Tom Williams Retires

Very disappointing news, and not what I wanted to wake up to.

Thank you to Tom for everything he's given the club over the years, both on-field and off-field. It's been a bloody difficult journey for him to say the least, but it's been clear that the club - and its faith in him - have been hugely important to him. It's impossible not to respect him for his attitude and actions towards the club, and I hope we give him all the support he requires - even if he isn't a current player anymore.

I wish him all the best and really hope he can find something he loves as much as footy.

best of luck to the guy

its something I could see happening, but now it has happened
I am a bit shocked he wasn't going to give it one last crack
but perfectly understand that he needs to have a life after footy and he'd want to do that with a fit body
so he can get the most out of life

Thanks for your service, must be the unluckiest player in AFL history.

He can hold his head high having delivered a match winning performance vs Melbourne.

If you guys will indulge me I thought I'd re-post my account of the time that I met Tom.

I was killing time one afternoon waiting for a service to be completed on my car, and decided to have a couple of beers whilst I waited. This just happened to be at the same pub that the Bulldogs were their having their 'Mad Monday' celebrations. Anyway while the boys were up to their usual post season hijinks, Tom came out into the bar were I was sitting alone and proceeded to engage me in a wide and varied conversation. A conversation that was only interrupted from time to time as Lindsay Gilbee came out to have another punt on the horses or dogs or two flies climbing a wall. The thing that stuck with me about Tom other than his friendliness was his clear minded understanding of his place in the team, and how he was only ever minutes away from his career being over. This was 4 years ago.

I don't think I've ever met a player that deserved a better go at it.

Its a real shame that those last few minutes finally caught up with Tom.

Not surprising really, but a shame never the less. A talented player that never got to reach his potential, but at least he can hold his head high with that performance against Melbourne. Took a lot of courage to run out that game. Cheers Tommy

I will remember two games that Tom played in particular. The 2010 NAB Cup Grand Final, and the match against Hawthorn (2010 also I think) when Tom was one of the few defenders in that season who kept Franklin goalless.

A shame to see him go, but I think we can all understand the decision.

Very sad news, best of luck In whatever you choose to do next Tommy. Had some real potential shame his body never allowed him to reach it. Great guy, great clubman! Would love for the club to find him a spot somewhere off field

A real shame that the guy never really reached the potential he obviously had.
That being said, the fact that he stuck it out for so long despite all the setbacks and now graciously retires (allowing a spot on the list for someone else) speaks volumes for the man.
Wish him nothing but the best for his future endeavors.

I can perfectly understand Tom's decision to retire. A person of weaker character would have pulled the pin long ago. I can imagine it feels like a huge weight has been lifted from his shoulders. Best of luck in your future endeavors, Tom.
