To all the stantons knockers out there. Get a tape of the game on Saturday night and see the performance that this YOUNG player has put in. 32 touches, 9 tackles, 9 inside 50's, 3 goals.

The most impressive thing about him is his motor and how much ground he covers.

He busts his guts more than anyone i have seen for a long time.

Might not be the most skilled person in the world, but what he lacks there he more than makes up.

Actually the people who knock him must not see him in person, as the tv does not do justice to the running involved in his game.

He is very impressive and more than adequete to wear the great number 5. He will never be hird, and people need to take brent stanton for brent stanton - not Hird.

I was going to start a new thread on this but im the 1st 1 to eat my words! I have been critical on Brent all year but over the past month he has been exceptional! Ive been a Hille knocker aswell & he too has been unbelievable. Keep it up Brensta!

Could you criticise Dyson for us mate, might make us get 3-4 good weeks out of him.;)

But with Stanton, he's always had the ability, had the fitness, great endurance and pace, had many things going for him and his kicking just let him down. I used to wince when he'd have a set shot for goal. I now smile happily seeing him take a mark 45 out knowing with extreme confidence we will be 6 points better off very soon. And his around the ground kicking has picked up hugely well. Keep this up for a few seasons son, you'll be right up there in the competition:thumbsu:

Lol Done!

Guilty.

I always used to think he was handy without being good and in the pre season i really started getting excited about him. Then when the season proper started i was disappointed. But he is getting a lot better now! Not sure he is worthy of the number 5 yet but maybe he might grow into it!

I've always been a fan of his. Absolutely love his work rate, he runs so hard and is getting rewarded for it.

His skills are coming along very nicely. Being only 22 they will get even better.

I was a knocker and he deserved to be knocked. It's great to see how he's turned things around.

I think the most inpressive thing is he has lifted his tackling by almost 2 per game and his goal kicking is up, his disposals are down a little but he seems to be doing more of the team things these days.

I'll admit to that too.
Still got work to do but has definitely answered the call recently.
Still think number 5 should have been laid to rest a little longer though.

If James Hird comes to you and asks you to wear his number, what do you say? oh sorry james.

Hird sought Stanton to wear the number, not the other way around. It is just a number and Staton should not be compared to James just as he has the number.

He is only a young player. he has time on his hands.

Stanton, like Jobe, have to continue to work on thier disposals, but they are skills that you can improve, the ability to win centre clearances, and get the ball in a contested possession situation is something that cant be taught, and these boys have had this forever. Theses two hold a major key in our midfield, and i couldnt be happier about it.

The biggest adjustment he has made over the last year or so is working out the pace of the game. He used to try and run with the ball and get caught a lot -he was obviously relatively quicker in junior / VFL footy - but the pace of AFL is significantly faster. His judgement on when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em etc [come on everyone, sing along.. you know you want to] is improving.

I still think he's a bit of a front-runner however - he needs to (and has the potential to) develop into a player that can change a game, shift momentum towards his team. Too often this year when we were losing, he was one that you wanted to really put in something special, but too often was missing. He's going great now that we're winning!

Or have I got this completely wrong...? Are we winning because he's playing better?

Discuss.

yeah ill admit ive been a bit of a stanton knocker, not harshly imo i have just been critical in the past of his

1. defensive side
2. getting too many cheap kicks

his defensive side has been so much more impressive then every other aspect..
over the last month he has had 24 tackles.. including 9 on the w/e, and 10 against west coast..
that has definately been the most pleasing thing.

Stanton became my favourite player when I picked him in my Dreamteam 2 years ago.
Although he was still guilty of a few shocking disposals over the weekend, I'm pretty pleased with the way he is progressing especially with the defensive side of his game.
The turning point for Stanton this year seemed to be when he became our inside midfielder in Watson's absence. Although his disposal count dropped, his defensive skills and inside work improved significantly. Still rather him stayed as his old number, cause I bought a 24 guernsey middle of last year to have found out that he had swapped to the number 5.

I've said Brent Stanton is one of the worst midfielders in the competition, he's been playing loose man in defense so I haven't been proven wrong yet! ;)

What I will say is that I also berated his kicking, it has been extremely good for the past month- extremely good! :thumbsu:

Who knows, maybe his form might give him the confidence to have another go in the middle with the absence of McVeigh?!?

Slightly off topic, there are many posters that bagged Nash's kicking, one poster said that he was a great kick and that was just in bad form, I agreed. I personally don't think we have a better kick at the club... when it matters! :thumbsu:

yes, agree that it's great that he's tacking more, but still only 8 of his 32 possessions on Sat night were contested (Welsh 15, Watson 11, Monfries 12)
only 2 clearances (Welsh 12, Watson 7)

He's great as long as someone is giving him the ball.

I am glad that he does get contested footy a bit more, but we need an outside player, those names you listed above, are doing a great job to get the ball to him.

His "easy possesions'' might not be contested, but watch him, how hard he runs, makes those possesions not so easy. Plus all that running always gives us an option.

How do you get 6 I50 and 3 goals playing loose in defense?

Played very loose? :D

I was a big Stanton fan at the start of the year, but as the weeks went, even my missus recognised his names from the amount of times I said:

Oh god, don't give it to Stant... ahhh, butchered it!

But this past month I've found myself saying: That's mah boy :thumbsu:, when he delivers it. :D

Being a loose man in defense doesn't mean he can't move outside of the defensive 50 does it? Take Nathan Bock for example. Stanton was very successful moving forward on occasions, he had a great game. Dustin Fletcher kicked a goal from 70 metres last season does that make him a forward?

Anyway it is beside the point, the point is he isn't playing midfield.

Do yourself a favour. Buy tickets this week on the wing. And just watch Stanton. He is an on baller and he is everywhere. Runs as much as anyone in the league.

He's been playing midfield Donners...

I know how much it pains you but Stanton is actually becoming a decent midfielder - let go of the hate :thumbsu:
