Ok, so apparently the Pies have the toughest draw according to Champion data.

We have to play Geelong, Hawthorn, Carlton, Essendon and West Coast twice this season on our way to the finals. To me all this means is that Geelong, Hawthorn, Carlton, Essendon and West Coast will drop two games against us for the year and hopefully end up somewhat off the pace. :D

We had a tough draw in 2010, if the team plays well it won't be a problem, and like you said it could mean more losses to the other top sides haha! It's a good test for the team to know where they're at and to be kept in check throughout the year. The toughest part of the draw is travelling 3 times in the final 6 rounds.

On a related note it's funny how the AFL last year said blowouts weren't a problem, but this season the top teams play each other and a lot and the teams who struggled play each other twice as well.

i prefer us having a tougher draw. like in 2010, it prepares us well for the pointy end of the season. The late season travel is now 2 seasons in a row which i find odd, but it wont matter all that much i think.

the top teams playing each other more often as well as the average sides doing the same etc is the most logical way of making the competition more even.

If it broke down as:

top 6 - play each other twice (10 games), rest of the comp once (12 games)
Middle 6 - play each other twice (10 games), rest of the comp once (12 games)
bottom 6 - play each other twice (10 games), rest of the comp once (12 games)
youd see a lot fewer blowouts and a few more teams contending later on in the yr

I prefer the tough draw.

We definitely had an easier draw in 2011, and look what happened, we only lost to one team, and that team was of course our grand final conqueror.

I'd prefer us to have an easier draw, and lose 4-5 games then what happened last year, at times it seemed we were just waiting to put teams away late, after basically playing with them for 3 quarters. And then when the finals came we lacked both the physical and mental ability to play 4 quarters of tough, hard, uncompromising football.

Bring it on.:)

Don't you Mean Harder Draw?

But I agree the Easy Draw made the Side not Mentally Strong Enough

It was more a physicality problem the club ran into at the end of the season rather than the mental side, and the easier draw covered it up. I suppose a couple of losses could have caused Malthouse to try a few new things but IMO it was just a poor run that was unavoidable, not matter what the circumstances were. Geelong hit their straps at the right time (or at least didn't fall apart) and were the better team when it counted. Playing tougher teams at the end of the season with the injuries and suspensions the club had wouldn't have made the side better in the finals.

This thinking just baffles me.....it blatantly rewards mediocrity and would potentially give undeserving teams a leg up.

ie take last years finishing positions after finals as a guide

Sydney finished 6th, they would play 10 games against Geel, Coll, Haw, WC and Carl....being optimistic I reckon they would be happy with 3 wins from those 10.

St.Kilda finished 7th, they would play 10 games against Ess, Nth, Dogs, Freo and Rich.....being optimistic they would be aiming for 8 wins from the 10.

Not to mention Melbourne, who by finishing 13th, would get 10 games against, Adel, Port, Bris, GC and GWS.....if they won less than 9 of those they would be unhappy. So from the remaining 12 games the Dees would only need to win 3 to make finals, upset a couple of teams and would walk into top 4 simply because of the stupid fixture!!

It simply makes a mockery out of things, by punishing sides that finish 6th and 12th, and rewarding teams finishing 7th and 13th.

Tough? I guarantee there are still many opposition supporters who will find a foolhardy way to counter that. Like they do every year. AFL giving us favourable draws every year..... Damn them!

What is the rationale behind Collingwood (2nd) and Hawthorn (3rd) getting a tougher fixture than Geelong (1st)?

If I had to make a wild guess I'd say that Geelong not having to share a home ground probably makes them a bit more flexible with the fixturing. And also (in Collingwood's case anyway) the club and AFL are more inclined to fix the schedule to maximise crowd numbers.
