Daw has only ever had one full pre season.

He has been gifted 7-8 matches to see if he can earn a career.

This extraordinary level of opportunity has been rarely extended to a North player in all my years of watching footy. I can think of much better players that deserved games before Majak and were not granted a single match to see if they could luck in to a spot.

There will be no more excusus beyond 2018.

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon believes the decision to drop Todd Goldstein and play Majak Daw could be beneficial for North Melbourne come the trade period.

Goldstein has been out of form and was omitted for this week’s contest against Essendon, leaving Daw and debutant Nick Larkey as the lone big men.

“Majak has teased a bit, he has shown glimpses,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“There is a double-edge sword of playing Majak. You either find out if he is the man or you maybe get form into him and trade period comes and you fatten the cow.

“They need to find out if Majak is capable of holding down that role. When you need to make decisions in the next six weeks about your list, you need to do it with some exposed form.

“Majak, here it is, here is the number one ruck role, you have it for the next four-to-five weeks, let’s see whether you’re capable of being the man going forward.”

Pretty good summary really!

As of today, Daw's value is ZERO. I cant imagine a single side being remotely interested in acquiring him. (Unless something totally remarkable happens to a side similar to WCE late last year, where they had no choice but to look at and recruit Drew) In light of this value, Garry's comment of "fatten up the cow" is pretty damn accurate. We need to increase his value to something...

Leads me to the question, on current form who has more upside...Goldstein or Daw?

The answer is absolutely, undoubtedly definitive that it is Goldstein.
Whilst Goldy is predicated by a massive 'if', but 'if' he returns to anywhere near the form of 2014-2015 then his upside is so far ahead of anything Daw can remotely deliver us.

I have been a huge advocate on these boards for trading Goldy, but it needed to have been done last year. I think the liquidation ship has sailed...

Loosely quoted in his last post game presser and again yesterday, Scott said, that it's his "job as coach to get the best of Goldy back out of him." I see sending him back to Werribee as being Scott's first step in this.
STEP ONE: Regain some touch, some confidence and get him back loving the game again.
STEP TWO: Remove the one thing that was a constant for Goldy and see if he has the desire and want to get it back again!
I expect, Goldy will spend several weeks at Werribee, irrespective of the form of the seniors (excluding. injuries).
Suffice to say, I think we will all learn more about Goldstein over the next few weeks, than we have at any stage of his career to date.

Meanwhile Daw gets an opportunity to play 1st Ruck. This is what most in football have wanted of Daw.
In my opinion, he's not a forward and he's not a ruck. However, he's more of a ruck than he is a forward...
I want to throw Daw to the slaughter and let him ruck his heart out for the next few weeks. Let's fatten up the cow!
Scott's is doing his job for Daw in a similar yet reverse fashion to that of Goldstein.
STEP ONE: Get some touch, get some confidence, develop a love for the game
STEP TWO: Give him the one thing that hasn't been a constant for Daw, and see if he has the desire and want not to lose it!

All this really leads me to is one thing...
One of Goldstein or Daw will NOT be on the list next year.

The next 3 weeks will give us a very good insight. Finger's crossed that Scotty's personal coaching plan for both works!

Good post.

I never saw Ayden Kennedy get a single bonus match in the seniors and he was a considerably better footballer than Majak.

The dreamers can dream, but intelligent people would take Goldstein every time. It's actually laughable that this comparison even exists. In all honesty, North may be playing Majak to justify dropping him off the list if he doesn't grab his opportunity in the remaining games.

Only way Daw is getting dropped off the list is if they pay out the remaining two years of his contract as he is signed up till 2019.

Thanks Dermott.

40 words would've done.

He's actually not a bad ruckman. At a different club I reckon he'd have a chance at getting the most out of himself all over the ground.

So Daw and Goldy both on the books till the end of 2019 ?
And Goldy on plenty of $$$

Wonder whether Pruess can be shaken loose ...

You would think goldy's papers are stamped or agreed to in principal to be somewhere else next year if we are supposedly throwing around 15-16 mill for kelly+martin. We ain't sydney.

Who's trading for , on top of carrying Goldy's generous contract at his age and current form ?
If North can find a suitor , you'd imagine they'd still have to carry a significant portion of his salary .

Preuss is contracted for 2018. So North Melbourne can block any trade. Also he would only be interested in going to a club where he would be the no.1 ruck as in a couple of years (or if Goldstein is traded this year) he will be that at North Melbourne anyway.

Many possible scenarios .
Bottom line is both Goldy and Daw contracted until the end of 2019 with Goldy on big coin .
At this point in time , for a number of reasons , neither look that attractive .
Pruess with only next year to run on his contract however ...

If he's on 800k paying half of that next year would sit comfortably with me providing what we got back in the trade to be satisfactory.

I'd trade him for a pick in the 50's if a team took his full salary.

Why? Extra 2 million in the cap coming this year and you have to pay 95% of the cap. Either way you'll end up spending too much on someone.
Didn't you hear, Dusty and Josh are coming.

I'd be very surprised if he was earning more than $200K p.a.

If we have a late 20s pick, would be happy to give that for Goldstein.

I reckon your lot would cough up next years 1st round pick to have him in a Geelong jumper for round 1 2018.

North would probably do it considering our father/sons next year.
