It's my understanding that it's an actual term for a medical condition defined by professionals though. The fact obesity has been normalized and morbid obesity (which I think is what you're thinking of) is the freakish outlier doesn't really factor into how the term is used in that context. Of course the cutoff is somewhat arbitrary. I assume it's based on where the health effects have been determined to kick in the most dramatically.

I think people in general underestimate the health effects of being overweight. From the heights of internet knowledge (wikipedia) i've found that a clinical study found that in women a BMI of 32 (30 is the obese cutoff in the West afaik) is associated with a doubled mortality rate and another one found being in the obese range reduces life expectancy of two to four years.

The worrying thing is that on average Australians (just men in this example) are 178cm tall and 85kg for a BMI of just under 27 which is overweight according to most charts. I'll give you that for some people that is perfectly healthy, and for the same height there are people who are 70-75kg and that is healthy for them. Just looking at West Coast Liam Ryan is 179/72 and pretty lean, Willie Rioli is 175/80 and on the limit for being portly and playing footy at AFL level. We don't have anyone else playing under 180cm tall. I can't think of anyone in the comp who would be under 180cm and 85kg or more.

Just walking around the city most people could probably afford to lose some weight, whether it's just a kilo or two for the majority or 10-20+ for some or another person worth for others. Only a small minority of the population are in peak condition and that's pretty normal. But there are still plenty of healthy people around. But the average says that we're about 10kg overweight. If 9 out of 10 people have a BMI of 25 (very generous) and the average is nearly 27 then that means the 10th person had a BMI of 40+. Call it 8/10 and it's still two with 35+. This is well past 100kg for people of average height which is dangerous.

If I get to my "healthy" range I look sick and like skeletors face.

I feel heathy now but Im in the obese range.

Its quite alarming reading that.

Im aiming to lose another 10kgs (no time limit... that stresses me out and has backfired in the past) so then I'll be in the overweight range then re-assess.

BMI is less accurate the taller you are. It’s based on height in metres squared, but if you doubled someone’s height you’d expect their weight to go up more then double, if it’s proportional. This only really affects those over six feet though. It’s another flaw of the BMI, this one is not taking into account a taller population then when it was conceived.

You don't see adults twice the height of other adults, though. There aren't many adult males in Australia under 170cm or over 200cm, the majority of the population is in a pretty narrow band. If you look at the AFL the height:weight ratio decreases the taller players get. Most ruckmen and key position players over around 2:1 while your average 185-190cm midfielder weighs less than half their height in kg.

People need to stop trying to poke holes in BMI as a reference/guide and looking to point score on specifics and compare themselves to professional athletes. Shane Mumford had a BMI of 27 and is a lump of a lad. Anyone who has got a BMI of 30-35+ then you'd want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his Mr Olympia days to claim that it's muscle.
