Reading the boards about the Stenglein Trade I have come to the conclusion that maybe I want too much now and have given no thought for the future.I would rather a top 10 player at WC rather than a draft pick.I also was trying to get my head around how we can beat the ''going home syndrome''

Reading a lot of posts on not only this but other trades I had a thought( it was lonely so i had another) but is it wise to draft an interstate player who is just developing and then use him in 2-3 years time to bring one of our own back?

With Pav my thought was we trade Stinger to Freo for Dylan Smith who isnt a regualr player but I feel has potential to be a regular and strong contributor we then have someone we can swap back for Pav. The other benefit of this is if the player is fantastic we may not need the player we want :p

And can that be a strategy for other players and clubs? Do we need to think further along than next year?

As long as we recruit people from interstate we will always have the going home problem

Lucky Kane Johnstone hasnt hurt us.

But if the best available player when you have your pick is interstater then you have to take him.

I know its a pain in the bum when they leave but if we get a fair compensation for them then I am not against it.

I agree I guess what I am trying to say is if Dylan Smith is the 3rd best choice after 1 Vic recruit and a SA player do you skip the 2 and choose someone you can Re-Use further down the track more effectively than the first 2

Lets be honest draft choices are a barrel shoot anyway so skipping a choice here and there wont hurt...unless your names Hodge or Ball

The other argument and one that is raging is ''what is fair compensation? ''

It's a dangerous philosophy with two major risks:

* Will this guy turn into something worth trading and
* Will the club we're targetting actually want him down the track?

absolutely 100% Not!!!

you take the best player, and see what happens. your theory relies upon a forward expectation of the players worth to another team, we can't reliably forecast the basic hit/miss rate at the moment.

The player going home syndrome, is not a problem. never has been, never will be. The problem is not getting fair value.

As long as we get fair value, I don't care if the player is traded to a gay cabaret troup in Vegas.
Not that there'd be anything wrong with that :p

as a wise man once said

nail. hammer. head. :p

We must always take the best talent available no matter where from. As I've said b4...other clubs will always take SA talent.....we must continue to take the best available....at least down the track we might have a bargaining chip to either bring home a Bulter/Waters/Thommo....or secure a decent draft pick. For every Kane Johnson / Tyson Stenglien wanting to go....theres always a Jarman or a decent deal to be done..

Always take the best talent
