I've been listening to a fair of of stuff by The Jam lately and one song which struck me was Town Called Malice simply because there is another song out there which has virtually ripped off the whole song but I can't figure out whhich song it is.

Any fans know what I am going on about? Anyone bored and want to listen and find out for me since I am having a severe case of TOT!

Don't know if this is the song you are thinking of,but when THE SMITHS "THIS CHARMING MAN" came out (Late 83) a mate of mine at the time use to go bunta that The Smiths had ripped off The Jam's "Town Like Malice" (which came out sometime in 82). I can see similiarities but I am not that convinced.

By the way if you are getting into the Jam give the album "Setting Sons" a spin. IMO it's their greatest work of some very good work.

Thanks LL thats the song I was thinking of. A friend of mine has also been drawing comparisons to Lemonheads "Mrs Robinson" but its a fair stretch and not where I was headed anyway.

Sorry to nitpick but it's Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson.

I cant see any similarity between A Town Called Malice and This Charming Man. One sound like a Jam song, the other like a Smiths song.

He means the version by The Lemonheads. Anyway The Lemonheads version is infinetly better than the hippy crap S&G come out with.

You can read the minds of other posters? What a handy skill that must be to have.

The Lemonheads version is not a radical reworking of the original, so I don't see how it could potentially sound like Town called Malice, but the S&G version supposedly doesn't. The two songs are nothing alike anyway.

It's cool if you don't like S&G, but simply writing them off as "hippy crap" is just musical ignorance.

Look there's probably lots of hidden depths to their songs but more than one at once and I'm ready to kill someone.
