TOM LAMB

DANDENONG STINGRAYS
193cm, 94kg

Draft smokey Lamb remains his toughest critic

"Lamb's first TAC Cup match of the season for the Dandenong Stingrays was a portent of things to come.
In the first quarter against Gippsland, he twice made mistakes and conceded goals, before he flicked the switch and kicked a bag of six majors in a thrilling one-point win. It's that freakish talent that makes Lamb one of the enigmas of this year's draft.

He's rangy, quick, a strong overhead mark and he uses the ball well, but surprisingly those aren't his strongest traits. "His strength is probably below his knees, believe it or not," Stingrays talent manager Mark Wheeler told AFL.com.au.

"For his size he's unique in athletic ability. He's not far behind (Hawthorn midfielder) Billy Hartung in what he's been able to produce but he's 12 to 15cm taller than him. "Athletically he can do anything he likes. His agility stuff is pretty good as well."

A very interesting prospect who has huge upside, but also significant "bust potential". Probably has a lot of the Jarrad Brennan's about him.

Likely to come into draft calculations around the late teens. Killed it in the endurance testing at the combine and is probably still growing, so may end up 195cm+ by the time he stops.

Player Profile of Tom Lamb:

STRENGTHS:
Endurance Athlete: Tom Lamb boasts elite endurance, running an outstanding 15.5 in the shuttle/beep test at the Draft Combine. He tested in the top 4 percent for VO2 max, a measure of his aerobic capacity and completed the 3 kilometre time trial in 9:45, just 3 seconds behind the 9:42 record set by Joshua Kelly in 2013 (since broken by Jack Hiscox). For his size he has a nice burst of pace and performed well in the repeat sprint.

Confidence: The one thing I know whenever I go to see Tom Lamb play footy, is that he will back himself in and take risks. Lamb is capable of doing what other players do not even think of, not because he’s ‘a freak’ (which he is), but also because he loves to take the game on. Clubs will look to harness his creativity, it’s his biggest strength, he sees avenues to goal and to move the ball on that other players simply do not.

Versatility: Lamb is an awkward size at 193cm and 84kg, but he has shown he can produce the goods at half-back, as a winger and as a tall forward. I particularly like him in the half-back role, as it forces Lamb to be accountable defensively. Up forward his marking is a strength for a player who is not a pure forward, but not something to build his game around at the highest level.

WEAKNESSES:
Non-Preferred Side: Lamb isn’t very trustworthy on the ‘other’ side of his body, where he is prone to bad mis-kicks, his general skill level drops on his non-preferred side. As it is his kicking is quite serviceable, he’s not able to really penetrate by foot but at the same time he hits his targets cleanly. His kicking is certainly not something that will stand out in comparison to other AFL players.

Defensive Running: In the big league, defensive running will quite comfortably be the area Tom Lamb must work on the most. Defensively his efforts range from fair to deplorable. In terms of tracking back and picking up an opponent, he would be one of the worst players in the top 50 of the upcoming draft, which is extremely disappointing given that he is blessed with elite endurance. Lamb is also prone to costly brain fades, from reportable offences to just not thinking through a situation.

‘Tweener’: The long-term vision with Lamb should be to turn him into a tall, game-breaking midfielder (which he is completely capable of being), but right now he’s stuck between being a tall forward and a running player. He does not have the height and more importantly the size to play tall, but there are question marks over his ability to win his own ball playing elsewhere.

Will go to Essendon at 17 or 20 imo
They are being linked with him. If he doesn't he could be right in the mix for our two picks at 21 and 22 and he is being hotly debated on our board at the moment, with some firmly in the "yes" camp and some (who know him personally, in particular) firmly in the "hell-no" camp!

Yep can see why people don't want him as he is a real "bust" potential but if you do take the risk on him, he could be a star.
As for you guys I don't think you will take him. I have Reece McKenzie and Alex Neal-Bullen down for your picks in the 20's.
