Ledger played with Claremont in the WAFL Colts as well as representing Western Australia at the 2010 NAB AFL Under 18 Championship.
He won the Jack Clarke Medal for the B&F player in the 2010 WAFL Colts competition.

Tom was taken with the 59th selection in the 2010 National AFL Draft.

Bio: Lightning fast midfielder who can dodge through backs and emerge with the ball. His strong hands for disposal round out the package. Had 58 disposals and kicked two goals in his four games during the TAC Cup competition.

What type of player are you?

Hard in-and-under midfielder who is skilful on both sides and has the ability to play outside too. I’m a goal-kicker who plays forward comfortably and I consider myself to have fast leg speed and a player who reads the play well.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Leigh Montagna. Fast, athletic and good endurance over the field. More importantly I consider myself, like him, to be skilful with my ability to play inside and outside.

What are your strengths as a footballer?

Skills on both sides of the body, strength in contests, very quick, good endurance, work rate in games, mentally strong and good around clearances and stoppages too.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Overhead marking, kicking under extreme pressure and I’d like to continually get fitter.

MONDAY
The week started at 8:40am with a physio appointment ahead of training at 10am. I’m currently in the rehab group with Dean Polo and Gardy due to a hamstring tendon injury, which I sustained against Geelong in Round 2 of the NAB Cup. Unfortunately tendons take longer to heal and are very prone for reinjury, as seen with Raph Clarke last year. Thus I’ve had a conservative approach to getting back on the field and am currently in Week 6 of my program.

Rehab started with a 5 minute run, 5 minute fartlek (interval running) and a great deal of stretching before commencing my run-throughs, which I was aiming to now do at 100% intensity to prove the hamstring has fully recovered. I managed to run a 3.46 second time for 30 metres and Monty our Sports Scientist was fairly stoked about that. I’m sure he puts it down to his countless hours trying to fix my awkward running style!

Everyone is pleased with how I’m progressing with my recovery, however I still have another week to go in the process. It was really quiet around the Club as no one else besides the rehab group was in. Following running, I did upper body weights with our Strength and Conditioning Coach, who also spends time trying to fix my bench press technique - apparently if I keep going the way I am my shoulders will be ruined in 3 years…so best to fix that up.

Then I headed home for a good rest. I’m currently living with a host family after coming over from W.A.

TUESDAY
Tuesday this week was the designated day for ‘Career Development’ in our Earn or Learn program at the Club. I woke up around 8, had breakfast and then drove to Melbourne Uni to study in the library. Currently I’m still enrolled in Law/Commerce at UWA in Perth and am doing this online, which is a bit of a task especially when there’s minimal face-to-face communication.

I enjoy studying at the Melbourne Uni as a few Perth mates study there as well, which is good. Had a meeting with the Athlete Development Manager to discuss plans to transfer to Melbourne Uni mid-year, seeing as I missed the deadline earlier in the year.

I drove to Seaford at 5pm for light skills with the Development Group. I only half participated in the session due to my hamstring problem and then went through a few things with Paul Huddson in the meeting following training.

WEDNESDAY
Wednesday’s rehab followed the same format as Monday. I did agility work and one-on-one kicking with Monty - he rates his left foot. I then did 300, 250, 200, 150, and 100 meter sprints at the end just for some more fitness, which I’m sure won’t hurt! After the grueling sprint work, I did a bike session.

In the physio room afterwards, our physio gave me stick for losing to David Armitage in a game of Words With Friends, although I’m highly convinced he’s cheating. There’s no way Armo knows the word Quat or Bipod!

I then did an upper body session while the other boys were out at training. It was a shame not being part of the session but I’m looking forward to getting back out there. Then it was home time for another good rest and some sleep.

THURSDAY
Another career development day whereby my first task was to meet my group assignment members in Burwood. After getting lost a few times (still learning my way after moving over from Perth) I finally got there and met my members.

We had a boxing session and light skills at 5pm - boxing is always tough with Jacko, if I ever let my hands down from my face he hits me, it works!

FRIDAY
Massage in the morning followed by rehab again, which was pretty much the same as Monday and Wednesday. It’s very repetitive but I know it’s important to do the process thoroughly.

While I’ve been in rehab it has given me the chance to work on running technique, endurance and strength in gym. I feel like I’m possibly fitter now than I was during the middle of preseason.

Weights followed in the arvo before the team was picked. It’s good to see a couple of the Sandy guys in the extended squad after they had a good three point win over Coburg last weekend.

SATURDAY
We have Saturday off, but I’ll come in to the Club and do an ice bath just to keep the legs fresh and make sure the hamstring’s all good.

SUNDAY
I’ll suit up and attend the Essendon game, which hopefully the boys will win.

Last week I headed down to the rooms before the game and wasn’t quite sure where to stand in the preparation. But as Rooey was pumping up the boys Kosi pushed me in front of him and said “take it all in”. It was a stirring pump up and made the hairs on my neck stand up. It was a great experience to be around the boys before the game and hopefully one day I might get the chance to be part of it myself!
