Started this because I didn't actually see a proper *Round 1* Thread.

Anyways my quick thoughts are
1. Medhurst good trade thus far and its early days but positive stuff.
2. Was pleased that Rocca looks like he's learnt how to mark again so I think thats a positive.
3. Displayed that at least psychologically we are unbeaten. In terms of some teams when down like that in the 4th would just give up, we never did so thats pretty crucial. But we shouldn't have been there anyways....

Negatives:
1. Despite a few posts I read I felt Scotty Pendelbury looked really lost out there on that match which is a shame cos i love the kid.
2. Daisy only seemed to step up towards the end when the rest of the team did likewise.
3. Fraser....on the ground but you wouldn't know it.

All up with people like Buckley and Didak to return as well as a win under the belt I'd say funny as it sound to finish where the Tiger's finished last year is a firm possbility.

Negatives:
1. Despite a few posts I read I felt Scotty Pendelbury looked really lost out there on that match which is a shame cos i love the kid.
I thought he showed flashes of brilliance. Didn't think he looked lost at all. He looked like he had plenty of time when he got the ball and very DalSanto-ish at times. With all the hype around the kid, we have to remember its only his 10th game for the club. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.
2. Daisy only seemed to step up towards the end when the rest of the team did likewise.
Daisy showed he's not just capable of the flashy stuff, 20 possessions and a goal coming from a great tackle. Thats a pretty handy game. The goal in fact, was the first of the seven last quarter goals and lifted the whole team.
3. Fraser....on the ground but you wouldn't know it.
Frase had a very poor 3 quarters but then stepped up for a huge last quarter.

Your negative points 1 & 2 should definitely be in the positives column.

Garry Lyon said it when I was in the carpark..."The Pies could not have played any worse today, and they won! So it is only up from here on"

Good thinking :p

Pros:
Anthony Rocca - Didn't need to kick one single goal for us to get over the Roos, however, if he wasn't there, we wouldn't have one. Pebbles was simply, fantastic in providing the contest, and in the end pulled off 4 contested marks.

Harry O'Brien - This kid will never lose his feet in a contest, and he adds tremendous depth to our backline. Some were suprised he was in the side, but he was very good. Couple of turnovers, who didn't though

Tarkyn Lockyer - Great start to the season

Simon Prestigiacomo's goal assist - Possibly the greatest Prestigiacomo highlight in his career was his effort on the wing, and not only the effort, but to win front position, tap the ball inside the boundary line, give it off, and set up a goal to Maxwell, which was inspiring.

Cons:
Guy Richards - Still very ordinary, however, of his hitouts, 38% were to advantage.

Skills - Happened to both sides, but it was the worst game up until 3-quarter time. The side had 61 clangers...that is huugge.

Travis Cloke - Still has the worst kick in the side you could say, despite kicking a freakish goal, likely to be a GOTW nominee.

Harry got himself out of trouble a few times, it looked great.

Clokes goal was very freakish.

When Benny Johnno was lining up for that snap goal, the guy next to me said to his son, this could go anywhere! It went straight through the middle :thumbsu:

Pros:
The youngins led the charge all day I feel. I don't think Pendles looked lost at all, he did a lot of good things, and yes some silly things to but he has only played a handful of games, so the signs are positive. Except that kick at goal. :D But he is a pretty decent kick in general field of play, just gotta work on his set shot.
Daisy played well, he worked hard all game but yeh he did really lift his game in the last quarter, but so did everyone else. So doesn't matter. Good to see his continued on from last year.
Heater was sensational, which is what we've come to expect from him. Although he did give away a lot of free kicks, but he still wins a lot of footy and he is great under pressure.
And I agree with Lonie, Harry was brilliant, he just moves in and out of traffic so easily. Will become a very good player for us.
Rhyce I felt played a great game, he still makes a few mistakes but I love his will and determination, his heart can never be questioned, he'll always give you 110%.
We played crap and still won.

Cons:
Guy Richards
Travis didn't step up as much as I thought he would... but it is only round 1, won't be too harsh.
Guy Richards

But basically, we haven't won a round 1 game since 1847, so to come away with that win, was great.

I am suprised at some of the negativety regarding pendles. I get the impression peoples expectations for him are very hig this season. He is a skinny kid in his second year and has not played the game nearly as much as other youngsters his age. He made a few mistakes but I thought he was not to bad.

2 main positives for me where thomas. He looks like he is not going to suffer the dreaded 2nd year blues. I reckon he has gone forward in his development.

The other was heater. Apart from stuffing up the goal in the 3rd he was sensational. Some people(not our supporters) criticise him for playing loose but unlike many others who play his role he actually runs back with courage time and time again and when he gets the footy he goes forward at every chance and takes risks. He is set to be a star of the game for the next 6 or 7 years.

Just a special mention for Licuria, i'll admit my mind started to fade away closer to the end of 3rd Quarter in direct relation to how many Scotch's I'd had but....didn't Licca grab 20+ disposals and was our major ball winner for a significant proportion of the game?

Why are people across other threads bagging him so, based on disposals i'd say it was one of his more prolific games.

Bottle up that last quarter and we'll be ok. The skills and decision making in the first 3 qtrs were rubbish, but there were elements of a decent setup trying to burst through, and low and behold, it came out in the last term. It's just going to be a case of getting the setup/gameplan/mentality to occur more often than not, preferably all the time, and the results will go our way. The major concern, like others have said, is in the ruck, coz ideally we'd like to keep Josh away from most of the work. Stretch needs to find something.

