Half the season has gone and haven’t we had some surprise packets? I’ve chosen not to include 2009 National draftees (Pre-season is fine) in the list but selected a list of players who have burst onto the scene this season and have surprised the footballing public. Here is my list.

What is your list? Agree with the list above? Anyone unlucky you think? Would like to hear your thoughts on it. Some people say Pods should be one and same say Richard Douglas was unlucky to miss out. What is your verdict?

1. Jamar - Gone from potential delisting to backup All-Australian ruckman.

2. Barlow - Huge leap from good VFL player to elite AFL player.

3. Pods - For 10 years all recruiters said he was too slow and too one dimensional, making them look like fools.

4. Gwilt - Gone from a plug the hole ordinary player to a key member of Saints defence shutting down opponents and creating plenty of run, he is the Harry O'Brien of StKilda only much better and without the hype and bullshit.

5. Riewoldt Jnr - Always had talent but a bit of a nutter and has a few tickets on himself. Has been able to backup those tickets now and is one of best contested mark players going around, if he can put a little more size on will be exceptional player.

6. Geelong's FB/CHB- If you had said that Geelong would be without Scarlett for periods and Harley, Milburn ageing and nowhere near as effective and Mackie playing ordinary in 2010 you would expect a Geelong decline but main reason their defence has held up is great form of Taylor AND the reinvention of Lonergan as a FB to play on the big guys. Lonergan's work this year has been very underated.

7. McGuire - Most people thought he was finished, too slow and won't make it back. Has proved one of the few trading sucesses for Voss as was in very good form in first half of season, particualrly considering he virtually had to hold entire backline together given Brisbane's backline injuries this year.

I would have thought Malceski would have gotten a mention. His career was over if he hadn't of turned it on like he has this season.

Grundy was mentioned.

Do you think Malceski has had an overall better season than Grundy?

We all knew Maceski could play but Grundy was more of a surprise in my opinion.

After last nights game, Gwlit would have got a mention. Maybe over Edwards or O'Halipin. Gwilt has been great this season overall.

IMO i think Malceski has been better, or more consistent at least. Grundy was sensational in the first 4-6 weeks and looked to be in AA form, but has since waned. Malceski has been one of our best and should be right up there for B&F honours.

EDIT: I reckon the list in the article is pretty good otherwise. Riewoldt jnr, Jamar, Pods and Barlow have been excellent this year. One worth considering could be Wellingham too. He's done well this year too.

Thanks.

Wellingham has been mentioned by a few people but this year he has been in and out of the side, though he has been good but not as good as the players mentioned in the article.
