Why do umpires call players by name, even using their nick names sometimes. The umpires are not the players mates on the field and it invites accusation of bias and favouritism eg. calling the well known players by nick names and the new players mate or by their number. Every player should be adressed as 'player number 23' or 'blue player 16' to take away any possibility of favouritism. Also, the practice of commenting on the qulaity of play e.g "good mark Johnno. Your kick." These guys are meant to be professionals but that sort of behaviour undermines their credibility and makes them appear like ring-ins in a suburban league.

Your kidding aren't you, it makes absolutley no difference to the game, so why care.

Well, I guess that answers the question. If people can't see why it makes a difference we will never get much profesionalism into the practice of umpiring.

I see how sometimes it can be seen as bias.

When a player takes a mark and the umpire says "Good mark Johnno, nothing in the hit" is a bit far. It should be the same for every player, new or experienced.

First names are ok, but nicknames are a tad creepy and uncalled for I think.

it's all about communication - people like to be called by their names - it's no different for footballers. You find that the younger players get called by their names too, yes, some get called by their nicknames (johnno, buddy etc.), but the younger ones get called by their names too.

Good communication makes for a better umpire - and the players respond to you better that way.

Ok - so what happens if an umpire calls a player by a nickname and the player turns to him and says "only my mates call me that" ?

Keep professional - players are numbers, umpires are "sir"

so when a umpire gives a free kick i would rather the umpire 2 call me by my first name than the umpire 2 call out hey u its your kick

Exactly because if they didnt use names and were asking a player to say move back from the mark and he didnt and then that resulted in a 50 metre penalty you would have the same people complaing why dont the umpires use the players names.

Selggad - you would be surpirse to know that most umpires know all the players names even the young guys.

its an AFL directive that the umpires know all the players names ... and they infact get a bit of grief for refering to guys as Mate or Number 23 ... knowing players names makes it alot easy to communicate on field, and nicknames rather than first names more so as alot of guys react more to the nickname than their first name.

I agree that it's very unprofessional and lowers their credibility. When an umpire says something like, "holding, Chris's kick" when referring to Judd it acknowledges that he is paying attention to the players rather than the play.

Whether or not this actually true, this is what it conveys.

who cares in junior footy you wouldnt call a player by there name but in AFL everyone noes who they are it doesnt matter

I've actually been impressed by the knowledge of the umpires in this regard - but I still think it gives a bad impression, especially when talking to 'vossy' or 'hirdy' as they regularly do (or did).

As to moving the guy of the mark, if the umpire says "Carlton 44, move back a metre" that's prety clear. Also there could be two or more players by the same name in a passage of play, e.g. a holding the ball decision with a couple of Mark's or Ben's involved. Numbers are more clear and remove any perception of bias.

Also, if a player 'likes' being called by his name instead of his number he is not focussed on the game and his job. Umpires aren't there to develop relationships with the players; their job is to adjudicate and make decisions

I can't think of another professional sport where players names are used. When we are continually dealing with issues of professionalism and competence in the industry I would have thought the AFL would do everything they can to give the umpires an edge, and to me this is an obvious lack of professionalism.

Cricket: in Cricket we umpires use names for everyone (not just State stars - but younger guys too), we know everyone, they call us by our first names and the relationship between the lot is EXCELLENT,

Players prefer having the umpire know their names too as i've been told.

So they umpires feel like they are a part of the game.

They have no lives and cant play football so they try and be mates with the players.

Cant wait for the day of robot umpires.

What a load of cods that comment is.

Kirby, you've made two comments that have contributed nothing. Why bother? The demonstration that you can slag off other people comments and make no worthwhile contribution yourself makes you appear a fool - an adolescent fool at that. Go back to the school yard.

We're always told if you know the name, use them.

Personally I think it shows a lot more professionalism to learn the names of however many blokes there are in the league you're umpiring.

I'd not use nicknames though. We're told in our league specifically NOT to.

Plus, it takes the wind out of the sails of someone who's being argumentative with you when you call them by their first name. I've seen 16 year old female boundary umpires shut up 6'6" ruckmen by doing exactly that.

Sorry Selggad, while you're entitled to have your opinion, I'm going to disagree with you on this one.

I'd like to see you come up to Shepparton and state that opinion in front of a bloke called Mark "Chops" Lambourn. He played approximately 200 games for Shepp Swans, Shepparton and Katandra, and coached at least one premiership in that time. A known class player in the GV league and the Picola League. He's hung up the boots and taken up umpiring to give something back. In fact he just umpired his first game in the KDL 1st this week, and if he's half a good an umpire as he was a player, he'll be doing GV Finals in no time.

Yeah he cant play footy at all, right?

Blinks at the edit to my post.

I know I'm new around here, but it's ok for someone to say umpires have no lives and cant play football but it's not ok for me to use a 5 letter word starting with 'i'?

Anyway, Selggad.

If Umpires werent miked, you'd probably not even know they call guys by names. I'm pretty sure it's been going on for some time...

Still you make your point well.
