Umpires need to try and NOT control the match, pick out obvious frees and let everything else go. Simple is better. Put the whistle away, and let the men play. They are driving me mad at the mo, a slight hand in the back - free kick. A hand brushes a face - free kick. A player falls over and someone falls over near him - in the back. It is doing my head in.

Ex players of any level should be becoming umpires, a la Paul Reiffel, I believe that would fix a few problems. A players perspective. Hmmm

PS The free-kick against McVeigh was there, he was getting tackled, he put the ball on the ground before trying to hit it away. The 50 wasn't though...

Just watched Knighta on BomberTV and he said similar things..he thought some of the tackling was crude early and that it was more a case of us not getting to the ball first.

In hindsight i'm starting to agree , but thats easy now after such a great win;)
 
phew ... I was thinking i was having a bad judgment day...

I wonder how and why that happens!

to me it seemed to change around a bit after Hilly served up a bit to one of the umpires after the velvet sledgy was getting Ruffed up on the ground !

I think he yelled Something like well start paying some then! at the Umpire

Like many have said im not usually one to pinpoint umpiring decisions and blame them for a loss. So its lucky we won otherwise I would be breaking a habit.

Fair enough we did seem to come out a little aggressive giving away a few silly free kicks in the first quarter, but the amount of shocking decisions going in norths favour was absolutely ludicrous. I was livid halfway through the second qtr. Whether it was bias or just poor inconsistent umpiring it was a terrible display.
 
i was at the game with a mate and the umpiring up until half time was appalling , even made me sick and i hate Essendon (no offense), however u think they balanced it out more after half time but only because use were getting to the ball first.
 
As a realist, I didn't think it was that bad. Some comments are being blowed way out of proportion. Just because the call doesn't favour your team that doesn't mean the call is wrong. You gotta remember that they're trying their best and if anything they would be doing alot better job than we'd be doing.

I think it was against us early. That's no to say that most of the frees wern't there, just that the inconsistency wasn't favoring us.

I think the umpires can have a big influence on the game (I thought North was hard done by in the finals last year--though they would have lost regardless), but I'm glad that the Dons showed enough quality to come out and put it behind them and make sure they were the ones getting the frees from then on.
 
I thought there'd be a thread about the umpires... maybe it'd be easier to just have the one thread that after every game we go and badmouth them for all the wrong decisions and inconsistencies instead of creating one every week.

Yes, the umpires were bad in the first half but it evened out as the match wore on, to our credit we didn't let the decisions affect us too much (a couple of outbursts and 50m penalties and that's about it)

I thought that the 50m against Slattery for kicking the goal after putting his hands in the NM player's back was plain unfair. How are you supposed to hear the umpires whistle with 50,000 fans screaming themselves hoarse?
We can only hope they start to settle down now that the nerves have gone after round 1.

Di d anyone notice that right at the end of the first quarter, one umpire signaled a free-kick to us for holding the man. Then another umpire played advantage to the kangas. Disfraceful umpiring AND bad communication between the to umpires

I agree with most of what you state, however, if you look closely at young Slattery's body language, there is a nuance of recognition that he is about to do the wrong thing. Very subtle, and was unlucky to get pinged for it.

One sided tally, but I was more frustrated with the sloppy way we apprroached the tackling in the first quarter- and they learned quickly after that. The Igknighter was quick to rectify the problem. Gee he's a breath of fresh air this coach. Why did we take so long ? I still shake my head.
