I have been quietly following this season of the TSL and hoping that all went well and by all accounts things are ok. But now we hit a snag. Can someone plese tell me the benefits of having a top 6 instead a top 5. Surely this makes more sense or am I missing something? Fair enough if there were more teams in the comp but having a ten team comp and a top 6 is rubbish as far as I am concerned. I might be wrong and I am happy for someone to explain how the 6 is better.

With a uneven draw weighted in favour of less travelling via more games against teams in your own region then it makes sense to have final 6.

The top 3 from each region then should make the final 6.

The final 6 system being used is a good one too.

I think Clarence are a dark horse but Glenorchy to take it out for mind.

The northern teams to drop off as the going gets tough. ha ha

Thanks Budha. I have been looking at the top 6 and how it works out. I can see it now. Although the amount of teams in the comp is still a sticking point for me and a top 5 would make more sense in getting the best teams in the finals. I know that having one more side in the finals series probably doesn't make a great deal of difference but it might make sides improve that much more to get into the finals.

At least for this year, the Top 6 has been vindicated in my opinion.

Glenorchy and Burnie have been clearly the top 2 sides for the whole season, and deserve the advantage of a week off (and 2 off for the winner of that game).

North Hobart in 6th have been far from disgraced and on their day could match it with the top few. It will always be hard work for the team finishing in 6th to make it all the way, but it at least allows 60% (assuming even spread across teams) of supporters something to follow come finals time.

If it helps create a bit more interest for 6 teams as opposed to 5 then I'm all for the Top 6.

Mercury says the final 6 system will be changed for 2010. The changes mean it resembles the final four/final five systems with an extra week, i.e. one team drops away per week, so:

Week 1
1 v 2 (Winner called A, Loser called B)
3 v 4 (Winner called C, Loser called D)
5 v 6 (Winner called E)

Week 2
B v C (Winner called F, Loser called G)
D v E (Loser called H)

Week 3
A v F (Winner called J, Loser called K)
G v H (Winner called L)

Week 4
K v L (Winner called M)

Grand Final:
J v M

Personally, I think these changes are good ones for the league. As kenrosewall has said, the top-two and other-four final six worked just fine this year - the system reflected where the divides were. Unfortunately, that's not likely to be the case too often. I think this system is a fairer system for the league. What are your opinions on this system?

Yes I would have to agree that the new finals system is much better.

Agree with the new finals system although I wish they would use all the grounds for the first week at least. Also Southern Grand Final at NHO would be awesome.

I like the new finals system.

Has anyone any idea as to when the draw is going to be released for the 2010 season?

Yes I would have to agree that the new finals system is much better.

Why? If the top two teams happen to be the strongest then the finals series for them will read:
W1 first plays and beats second

W2 first has week off
W2 second plays and beats third

W3 first plays and beats second AGAIN

W4 first has week off
W4 second plays and beats third AGAIN

W5 first plays second for the THIRD game in a row in the gf

Weird scenario, what I was suggesting though was that it is better favouring the top 4 (as opposed to just the top 2)
