As a melbourne supporter I just wanted to say that I, for one, still feel annoyed that we lost Thommo so cheaply. He double the player that Moloney is, in my eyes and was my favourite player before he shafted us. He will be one of your premier midfielders for years to come and you should be so happy to have him. With Riccuito, Goodwin and Thompson in the middle that is a very strong midfield .I have snapped him up in my dreamteam and i am sure he will be a great acquisition.
Would you prefer Moloney or Thompson in your line-up? Moloney is obviously a better kick but I think Thommo is a better overhead mark and an increased ability to kick goals and better around the packs. The loss of tackling quality with thommos departure has not been as heavy as expected with the likes of Mclean and Sylvia more than filling this void, with Mclean around the top 10 in the league for tackles. Sylvia, however is probably the best tackler I have seen by anyone at any level, but seems out of sorts at the moment. I am quietly confident that we will see him reflect his high prospects.
I hope we will see these young blokes take on each other, later in the year, and hopefully in the finals....at the MCG :p
If you can emulate your form like against the Saints you will do well in the finals.

Isnt it an absolute joke that an incompetent club (like melbourne) with a pis$ weak spirit within the group can finish last or second to last every second yr and pick up talent like sylvia or Mclean. Imo melbourne are just as bad as st.kilda.

Anyway, if anything we overpaid you for what thommo had actually put on the board, he was injured just about every season and was lucky to get through half a season. You were stupid to trade it for moloney though, although he is a fine but limited player. Thommo has his limits too and is more hard working than anything, but has the hardness we badly needed and a few more like him wouldn’t go astray. To sum up, Thommo and moloney are both fine but different players. Oh and I don’t think Melbourne are a genuine premiership contender, you needed a new FB asap and a couple of harder in and under types. You ineptness over the yrs means you have a bright next 3-4yrs though.

You better listen to Jack too. He knows what he's talking about. Right Jack?

I haven't seen a lot of Moloney, but every time I do see him I am impressed. I'm not prepared to say who is better because I don't know, but both are quality players.

Thompson has been great for us so far.

Has anyone else noticed the high number of clangers that Thompson always seems to be credited with? In the St Kilda game he finished the game with 8 kicks - 7 clangers and 1 goal.

I think it shows how deceptive stats can be sometimes. He is a good kick (apart from his shots on goal against Carlton) but many of those clangers are quick kicks from clearances, or where he receives the ball and is forced to kick quickly to position up forward. He could tidy up a bit but he's no where near as bad as his recent clanger stats suggest.

I didn’t have the greatest of appreciation for Scott Thompson and his ability to play the game of football, I was unjustly critical of what we gave up for him (pick 12?), but now it looks like a steal and a very, very big bargain pick up (sorry Dees fans). Tyson Stenglein is still a better player (just) but this time next season Scott Thompson will almost be ready for supporters to be calling for him name at the AA table, no disrespect to Tyson but I very much doubt that he would be considered for AA selection.

LOL, Jack epitomizes the average idiot on most big footy forums, he knows ******** all about anything but still loves to tell everyone he has a ‘red hot tip’ but its only talking dribble or ill informed propaganda.

I think the reason is that they classify a free kick against as a clanger. So against the Saints he had something like 4 frees against, so therefore he would have only had 3 disposal clangers.

Similarly on the weekend, he had 4 frees against but only 6 clangers, so only 2 disposal clangers out of 26 touches is a good return.

I'd say he has surpassed Stinger as a player. Definitely more attacking than Stinger and consistently picks up more disposals than Stinger did for us, and kicks a lot more goals than Stinger did. Without looking at the stats, I daresay he puts more pressure on the opposition midfielders as well in regards to tackling and shepherding etc. Thommo is averaging 4 tackles a game this year and we all agree his second and thrid efforts are second to none. The only thing Stinger does better than Thompson is directly nullifying an opposition player, which since Shirley has stepped up this year is a non issue.

EDIT - also I think it's Thommo's 50th game this weekend so hopefully we can put in a good one for him.

I think Thompson is the best trade AFC has done for a long long time. If he can stay fit I think he will be amongst the top 5 midfielders in the AFL by next season.

Go on ,say what you really mean :p

If you had have seen him play for Melbourne over the last couple of years, you would have wet youself, as I did, when word got out he was interested in signing with Adelaide. Currently our second best draft of all time, who knows in time it could be our best.

I .

Those stats were garbage. At least three of his poessions went to our advantage and another couple were contested, ie smothered or to a pack.

Thomsons kicking is pretty good. His wrong foot kicking is awesome.

He's all class, our Scotty Thompson. An absolute gun in the making and bargain for pick 12 IMO. He could end up being the most significant pick up in our short history if he goes on to achieve his potential. Could well end up captain of the AFC in a few years when Roo gives it away and hopefully he plays 200+ games.

While I like Moloney as a good, tough, in and under player with a nice long kick, I dont think he is nearly as pollished as Thomo. IMO we did extremely well on that trade and Melbourne did very well to replace Thomo with a very good player in his own right.

Like I said, a free against is counted as a clanger, hence his high clanger count.

I do ‘Love’ as you so eloquently put it Jack…only problem is that I hate you (well not hate but disapprove of some of your idiotic comments and the flatulence you talk about).

Stinger and Thommo are just different players. I would have loved to have seen Stinger to play not just as a tagger/run with player but just as a regular midfielder.

Having said that Stinger is a tagger and Thommo is a playmaker and it is easier to fill a tagger shoes than it is a playmaker and Adelaide needed another play maker which Thommo has done nicely.

I would say one area he could improve on is the stupid frees he gives away at times. I know that at times when you go in hard and eager you expect to take some of the good with the bad, but at times some of the frees he gives away are just silly.

But very happy to have him in our team. Would have been good if we could have kept Stinger as well.

Oh well.

Ps. Outback Jack for PM

Edit. PPS Slappy sorry for the 6 - 0 thumping, however your canaries did well to keep in touch until the last game of the season

agree. quite often he holds onto the tackle too long but i reckon he is easily better than stinger.

disagree,

Jack is a below average idiot, who 'pretends' he is deliberately being obtuse to disguise the fact that he has nothing to offer.
