Im going up there with some mates for a holiday next month and just wanted to get some insight from fellow roos fans about the place.

Things to do in terms of pubs clubs etc and what the joints like in general.

Never thought of it before but how lame is the name Townsville. Sounds like it should be the boyhood home of a DC Comics superhero.

It is named after it's founder who was called Robert Towns.

Palmer St is a nice place to get a feed.

So it IS Townstown. Cool. I think he's after a little more than a feed DR, seeing he'll be there with a bunch of mates and is after pubs/clubs info.

A feed is a start though.

thanks 4 the advice so far guys

where we are staying is towards belgian gardens.

google maps says its about 3 km awayfrom palmer st

Can I ask you why you chose Townsville out of all the places you could go?

A couple of hours further North you have Cairns and Port Douglas which has the Daintree Rainforest, Cape Trib, Mossman Gorge etc, as well as the best of Great Barrier Reef.

Further south you have the amazing Whitsundays.

What the deuce is in Townsville?

Sadly, that is all.

Are you an old Reds fan or a supporter of another A-League team R4e? If so, which team? That's a classic Fowler shot eh?

"We all live in a Robbie Fowler house............................"

Liverpool all the way, 'toes, and have also been fond of Celtic for as long as I can remember thanks to my family. That shot of Fowler is fantastic, one of my favourite goal celebrations by anyone.

Am a big follower of the A-League as well though, and go to a few Victory games, but tbh, I'm leaning towards hopping on the new Melbourne side. Will be great to see the derbies next season and supporting a side right from their inception and also being the underdogs in terms of support.

You support the Victory don't ya? I'll have to learn to start hating them as I do quite like them, but don't feel that connection to actually support them. But I'll never hate them as much as Sydney FC and Adelaide United, they'd be my most hated sides in the world behind Man Utd, Chelsea and Rangers I reckon.

Yep, a Victory diehard since day dot. Followed the NSL prior to MVFC's inaugural game but couldn't wait for something new. Leeds United in England but since their financial demise I keep an eye on them whilst supporting the Aussie players, wherever they play. Watch every EPL and A-League game, no different to the AFL games all year.

I'll watch the new team in Melbourne as well, as they're still representing Melbourne, but I'll be Victory for life................or for the life of the club, but I suspect it'll keep on keeping on.

Robbie's quickly taken free kick goal tonight for NQ was superb. The guy's an absolute legend...............I just prefer to think of him as an LUFC legend ;)

Haha Leeds legend. I'll be honest, I was actually on the Leeds bandwagon when Fowler was there but then I decided to follow Soccer full time just after their financial demise which saw me take up the Reds.

Haven't seen his free kick yet from the NQLD game yet, as I just got home from the Victory game. Adelaide were smashed off the park in the first half, was more even in the second, but Melbourne deserved the 3-1 win. Hernandez is easily my favourite player in the league, did well again with two assists, he's the difference between going back to back and just making the finals IMO.

I never miss a Victory game and I agree on Carlos' importance.

The Fowler free kick goal, which I assume you've seen by now, was spoken about on ESPN Soccernet Press Pass tonight, and described as "Crafty!"

Go the Victory!!!!!!!! (Gold Coast are pretenders and pox!)

Have perused other posts I'll add my bit.

Belgian Gardens (not staying at Seagulls by any chance?- if so watch out for the flies) and this one is for Mastermind, used to be called German Gardens til WW1.

Yep Palmer street is O.K. highly recommend Bennys Hot Wok and Cactus Jacks and the seafood place at the round-a-bout. also most of the pubs, especially the Australian do good eats. As for night clubs, cheap Tuesdays at the Criterion on The Strand is supposed to be good, as one of the young fellas here often takes a sickie on Wednesday. The night club "district" is in Flinders St East tho don't ask me which ones are good (ummm friend's kids go to the Heritage Bar/Mad Cow/Consortium/Bullys...way past that and living on Magnetic Island once I'm home i stay there. Not sure of the date but I think the next full moon party on the island at X Base (at Nelly Bay on Maggie Is) is on Fri Nov 6 so if you're into sex, social diseases, drugs, booze rock and roll and trying to chat up blonde backpackers go for it. The last ferry back to "Australia" is around 12.30 a.m. - can always stay somewhere if you want.

Happy hour at the Watermark - on the Strand - on Friday's from 5 to 7 isn't too shabby - drinks are 2 for the price of 1. The restaurant part next door charges like a wounded bull. The Seaview on the strand isn't too shabby with a HUGE beer garden, pool tables etc. And the steaks and pizza are good there as well.

It's warming up here so I hope you have air con wherever you're staying.

cheers

Yeah, was great thinking by him for that quick free kick.

As for the Gold Coast; they have turned to absolute shyte. I remember watching them earlier in the season against Adelaide and thinking that was as good an A-League performance as I've ever seen, and then to see them go on and put in the worst A-League performance I've ever seen over the weekend was just comical.

I haven't been on this tour but those in the know tell me Jazza sailing tour - day trip around the island is good - it is $100 which covers, snorkelling, stops at secluded bays, lunch, swimming on at 42 foot yacht the day trip hoursrs are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.....also byo booze - i think..the web site is jazza.com.au - departs from horseshoe bay, north side of the island...i have a friend coming up from southern NSW over xmas and will probably do this trip as well...fyi 3 pubs on the island..highly recommend the Marlin Bar at Horseshoe...bus service there as well..if you decide to do Jazza i'd say aim to get the 8.30 ferry over then bus to Horseshoe..you can get a ticket that includes ferry and all day bus pass.

good luck and don't forget the sunscreen.

Seagulls isn't far from a bus stop, but it's a bit erratic tho i reckon about $15 MAX one way by taxi...to the city area, which isn't all that great.

I knew you'd be all over the subject of "what to do in Townsville?" Gabbie, hence my initial response. You haven't disappointed!

I nearly added and if you plan to be up this way early july there's always the V8's...and it's not cold - T shirt weather during the day tho i'd rather have a hot poker in my eye than watch cars go round and round and round all day.

Grab a jet ski & do a lap around magnetic island, always good fun. Just be sure to wear a stinger suit & try to hang on. Palarenda channel isn't called Tiger Shark alley for nothing ;) Go for a drive up into the rainforest as well. Paluma National Park is beautiful. Waterfalls galore & Paluma township itself houses about 120 people. About half way up to the town is an old stone bridge over a massive waterfall with about 5 tiers to it. You can take a dip in there then head up to town. Nice restaurant in Paluma & the turn off up to the dam is a few k past town. Road up to it's a little rough but well worth it. Little Birthday Creek Falls are spectacular. Seriously just explore the area. There's a good lookout heading up to Harveys Range & the teahouse up there has that uber catpoo coffee that costs $50 a cup. South you've got alligator creek, another national park & awesome swimming hole. If you want fresh food while yer there grab some from the farms out there on the roadside. $5 for a bag of mangoes (god I miss that) etc. Just don't get stuck in town the whole time you're there. There's plenty around the place to keep you well occupied.
