Our selectors really want him in the 22 and they will find a way, I sorta do too ... playing in the reserves will not assist with his development. Some of his team mates will be playing at a very intense level this year and he should probably be there to witness and learn the killer instinct he needs (ala 2nd quarter v Collingwood where he was quite good in that 10 minute patch).

I was reading something that Monty over at FanFooty wrote suggesting that with Mooney back in, and Ablett spending more time forward he couldn't see a spot for Varcoe.

Now lets assume that David Johnson was the replacement for Hunt. It could be a possibility that Hogan could take Varcoes spot on the bench as an extra player who can go down back to help cover the loss of Hunt.

Do you think this is a likely scenario? It makes sense to me, although I'm not sure how happy I am with Varcoe missing out.

Well he's misinterpreted the Ablett forward plan. According to the club, Ablett is to spend more time forward than on then bench, not necessarily less time in the midfield.

Hogan has been good, but he hasn't overtaken Varcoe yet.
 
I don't think there's a spot in our best 22 for him, will be pushed out of the side by Gamble I think/hope.

There was a point made from Buckley on Friday night that he will keep his spot for aslong as he is able to keep up his forward pressure in a Davey like role, which is a fair enough comment I suppose.

Too many are ahead of him though. I'd have him first drop if a small goes down. Put him on the ball in the 2s til then and keep his confidence high.

Right now with our depth, if I was Varcoe I would be playing every game like it were my last. Even if he isn't getting his hands on the pill when as he does quite frequently goes missing, he should be chasing and pressuring at every opprtunity. There are way too many times i've watched a game and not even noticed Varcoe out there and then he'll give someone a high 5 after they kick a goal and I'll think.. oh he is playing. Consistency is essential.
 
Despite running the top Fantasy Footy site 24/7 he's never been in the top 100 for Supercoach or Dreamteam. Seems a nice guy and the his website is fantastic but he's not really that knowlegable.

Varcoe is almost a certainty to start IMO.
