

I don't mind when it's just straight cold, but when it's windy and rainy, that's when it gets annoying. There seems to be more wind and rain here in Adelaide over the last couple of years than ever before. I really don't remember winters here being as long and all-round shitty as they are now (along with the lack of a decent summer) when I was growing up.

Love my thermals. Can't wear the top though, i get far too hot. Just having the bottoms on keeps me nice and warm. Only do it a few times a year though.

Wouldn't all that heat irate the anus with sweat? The anus can be very sensitive with sweat around it, needs to be cool at all times if possible.

Bought them for a ski trip a few years back and have worn them regularly ever since. Will wear them tonight to a house party cause its f****** cold and sleeping out

You def needed it at the footy esp at the G. Otherwise cold derusis kicks in and u r off 2 toilet twice per match.
