Don't know if this has been discussed much yet, but:

I really think the last few weeks have been as good as I have seen these two in combination. There have been times when they used to spoil each other going for marks but this is not happening now.

I look back to the 2009 finals - especially the Prelim, and that's when I though Hawk came of age. Then came 2010, and Pods expolded on the scene. I kinda think this unsettled Tom - in that he was no longer sure what his role in the side was. Almost as if he plays better when he is "the man" or "top banana" if you will.

It would seem this has been sorted out now. No more Tom in the ruck. Pods still kicking some goals, but also providing those searching leads when we are more than a kick away from a shot at goal. The Hawthorn game was fantastic - Pods played a key role in separating the Hawthorn backmen, whilst also taking some good marks up the ground.

The other benefit of not having them both contest a mark around 30m out is that when the ball did fall to ground in those situations, we were too top heavy and the defnce ran it out too easily. I still see this as a weakness in our game but it's not as bad now.

We won the GF last year without Pods - some suggest his substitution even helped the balance of the side. Maybe true, but I think now we have the benefit of actually making it work. Tall contested mark options are gold in finals pressure. I'm liking what I see at the moment.

Last couple of weeks Podsiadly has looked great, taking some good grabs and kicking well. His confidence should be now much higher than it was against Hawthorn in his first game back after a long layoff.

Earlier in the year I questioned our forward set up as often both were in the same pack, basically making it impossible for either to mark. In my opinion they should never be near eachother, either one a kick ahead of the other, or leading different parts of the forward line. They are doing this much better now and this leaves the opposition defence much more exposed.

I love the fact that either Pods or Hawkins will happily sacrifice their own game for the sake of the team winning.

Hawkins could actually become the decoy in a final and it would be something many wouldn't expect given his current hot form so the defender would certainly have to go with him but Pods is such an accomplished forward that he'd have no issue booting 4 goals one out with anyone.

Another great example of the Club going quietly about its' business and rectifyling weaknesses.
I agree they used to get in each others way but , presto, this has been worked on and now rectified. Same goes for Toms' goal kicking - I've gone from a nervous wreck, unable to watch , to a mindset of " he'll kick this"
We saw the Dogs try to crowd him and whilst they restricted him to an extent he still kicked 4 . This will work to our advantage provided we share the ball and spot up other forward options like Pods and the array of mediums and smalls we have. An in form Hawkins makes us so much more potent and dangerous provided we select the right forward option and I reckon we are smart enough to realise this and make it happen.

you reckon as long as he nails that first goal the yips disappear or say, he's 30 out directly in front but hits the post...you think it could get to him?

I can't believe the amount of times he hits the post with his first shot of the day.

I think the big change has come from getting rid of the left to right fade - bloody hard to get this right as the amount of fade varied depending on how far out he was and how hard he kicked it. He kicks so much straighter now and all he has to do is get his alignment right and those tree trunk legs do the rest. His run up , grip and ball drop are now much more conventional and relaxed.
I also think his confidence is sky high and even when he misses now he doesn't look as crushed as he used to - he is also less inclined to pass off now when he is in range. Fantastic turnaround which looks very sustainable !!

I'm not sure if true but someone said something about a betting agency offering like $2.50 for Hawkins to hit the post, I'm surprised the amount of times he hits it as well

I reckon he's hit the post with his first shot of the game about five times just this year.

LOL

Just imagine with Menz in the forward line as well

yeh we need that smaller high leaper that gets defenders worried about the quicker 1st step as they usually give away free kicks.
Just hoping he comes back the same as when he left :thumbsu:

Will be kinda like receiving a no.1 pick the day he's back in the seniors

I think the big change has been that since Pods returned from injury, he is accepting of his role in support of Hawkins as opposed to last year where Pods was the main target or at least equal. There is a clear hierarchy that both players are comfortable with.

true, but unlike Dawes, it doesn't put him off for the day. I think the set up of those two big guys playing wide of each other is sensational, and part of the making of Hawkins. For a team like the hawks with a small back line, and dependent on the third man up, it blows their defence apart.
