Match Reviews/Opinions

Jason McCartney during the U18 Championships....
vs Tasmania: I was extremely impressed with Troy. He kicked 3.4 and although he was a bit lazy on his kick, some of his lateral movement and agility was outstanding. There was a little bit of Daniel Motlop about the way he played. He's a good size at 188cm – I reckon he's a shade taller than that – but he plays tall, because of his spring. He also took a brilliant mark running back with the flight – plucking it with one hand – it was quite phenomenal. He is one to watch.

vs NSW/ACT: No relation to teammate Mitch, he wears the lime green boots and plays like someone who wears lime green boots. He has got some Daniel Motlop about him. He is brilliantly quick on the lead and can take some spectacular marks and kick some great goals. He's got the bells and whistles and it's exciting when it gets in his area. He has some great natural talent. He has kicked six goals from three games.

vs WA: He played full-forward, pushing up to centre half-forward, breaking even with Blayne Wilson, a good young player. His agility at ground level was quite amazing. There is something about him; he is a real draftable player. He has pure x-factor.
Matt Burgan....
Troy Taylor (NT Thunder, NT)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 12/09/91
Recruited from: South Alice Springs
After being strongly linked to Gold Coast, the exciting forward who is likened to Daniel Motlop, looks set to be claimed in the top 25, with the first-round certainly in the mix.
Draft range: 8-25
AFL Draft Info (http://www.afldraftinfo.com/2009/10/troy-taylor-nt-draft-profile.html)
Strengths

> Excellent-freakish hands, ball handling and control at ground level and aerially
> Very smart forward player that has very good sense of what’s happening, positioning and nous I50
> Good vision and decision making ability with the ball
> Good pace, evasive ability and leap – don’t think DC results did his ability in each justice (some were very poor)
> Good user over the short range by foot – weights his passes very well
> High level of hurt factor

Weaknesses

> Poor running capacity/work-rate and hence limited in terms of AFL positions ATM – only 3rd tall I50 suits him ATM - possibly HFF/wing may open up if he increases his work-rate - whilst his impact is high when he gets the ball his involvement in games is low – he doesn’t get much of the ball both because of his role and presently low work-rate (this will improve over time, especially after a preseason)

> Doesn’t seem to offer much defensively (I would question this, as his tackling pressure is quite good)

Other

> Extreme reach advantage for his height – arm length similar to very tall KPP/ruckman
> Skinny at present but should fill out into an OK build for his roles
> Has had run ins with law as a juvenile (robbery and assaults) including jail time – reports suggest he has turned the corner.

I'm calling the position of #1 fan....

Taylor is getting a bit of love in the phantom drafts at the moment, but I don't think people are being very accurate in their positioning of him. I see Taylor going to Port, Fremantle or North. These clubs travelled up to Alice Springs to talk to him, and helped convince his mum on a potential move. While Fremantle has apparently been the most active, and have a mentoring program set up for him and have done some work into getting around his parole conditions. So I think he will either go at 16 to Port, 20 to Fremantle or 21 to North.

Short term, he'll play as a medium sized forward and will more than likely stay inside the forward 50. But long term, I see no reason he can't push up to a wing and run through the midfield.

I hope the kid makes it, because he has far too much talent to not be playing AFL football.

Be intresting to see where he goes in the Draft. I doubt he would be a Top 20 pick but after that he will come into Calculations

agreed

and i reckon if he does sneak past all 3 i can definitely see wc taking him with 22 or 23:thumbsu:

I honestly don't see Taylor going to West Coast. I know it's a long bow to draw, but his mother was very hesitant about a move to Perth until Fremantle came and spoke with her. And it was the prospect of established role models and mentors for him which ultimately convinced the both of them. This isn't a shot at West Coast or anything, but they don't exactly have the strongest Indigenous set-up.

There's probably nothing to it, but as a Fremantle supporter I hope I'm right because I would hate to see him in an Eagles jumper....

Also, for whatever club does draft him, I wouldn't expect to see much of him next year. He returned to school for year 11 this year, and I can't imagine his parole officer or the Department of Justice would allow him to leave the NT and not complete year 12. I don't actually know the facts, but I think it would be negligent of them and the club if they didn't insist on him completing school.

If anyone hasn't already had a look, the AFL website has launced the 'Draft Machine'. There are highlight packages of around 200 possible draftees.

It's a bit hard to find certain players, but if you go to the Fremantle page then you will find Troy Taylor in the list of top draft picks. Click on his name and you'll be able to watch his video.

I really liked his video. There was more of a focus on his marking ability in the highlights package, which I must say looked a lot better than I remembered. It didn't show off all his skills, but what was there was good.

Not disagreeing with anything else, but we have Phil Narkle as our Indigenous Liason.

Funny, considering we only have one player with aborigine blood in him:o

Correct. We take the best available players, who are known ball winners. Fremantle on the other hand have a long list of gun indigenous players.

If you take him you will take him with your second pick, the only reason we would overlook him is either because we dont think he is the best available or because of his record.

Risky draft pick in my opinion would only take him with a late pick or rookie.
Will not have the work ethic to make it in the AFL and with his athleticism he should of at least performed better at the draft camp.

Looks flashy on the field but is the type of player who would take a speccy on the wing and then play on and kick a torpedo out on the full when other options where available.

Looks to have silky crisp skills in spades. The only negative I see is his lazy execution sometimes.

I dont know if he would go as high as 20 but could see his personal probs drop him back to the 30's or 40's.
