Where do you guys see Tim Schmidt fitting into the team in 2009?
He played 14 games in 2007 but we only saw 2 games from him in 2008!
I think Roos should give guys like him 5-6 games each year - make sure their are 1-2 spots up for grabs each week for barlow, brabazon, Schmidt, O'Dwyer to develop a little in the AFL. Any thoughts on how much Schmidt will play in 2009?

He's surely very close to the senior midfield rotation, and in fact the likes of Schmidt in our ranks is why I'm less concerned with drafting smaller, tough ball-getting midfielders and would prefer we go the taller options.

But Schmidt has been unlucky, and I'd strongly expect that if he is not given a fair crack at cementing a senior team position, it willbe his last year with us and will seek a trade, which I think would be disappointing.

I think he will be good at doing Kirkys current job, kind of like Bevan. The "defensive midfielder".

A post from October when I suggested Schmidt's delisting.
Unfortunately he had a contract for 2009.

(Schmidt is) very good at ACT level, scored a couple of nice goals at senior level, but totally failed to impose himself as at midfielder at AFL level.

Bird in one season has done more than Schmidt in his career.

Only 30% of Schmidt's possessions are contested and whilst his disposal is OK (80% efficiency), he averages only 6 kicks a game.

By comparison Kennelly has the same % of contested possessions and a better kicking efficiency (85%) and averages 9 kicks a game.

So that's running half back with a higher contested possession % than a midfielder. It also indicates that Schmidt's much vaunted kicking is far from elite and also that he simply doesn't get enough of the ball.

Schmidt is slow, coming back from a knee op and if we are serious about being a quicker side I fail to see how he is going to help.

Schmidt will be 23 at the start of next season, he has been on the list since 2003 and has had plenty of opportunities to show his capabilities, but has failed to take the chances offered.

Bird, Veszpremi, Moore are all potential centre square players and IMO all are better than Schmidt. Schmidt's only hope in my view is as a small forward.

have to agree with you on that

i really rate schmidt, but there are too many players in his mould in our list, and they are all above him in the pecking order

expect in 2009, more of the same of 2008

probably delisted at seasons end

Schmidt had an injury plagued year in 2008 after playing 14 games in 2007. In 2007 he was showing some really good signs as a developing player.

I think that if he didn't have his injury problems and he played the whole season he would of played more games in the seniors then the 2 he played. This is because it is hard for a young player to maintain form when he isn't consistently playing.

So are you saying that you think he will be injury plagued year in 2009?

even when he wasn't injured, he still struggled to keep his place

and unlike previous years.... guys like veszpremi and bird are now available to play his type of position

he hasn't really broken into the list in previous years..... and now he has more competition

can't see him breaking through

It is hard for players especially youngsters to perform consistently over a season when they are only playing a few games at a time before re injuring themselves. Youngsters really need to gather momentum and gain confidence in themselves and their body. That is why young injury plagued players that have talent eg. Rusling from collingwood, daniel o'keefe are given longer on the list.

14 Games in 2007 doesn't constitute a youngster breaking into the team? i think that is a solid season from a youngster.

In my opinion if Schmidt remains injury free next season i think he will definately be pushing for senior selection.

I agree. I certainly think he will figure in the future at this club in 2009. I obviously see more ability in him than some others though...

hopefully you're right.... but he'll be 23 at the start of next season

so realitically its the be all and end all for him in 2009

It also indicates that Schmidt's much vaunted kicking is far from elite and also that he simply doesn't get enough of the ball.

He averaged 12 possesions a game last year, and only one less this year. I don't know where to find game time stats, but he wouldn't get much time on the ground.
He will be a player given the right opportunities. (I.e not getting dropped after playing good games)

forward.

I think you were advocatinh his removasl in 2007 if i rememer correctly. It is a make a break year though.

However I dont think Schmidt has done anything wrong with his limited chances, which I think is why Roos is giving him the chance in 2009 and i expect we will be seeing a lot more of him as a forward pushing midfielder.
