Originally taken by Collingwood as a rookie as part of the NSW scholarship program, as a 17 year old he won the Best and Fairest at Collingwood's VFL side. He was then upgraded to the senior list where he played 9 games for the pies. He was then traded to the Bulldogs in 2012 in return for pick 71. Born in April 1992 and standing at 191cm he wasn't expected to make an immediate impact in the red, white and blue.Bulldogs list manager Jason McCartney said Young's fierce competitiveness and clean hands in close are some of the key attributes of the utility.

“We see him as a long-term prospect after he showed really promising signs at Collingwood over the past couple of seasons, particularly with his willingness to take the game on and his cleanness around the contest,” McCartney said.

However, Young's good pre-season form saw him immediately slot into our best 22 where he has played predominately as a third tall/medium defender. Of note is his uncanny ability to read the ball in flight

Not that he's exactly set the world alight, I feel that he's come in and been great for us. I was definitely skeptical that he'd fit into our side, but to get a best 22 player with a pick in the 70's is a big plus. I really like the way he can drift off his player and take marks just like Lake did. Not only does he read the flight of the ball exceptionally well, but he can read where the ball is going to be kicked to as well. I hope he can continue to come on and one day become a really good player for us, but for now I think he deserves a mention for proving his worth.

I agree. Young has been pretty good in defence - both one on one and drifting off his man. With the ball in hand he doesn't try anything fancy and seems to have pretty good composure.

It's even more impressive when you consider that he's just turned 21 (four days ago) which puts him in the same vintage as Liberatore, Wallis and Dahlhaus. Young could be a long term player for us.

I think he's filling the Hargrave role as the 2nd or 3rd tall defender and doing a decent job so far. Similar size and capabilities, at the cost of pick 71 (same # as Lake in 2001 funnily enough). An inspired selection :thumbsu:

Isn't it that once these threads die down (say leaves page 2) they get merged into Dog Tags anyway?
We don't usually have a heap of toast threads, since this stuff usually goes into the review thread after the game.
It's ok this week, but preferably in the future everything is just kept in the review thread for stuff about that game, or straight in the players respective Dog Tags thread if it's just in general.

Doing the Hargrave role better than Hargrave did over past couple of years as so far he actually looks before blindly panicing and kicking it to opposition.

Discussion regarding the form of a specific player should always go into Dog tags. If they get injured, it can go into Dog tags or the injury thread. Discussion regarding multiple players (e.g. the ruck department or the forward line) is worthy of its own thread. We wanted a Dog tags sub board, let's not make it redundant

The other annoying thing about Hargrave was his tendency to give away silly free kicks. But he was more than a handy player overall and if Young can get to 200 games, we're big winners from this trade :)

Oh, right, that makes sense. I just instantly assumed that once every thread about a specific player dies down they are merged into Dog Tags, but yeah with toast thread's it's different.

Shaggy was outstanding during our prelim years, and pretty ordinary in a lot of the other years.

Gilbees the guy we need to replace. What an awesome talent he was. Underrated in my opinion.

Jj is promising, but is more of a Harbrow replacement (although jj defends better).

I'd love another Gilbee like surgeon with the footy off half-back. Not easy to find.

Glad to see Young in the side, prime example of why i want him in the side is when he slowed down motlop during the 3rd q on the weekend, normally a lot of defenders give up against him but he kept him infront of him for a short period of time.

I agree JJ reminds me of Harbrow, but an accurate boot....McKenzie would be good

I think McKenzie tries to 'over kick' the ball at times - like our own Howard. I'm not sold on either. Bring back Lindsay! :p

Then again, I could be completely wrong. You see more 'live' footy than I do Dogs_r.

Mckenzie re-upped with the suns. :(

If jj can ever get to Harbrows level it would be a great result, Harbrow turned a preliminary in his second year with his 3rd quarter. Harbrows been the gold coasts second best player this year, he's still the line breaker the team still needs.

Young does seem to be a bargain the big knock on him was his kicking but that's been fine this year

You can make one if you like.
Haahaha, I didn't see the new topic button down the bottom! I just assumed I didn't have permission for some reason.

Spot on, because you can kick a long way does not make you a good kick !

Haha, you certainly do have permission. You should make one :thumbsu:*

*not saying this just so I don't have to make one

We would have expected Goodes and Lower to get a go straight away because of their respective ages and Koby was always likely to play from day one as well. No one expected Young to come in and play the way he has so it's been a major bonus. It'll be a while before we know whether he'll be a long term player but at the moment it seems our list management strategy is working. It seems to be far more targeted than in the past. Vez, DJ and Sherman were never really regulars (Sherman was to begin with I suppose) whereas these four have come in and played a role from day one.

Really like him so far!

Also on Gilbee, really want to get him back to the club as a specialist kicking coach, just such a perfect action. Could really help a lot of players out!

According to the Bulldogs magazine, he is.
