The GOAT Spur and certainly one of the top 10 greatest players of all time.
Bit of a shock, all talk in recent weeks suggested he would play on.

#ThanksTimmy

All Class Timmy. It's been a pleasure watching the Big Fundamental. Hope it's not the last we see of him, would love to see him stay involved in the game in some way. Seems unlikely though.

Kobe and Duncan retire in the same season. Crazy stuff.

A true legend, future HOF, icon, role model of the game of basketball. What TD has done for basketball has been nothing short of exceptional.

One of the greatest ever.

Sad to see him retire. Was actually looking over his career statistics the other day - it is amazing how productive he was right off the bat averaging like 21 ppg, 12 reb, 2.5 blks right away

This feels like when you have a relative that's been ill for a long time, but it's still such a shock when they finally pass away. I think next season will feel a bit hollow for me. He's not just a player that plays for my team; he is my team. He epitomizes that whole franchise. I started watching NBA during the 90's because of basketball cards, but I didn't really get into it until Timmy entered the league. I've been along for the journey with him and it's been great.

Thank you, Tim Duncan.

Was All-NBA 1st team in his rookie season. He also made all nba 2nd team defensive in his rookie season.

Insane.

Great player and sad to see the day come. Only Dirk, Pierce and KG remain as early millennium to 2010 onward stars now. Witnessing a major generational shift in the league.

Honestly am in awe of his longevity. Was a guy I watched in 2010/2011 and honestly doubted that his body would give him any more years. Turned out to be wrong and his play in the following seasons in some big playoff series was phenomenal. Was so glad to see him get a 5th ring in 2014 after the collapse in 2013 where he was a huge factor in the finals.

Doubt we'll see any player match that winning consistency again.

New it was coming sooner rather than later.. doesn't make it any easier.

They don't make them like TD anymore.

Only player in NBA history to win a ring in 3 different decades.

Typical Timmy... Retired at exactly the correct time imo... & did it in typically Timmy (& Spurs) fashion.

Will miss ya big fundamental.

Now, how do we get a #1 draft pick to obtain our next Admiral/Timmy?

I think I'm pretty fortunate to have chosen the Spurs to support way back in 91/92. I remember following David Robinson and being enamoured by his focus on the community and character. I also remember a long string of very-good regular seasons only to be beaten in the playoffs (especially the MJ retirement years) thinking that "nice guys finish last" was also gonna always apply to the NBA.

Then I remember watching and following this young kid coming through Wake Forest, who could've entered the draft 1 or 2 years earlier and still been the top pick, but who spoke about wanting to keep developing, including adding more ball handling to his game as a senior.

The 96-97 season is nothing but amazing luck for the franchise. We had a no-name GM who also became coach mid-season. We had longterm injuries to our 2 best players, another starter and our 6th man, and we gave the reigns to a future HoFer on his last legs who wasnt gonna win you games. There was definitely a decision along the way to tank that season, but this was from an organisation who hadnt missed the playoffs since David Robinson played his first game and for whom the balls (in more ways than one) just happened to fall into place.

What happened next has been a joy to watch (most of the time - if not for the multiple other times we got so close only to be pipped right at the end) and I dont think we will ever see a player like him (though very glad its Kawhi taking the reigns).

Does anyone remember when some of the media were making the argument that the spurs should draft van horn over duncan? I think the reasoning was that Duncan was a center and he played the same position as Robinson who was not far removed from his mvp campaign. Van Horn was no slouch, but Duncan was billed as as a superstar after his first season of college.

I don't remember that, but it does make sense. At worst though Spurs draft Duncan and he could have basically been traded for any player not named Shaq he was that well regarded.

There's always some idiot analyst trying to argue things like that during the draft, they think they'll look clever in years to come, but a lot of the time just look pretty ridiculous.

Reality is that these analysts make out that they watch a ton of each draftee when they clearly don't and therefore make silly statements. Even GMs who watch a ton of footage these days still stuff up a fair bit so it just shows how hard it is to predict how a player is going to translate into the NBA. But you never ever would pass on a sure thing like Duncan.
