Just a question, Mal Micheal was called to play on in the first quarter but he stepped of the line for a rushed behind. Ray Camberlin grabbed the ball and threw it up. It was the first time i say this happen. Can he do that?

Even if the umpire calls play on, the player has to kick the ball..

Seen it happen before when a player gets called to play on so runs outside the goalsquare, same result.

It doesn't have to be a kick, it can be a handball as well.

The player has to bring the ball into play, that's the rationale behind it. If the player kicks or ahndballs, it is technically in play for that minute moment. If the ball is walked over the line, it was never in play.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it can be a handball. Isn't that why they always kick it to themselves if they want to play on.

Anyway, in this case, he should have kicked it thru' the goals.

I still dont get the reasoning behind having to kick the ball to yourself after the umpire has called play on. If it is play on, you should be able to just run off. Kicking it to yourself is playing on, so its like playing on twice.

Forget the reasoning - it's the rule! Like hands in the back - it's still the rule! Players should know - supporters should also know!!

I never argued that Mal did the right thing. I just think that having to kick to yourslf to play on after play on has been called is silly.

The umpiring in our games has been nothing short of atrocious. Glad I couldnt make it today and Schwarz put it perfectly when he said 'Put the whistle away and let them play!'

Could not believe that holding the ball decision against Monfries in the first half. Commentators got that right when they said it was the worst decision of the year.

what happens if they call playon after the kick in and for example mal gets tackled in the square and doesnt dispose of it.....is it holding the ball or a ball up becuase he hasnt kicked or handballed therefore the ball isnt in play and cant be called a free kick

I liked it when Franklin and Roughead hang out the back of the pack, 'pushed' the pack over, picked up the crumbs and goaled. Everyone saw it except for the umpires.

This hands in the back rule is very very bizarre.

The ball isn't in play. Mal is. If tackled fairly it would be a free.

Yea i think one thing we can all agree on is that the umpiring was disgraceful as a rule today about 5 of the holding the ball decisions i couldn't see for the life of me how they were payed either way. The hands in the back rule is a joke there were some obvious ones like the roughy one that dont get paid then i remember boyler nudging someone in the side yet getting pinged its all a mess this round in general was a shocker.

Agreed, agreed and agreed.

Although I'd like to replace "Bizarre" with "Shit". Umps were terrible today but wouldn't have changed the results as we were just as bad as the umpires.

Yeah, the same Schwarz who started complaining fove mintes later when they didn't pay a soft free kick. The commentary yesterday was as bad as the umpiring (and Essendon I'm sorry to say).
