Collingwood have defeated Sydney in a thrilling match in Newcastle this afternoon. After overcoming a slow start, where the Swans held sway early, the Pies fought back through Fraser and Rocca, to take out a two point victory in the dying moments. Rocca, who starred throughout the day, thumped through an 80 meter goal in the last term to get the crowd rocking. Positives to come out of the day were the performances of Nick Maxwell, Rocca and Chris Tarrant – who set the side alight in the forward line. Wingman Julian Rowe, the man touted to win the National AFL Rising Star Award this season, but in a blinding second half to stake his claims for a regular position in the side.

In the first quarter, both sides began at a helter-skelter pace, with the ball racing from one end to another. Collingwood broke the game open early, ending the quarter four points in front of the Swans. Former NBL Basketballer David Fanning – who yesterday was promoted to the senior list in place of Tom Davidson who will miss eight weeks with Achillies – starred in the ruck early, showing he will be an able replacement for Guy Richards, while Brayden Shaw – the sone of club legend Tony – generated exciement to the side when he came off the bench early in the piece. Collingwood had trouble quelling the influence of the slippery Ryan O’Keefe and Big Barry Hall during the quarter, which gave coach Malthouse something to think about.

Sydney raced away in the second term, scoring the first four goals of the day – which stung Collingwood into action. The Pies rallied, and pegged back to score steadily throughout the term, and narrowed the margin to only eight points at the main change. The lightning fast Leon Davis, slippery Caracella and lanky Fraser all showed their wares during the quarter, while the evergreen Scott Burns and Paul Licuria controlled the packs after the Swans early burst, which helped get the Magpies back into the contest.

The third quarter was a tight, tense and tough affair, with both sides locked on 84 apiece at the final change. They traded goal after goal, in what promised to be a fight to the death. Dane Swan, Nick Maxwell and Tristan Walker all performed well throughout the term, while Rocca and Tarrant provide able targets in the Magpies attacking one.

In a tense and exciting final quarter, Collingwood managed to hang on in the dying moments to a two point victory, after it appeared the Swans would hold on to a tense victory. Collingwood were the benefits of long kicking twice for the quarter, with defender Nick Maxwell – who enjoyed an excellent match – pushed down the ground to score a 60 meters goal, to begin the Magpies charge. Then, very late in the piece, big Anthony Rocca roosted a huge 80 meter goal to put the Pies back in front, to a lead which they held onto for the rest of the day.

Collingwood now have a weeks break, prior to the round one clash with the Western Bulldogs on Easter Monday at the MCG. The attention now falls on skipper Nathan Buckley, who is under an injury cloud.

is rowe favourite for the rising star award?
No , just let the kid establish himself in the starting line-up first.
Whoever stated he was , was being very silly , he can definitely play though and I would love it if he does but am certainly not expecting it.
