I still don't get the "throwing the ball on a hunch" part.
It means he felt a disturbance in his loins, a disturbance that gave him absolute assurance that said bowling change would be rewarded with a wicket.
 
Oh! Now it makes more sense. I didn't realise he was the captain and put the part timer on.

I thought it was catching the ball then on a hunch throwing it. Confused as hell.
