Peter Garrett probably > Tim Rogers in the front man stakes

That said, i am a big You Am I fan and find Rogers a terrific song writer and probably one of the best lyricists this country as ever produced. A true story teller who manages to convey basic matters of the heart and soul and everyday life with depth and feeling. Hourly Daily in particular, a true day to day life in Australia concept album, is a lyrical masterpiece and so easy to identify with.

Summed up beautifully.

*Place any name here* > Tim Rogers.

Said he reads BigFooty in a triple j interview, so he has my respect.

Rumble - good song.

All that and he has given me an excuse once prior to attend a North melbourne function (I'm sure you'll know which one!!)

Did he ....

Well Tim ... if you are reading this , take back what you said about "sound as ever" being carp and all will be forgiven .

Very patronising to people who geniuinely love that album ... still to this day . And Berlin Chair would just about be my all time favourite video .

Is that old boy still kicking around ?

It's just occured to me that I couldnt name a YAI song, have never seen them live and the only definitive thing I can say about them is that Tim barracks for North. The only other thing I can think of is years ago someone told me his mum was in Neighbours.

Can someone tell me some good songs to get started with?

I saw Tim at the footy on Monday. Loves his Kangas.

So after extensive research based soley around the above fact, I have decided that he is indeed the greatest front man in the history of the universe.

How's that for water tight?

Agree 100%

Best band Ive seen live. Love em.

Local Yokel, just get Hourly Daily to begin with, as Carlos says, it's an Australian Suburbian masterpiece.

Remember back in 97ish when he they won an Aria for Hourly Daily, his acceptance speech was simply, "Yeah thanks, but it's not the Brownlow medal".

Best acceptance speech ever!

Agreed. I think Tim's songwriting is brilliant. I don't even think of him in terms of being a frontman. Probably because he plays the guitar.

You must know "Berlin Chair". I think you'll find if you heard it you'd know it.

There wasn't much off their first album i really liked (although its been years since i heard it).

But 1993's Sound As Ever saw Tim really starting to come into his own as a song writer.

My favs from that album:
Berlin Chair
Adam's Ribs
Jaimme's Got a Gal

1994's Hi Fi Way was just about my favourite Australian album of the 90's. Just a great collection of spontaneous sounding tunes, raw yet still rich with some of the best melodies that The Kinks, Small Faces, The Who, The Beatles and The Easybeats never wrote, and some great playing. And the production is superb, one of those that makes you feel like you're in the room with them. Not a bad song on it IMO, but the highlights:

Minor Byrd
Cathy's Clown
Jewels and Bullets
Purple Sneakers
The Applecross Wing Commander
Punkarella
Ken (The Mother Nature's Son)
How Much is Enough (IMO one of the greatest songs ever written by an Australian)

Probably their biggest success and arguably most consistent album was 1996's Hourly Daily. His song writing, particularly his lyrics are just superb. Again, terrific production. The 60's influence was worn well and truly on their sleeve again and while being a little derivative, never quite got to that uncomfortable and almost tedious sounding parody that IMO has made their last few albums a little less essential. But this is an album most Australian's should own IMO. Each song just flows beautifully into the next, but if you must:

Hourly, Daily
Good Morning
Mr Milk (I've read Tim say this is the best song he's ever written in terms of a complete pop tune)
Soldiers
Tuesday
If We Cant Get it Together
Please Dont Ask Me to Smile

Admittedly i havent invested a heap of time in 1998's "You Am I's #4 Record" (Shinners loves it though so hopefully he can expand). I dunno why i didnt quite connect with this one. The songs just werent there for mine. At the time i was probably listening to too much metal or something though, although i was getting a little over the whole "wish we were the Easy Beats" thing which they were taking to silly proportion in terms of look and sound. But from flicking through it as i type this:

What i Dont Know About You
Heavy Heart
Rumble

I stupidly lent my copy of 2001's "Dress Me Slowly" out to a mate not long after i bought it and havent seen it since, but i do recall liking it alot more than #4.

Damage (one of Tim's more gentle, fragile moments)
Satisfied Mind
Get Up
Weeds
Beautiful Girl

I really didnt get into 2002's Deliverence much although it wasnt an album i gave much time to. Kinda has some almost alt-country moments on it as well as the typical You Am I rockers but i dunno, they kinda seemed to lack the teeth of the earlier stuff.

Words For Sadness
One Trick Pony
Ribbons & Bows
Who Put the Devil In You?

Hope that helps.

You have just pretty much described my exact experience with You Am I, Carlos. I was obsessed with them during their first three albums (I think the first one you mention was an EP - I have it and the highlight is one song where a young wailing Tim is angry screaming about the size of his big ********ing nose).

When it came to #4 though, i pretty much completely dropped off. I own every You Am I album, but just never feel the urge to give anything after Hourly Daily a spin. Always wondered if i grew out of them or they just ran their course. Maybe it is a combo of both (the one exception is Damage - awesome song).

As far as the albums go, I have tried and find it very hard to rank them.

IMO Sound as Ever has the best raw songs. Everyone's to Blame, Berlin Chair, Adam's Ribs and Forever and Easy. It also has a couple of pretty average songs though.

Hi Fi Way is just a classic and as Carlos said, not a bad song on it. I can't even count the number of times I have drunkenly sung Purple Sneakers and Cathy's Clown. I agree How Much is Enough comes close to the best You Am I song ever.

Hourly Daily is awesome but not as flawless as Hi Fi Way IMO. Everytime i hear the secret song at the end of the album it is in my head for days.

which ever songs you start with, make sure you have a razor blade handy for afterwards.

You will want to slit your wrists out of extreme boredom

You have poor taste.

Hourly Daily is da bomb ya'll. One of the only few Aussie cd's that isn't wack.

Excellent suggestions here Carlos. You've pretty much nailed all my favourite You am I tracks, although I haven't bought any of the albums since #4 Record.

Another track that I really like is Trike, which was released as a single and was also on the US issue of Hourly Daily at the expense of one of the other tracks.

localyokel, you can't really go wrong with any of the songs off of Hi Fi Way and Hourly Daily (or the whole albums for that matter) that Carlos mentioned.

In their day, were right up there with the best live bands you'll see anywhere.