There's nothing wrong with O'Bree, Lockyer and Licca per se... except we have so damn many of them... need some quality line breakers

good to rocca making consistant 2nd efforts and trying to make leads. looked much fitter, hope it lasts!
im surprised licca is getting bagged as i thought his was a steadying influence that stopped us getting totally blown away though maybe the roos just werent good enough to blow us away
medhurst kind interesting start to his black and white career. is prepared to have a red hot crack and go the contest which we need though some questionable decision making
forward line structure is definitely in experimental mode
overall i enjoyed the game, the ones where we claw our way back and snatch a win are the most enjoyable

Another con was Heaters delivery. What was it, 13 clangers?? Of the team total of 61 that is huge. Got a heap of ball but a massive percentage were turnovers. Needs to get his delivery as good as his ball winning skill.

Correct JimmyClement#8, our decision making was disgraceful. Strathmore Under 10's would make better decisions with the footy than we did during the first three quarters.

Hope this is just a one off, but Travis Cloke had an absolute shocker. Continually led to the wrong spots, wasn't prepared to push up the ground to receive the second long possession out of defence. One lead is not enough, CHF need to lead continually and present!

Could we have hugged the boundary line any more!

Lonie - still can't tackle (no stats please) give me stats on how many he misses and how he just watches blokes waltz passed him. He needs to get into the right spots to receive the footy. I'll take into account he had a run with roll with Wells, but Wells isn't a footballers assh*ole and is scared of his own shadow. Should of made Wells accountable for him, by getting on the end of the footy more often.

Richards and Fraser - Weak as ***** pretty much sums up their combined efforts

Ok, they were the negative, the postives!

Harry O'Brien - Was super! His ability to win contested footy in crowded contests was excellent. Happened at least four or five times and really launched our attack from defence (pity we kicked it to our players who were lined up around the boundary.

Tarkyn Lockyer - No secret that i'm not his biggest fan, but he was superb in the final stanza. Leg speed could be back and foot skills were back to his best. Mick, just don't put him in the back pocket on dangerous forwards.

Paul Medhurst - Every forward line needs a cheat and Medhurst could become ours. A cheat in the sense that he is a smart footballer, and by hanging out he is able to lose his opponent near the goals. Led well up the ground and i'm sure Mick got stuck into him about that brain explosion, where he thought he'd kick a torp 90m out from goal.

Yeah as everyone else has said( as its damn pretty obvious) first 3 quarters was shocking. Skills obviously are down, adjusting to the game pace, decision making, getting confidence to back themselves and the first time everyone played a game together...all factors that played a role in our crap first quarter. I think yes that was probably the worst we could have played so we can only get better, as that is what happened last year in rnd 1, ordinary game against adelaide then got it right the following week.

Id like Guy Richards to play a few more games, even if he was so woeful, he isn't going to get much better by sitting in the 2s. And we need fraser in the forward line to mix it up. Pendlebury and Cloke will only improve.

I think we have nothing to lose next week as i dont expect anyone to back us against the eagles. The pressure will be more on the eagles to win than us. So I'm looking forward to our game!!!

FFS first Scotland becoming one of the premier accumulators in the league now Cameron Cloke becomes a decent ruckman overnight?

Who the feck is calling these shots?

Positives

Rocca was creating a massive contest for us up forward. He was an option You can also add Medhurst into this point, he created options too.

Tarks used HIS positives and created a lot of plays for us, was very useful throughout the game, didnt let his negatives be exposed.

If Clement plays every week like he did in this game, he will win the Brownlow. Performances like that do not go unnoticed by umpires, easily BOG.

The kids did their bit, Thomas kicked an important goal in the last, through his trademark play of always chasing and putting 100% into keeping the contest in our forward line and Pendles wasnt consistent but its only RD 1, although he showed he will star for us this year.

The presence of Burns, Licuria, O'Bree and Johnson ect. was very important. They didnt play their best games but they are mature bodies out on the field and that in itself gives the youngsters more confidence to have a run and try creating something.

Negatives

I didnt watch enough of the game to see negatives.

But we have a team full of booming kicks. We have to start using this to our advantage in our game plans/structures.
Kick long into the forward line.
Let the likes of Cloke, Rocca, Buckley contest one on one.
There are the Medhursts, Licuria's, Burns's, Didaks and Thomas's who will get the crumbs.

I also really dislike all this play near the boundary line. Straight down the corridor!! Thats what I was taught in junior footy. Its the most effective way to go!

Not very often you say something silly, but travis being worst kick in our side is a very silly comment!!!

Played very bad in the first 3 quaters but hey, its round 1 i think we will start slow this year, still have didak and bucks to come back. DROP RICHARDS off the list now and promote a rookie because he is just ****! Bryan to come in next week!

Positives!

One of the best games Rocca has played in recent memory. Even though he didnt hurt on the scoreboard, what he did do is provide us with a target. He crashed into packs a number of times yesterday. Thats what he should always do. He should run right through defenders. Play like J.Brown plays!!!

Scotty Burns last quarter was absolutely sensational. His desperation and attack on the ball was excellent. Thomas continued to work hard and what I like most about him are his 2nd and 3rd efforts. Medhurst also looked dangerous aswell, could become a suprise packet for us.

Negatives!

The first three quarters, the team as a whole was simply terrible. If we serve out that crap, we will not win another game. Way too many handpasses, too many short kicks, too many players missing targets. We were simply pathetic. Always picking the wrong option. Always putting players in unnecessary situations. How many times would we handpass to a player under pressure?

Another thing, When we come off half-back, how many times would a player mark it and have a look and there was nothing to kick to. We were too stationary. We need players to lead into space..... provide an option for f*cks sake!

Dont get me started on that "Blonk" of a unit in Guy Richards. Give him another 2 games and if we see no improvement, delist him immediately.
