If you are fed up with windows and don't want to pay the hefty mac tax, have a look at the newly released Ubuntu 9.04.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

The distribution is fully open source and works very well. Check it out. Those that use Linux will be impressed with the enhancements and those who have never used Linux before will be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, I've been using Ubuntu on and off for a few years now (damn games keep bringing me back to XP) and it's a great OS. The package downloader makes everything so easy, definitely it's best feature. Haven't seen the latest build but if it improves on previous builds then it's going to be good :thumbsu:

I have also used Ubuntu and would gladly use it permanently except for one thing.....no logmein

I love the easy accessibility there is with logmein and there simply isn't any alternative yet and apparently won't be for a while :( It's a real shame as I would probably be using Ubuntu as main main second meez thinz if there was:o

BP, the EXT4 file system is quick. Boot times on both my PC and laptop are fast. Installing is quick. I installed it on my laptop and was connected to the internet via wireless (which previously needed the windows driver using NDIS wrapper) in 20 minutes.

You got me all excited there with that link Hawka until I read the thread from Trip Kucera ( sounds like a dodgy name :p) that it's still a little way off :(

Also i'm trying to find out if the new Ubuntu has drivers for wireless Atheros hardware.

With 8.04 and 8.10, I had to use NDIS wrapper and the windoze driver to make my laptop connect via wireless (Atheros). With 9.04, it detected and installed it without a hitch.

You could always try the desktop version as a live CD for a test spin. That way it doesn't install on your hard drive. Check your ISP's file repository for a copy.
