The width of it is the key.

A cyclone can be hundreds of metres wide while a tornado is much smaller.

actually to answer my own question i thought cyclones originate over a body of water (ie the ocean) whilst tornados can develop over a land mass.

You guys had a tornado? I guess that is pretty unusual for you there....did they actually spot one? Any damage done?

It's a pretty common occurrance here in the states; I have actually seen a couple with my own eyes. We make a pretty big deal out of tornado warnings; they will interrupt network television and they also will set off air-raid sirens to warn people outside.

A tornado can be anywhere from 50-100m wide up to a kilometre if it is really large and strong. Generally the wind speeds in the centre are about 100-200 km/h, but in severe tornadoes the winds can actually reach speeds of 400-500 k/h and will obliterate concrete buildings.

In your hemisphere, they rotate clockwise (99% of the time, in rare cases they go the opposite way)....up here, they rotate counter (or anti) clockwise.

From the Geelong Addy...

Twister touches down in Leopold

A large tornado swept across the Bellarine Peninsula yesterday narrowly missing properties in Leopold.

The twister, measuring between 100 and 200 metres across, hung suspended from an enormous band of storm clouds about 6:10pm.

Balh, blah, blah, you get the picture. No damage and they just showed it on the news update. Cool.

Hopeful question from disillusioned Cats supporter family member:

"Did it destroy Shell Stadium?"

:D
