Well I strolled down from my new place in Carlton North to our favourite sporting locale - where the overcast morning was keeping fans away - that and probably the fact that it would be a light session after the intra club match on that stinking hot monday. In fact the only two 'supporters' watching training were my gf and I.
Obviously - as you all know half the squad had already left for Merimbula so the session was reltatively basic.
After some criss cross handball the boys went into some lanework with one lane parallel to each of the perimeter lines of the centre square - sort of like a mini-circle work, but with a square and more like lanes... anyway
Following this was an end to end drill with cones at the goallines - top of the fifty and wings. What I saw of note:
Bannister - worked his ass off - running hard at everything his footskills were very good and his hands clean - I hope he brings some of this into the season.
Ackland - looks quick and mobile - McLaren looks ordinary - ordinary skills - but seemed to be in a quasi recover group during certain times.
Simmo - looks like he has the ball on a string and appears to have the whole team behind him.
Bentick is looking fitter and moving well
Lappin seems to have a fair command over his team mates and ran a couple of the drills (possibly VC???)
The guys then went into a Geelong triangle at the Legends end - with goal kicking - I was surprised at how many shots were missed in this drill - and felt better about my own efforts at training - ha ha ha - but more seriously I felt a bit of my pre-season idealism dwindling.
To end - at the request of Fev - there was a set shot knock out competition. Fev and Simmo went down to a close finish - with Simmo emerging victorious.
Not the most awe inspiring training - but entertaining nonetheless - especially for those Carlton tragics amongst us.
