Awesome article for AFC supporters in this morning Advertiser regarding Thompson and hinting at long term career with the AFC. I am glad he is settling in really well there. He says that him Reilly and Kenny Mac are the future leaders of the club.

Couldn't agree more, hopefully it means he wont want to go to port after his contract expires.

i didnt read it really carefully but i think it is a misquote. Wasnt it something along the lines of, 'i want to be in the leadership grp' and then the headline is 'i want to be next captain' thats how i read it. I'd put him in over reilly, as long as he manages to stay fit for a yr or two

Does anyone really genuinely believe Thompson WONT be the next captain? Strong, tough and skillful and takes no prisoners - I will be very surprised if in 2008 he doesnt take over from the Roo - Reilly, Stiffy etc to be part of the leadership group?

In November 2004 when the Adelaide Football Club traded for Scott Thompson I had my reservations about his ability and his mindset towards the AFC, fast forward to May 2005 and with in 6 months I have changed my attitude towards him.

Firstly his ability to play the game, he is a much better player than I gave him credit for but regarding his mindset I would still like to question his attitude towards the club, only time will change that somewhere between 2 and 3 years service, not that he has said or done anything inappropriate or dubious that could be misconstrued as bring the game or club into disrepute but time is something that I want to keep and then change my mind and opinion about him being captain, lets see him play for 90 - 100 odd games and if he keeps his focus and hard at it approach to the ball then yes IMO he can be considered the next captain of the Adelaide Football Club.

IMO it will be a toss up between Stiffy and Thommo to be the next AFC Captain with Hudson a smokie. Kenny should never be given the captaincy, too much of an introvert. I think the captain has to be a physical ( a little mongrel ) player.

I reckon Thommo by a neck, with Stiffy and Huddo getting the VC's.

Read it again.

From the article:

"Roo will be around for another couple of years yet. Hopefully, in the next few years I can stand up and get that leadership role."

That's pretty definite.

well i said i didnt read it carefully, but one word it could of been a leadership role, i just reckon they ask the poor bloke questions, get the answer they want and then come up with a big heading. He didnt say it how the title said it

Personally I have no reason to doubt his committment and intentions for the AFC. My reasoning is that he chose to come here. It's not like when someone gets drafted they have no choice. He did have the choice. What player leaves a club that wants desperately to keep them to move to a club they don't want to go to? It just doesn't happen.

Whether that's what he meant or not I think it's fair to assume he would love to be captain one day. Which player wouldn't?

Aren't we throwing in the captaincy as a sweetener when we lure Pav back at the end of next year? ;)

Haven't the PAPs proven that you shouldn't promise someone the captaincy?

hentschel i reckon, too shy. Thommo is the obvious choice, Reilly is too weird for my liking. Has no physical element either. Wouldnt pick Kenny either. Slot them in for supporting roles instead.

agree with most of this.........jury still out on Huddo though from a leadership perspective.

Are you referring to Carr or Tredrea? They promise it to any bloke who's got all his teeth, and can string more than a couple of words together down there :D

Different situations anyway. If we were a chance to get Pav I wouldn't be against using the captaincy as extra incentive. At the same time from what we've seen of Thommo so far he could also become an outstanding candidate.

People get employed and work under duress all the time and work for cooperation’s that they may not necessarily agree and accept their corporate principals, that could quite easily be Scott Thompson.

Footballers are no different we don’t know all of the contractual situations that went on between Scott Thompson and the Adelaide Football Club, he came home to be closer to family and friends. As a Port Magpies Junior the perception he would have had about the AFC would not have been good (Re: his anti crows comment) but he would have matured and changed his outlook, my point is I want his action to make a lasting impression on me not his words from a few years ago.

Hate to change the topic, but is anyone else rapt with the levels of aggression we have shown so far this year?? With Thommo, Stiffy, Mattner, Thorney, Roo and Huddo showing some real raw aggression it's like all my xmases have come at once. It's a refreshing change from the Gary Ayres reign.
